Lyr Req: Home again Kathleen 4th verse

From: Steve Parkes

I'm perfectly certain that when I used to sing "I'll take you home again Kathleen" there used to be four verses. I'm sure, because everyone used to start clapping at the end of the third chorus, and I had to struggle to get the rest out ... or maybe they were just trying to tell me something!

Well, I'd forgotten most of the words long since, but a friend sang it last week, to an original version of the words and tune (another one with a bad memory). I'm intending to teach him the correct words and tune, and I can only find three verses. That's the way everyone from Joseph Locke to Elvis has recorded it, maybe because taht's all you can get on a gramophone disc.

Anyone know that missing bit? The three known verses are in the DT, of anyone's interested.

Steve

I found it in two places on the Levy Sheet Music site, and neither had more then 3 verses...

I know - it's all over the web, but no extra verse!

Steve, do you think they started clapping to stop you singing the fourth verse? (My "audiences" just throw things!). Sorry can't help, I'm sure only 3 verses were used in our family sing-songs.

Steve - the sheet music at Levy were both prior to 1923 -- and neither had any alternate verses. One probably crept in somewhere in the version you are used to....

Thanks, guys.

Roger, of course I'd thought of that! I just didn't want to deprive some self-styled comic the opportunity of getting in a dig under the guise of a gag!

Any chance of tracking down your old audience? Or prior booking club? Surely, somewhere, someone has this. I've looked in all my books, and found six versions of 3 verses. Sorry.

That's a nice thought, Gypsy, but it's over twenty years since I used to sing 'Kathleen' in Walsall. Maybe I'll dig up 'The Gypsy's Warning' instead - it's even longer since I sang that!

[Blush!!] I write this with great embarassment ...

Lookng through my ancient sheet music at the weekend, and realised that the song-that-has-four-verses-but-everybody-only-ever-sings-three is, in fact, My Grandfather's Clock!

I'm very grateful to everyone who hunted for the phantom verse , thanks again.

Steve

P.S. I heard that, Roger!!

Boy, I'll tell ya, Steve, we really looked hard for you. I found five books that had the song, each with only three werses. Still, I appreciate your honesty -otherwise, I'd still be looking.

Yeah Steve, since you dug thru the ancient sheet music, surely you can share the mysterious FOURTH VERSE with us. Pretty please?

Okay, okay!! I think it's this one, secret verse two:

My grandfather said that of those he could hire,
Not a servant more faithful he found,
For it kept perfect time and had but one desire:
At the end of each week to be wound.
For it kept in its place, not a smile upon its face,
And its hands never hung by its side,
But it stopped short, never to go again,
When the old man died.

Words and music by Henry Clay Work, who was named for Henry Clay, whose father was Cassius Clay. Not a lot of people know that.

I've just checked the DT (you could have done that!), and it's all there; turns out to be verse three after all. I really must start practicing again!
