Not familiar with this version is it different to the (eg)Big Joe Turner version: "My baby rocks me/in a big feather bed/gonna boogie her woogie/ till my face goes cherry red/"?
His one is probably on one of the blues lyric sites like "Harry's" (see Mudcat links, haven't got the bookmark on this PC)

Hmm, just got this from Harry's site, not the version I remembered, maybe I was thinking of Champion Jack Dupree? Interestingly this version has a line from the earlier thread on the much-debated Kokomo blues!

Cherry Red
by Pete Johnson / Big Joe Turner
recording of 19 from Joe Turner's Blues (Pearl 1070), copyright notice

Run here pretty baby, set down on your daddy's knee
I want to tell ev'rybody, how you've been sending me
Now if that's your secret, you can keep it to yourself
'Cause if you tell me, I might tell somebody else

I ain't never loved and I hope I never will
Because a lovin' proposition, will get somebody killed
Lead me pretty baby, 'cause you know I can be led
Squeeze me pretty baby until my face turns cherry red

Sorry, didn't paste the last (crucial!) line:
Squeeze me pretty baby until my face turns cherry red

Hi,

Can't help you on the lyrics but haven't heard Groundhogs for over 25 years. When I first saw them they were loud. I didn't see 'em when I was at Reading U. but could still hear 'em from my hall of residence 10 min away. I remeber liking the album featuring Cherry Red, however.

I first saw Tony McPhee at the 1st Buxton Rock & Blues Festival circa 1970 with Juicy Lucy & East of Eden(anyone remember Jig-a-jig?),I've been in (too)many bands since and finally found the guys to play Cherry Red with, now all I need are the bloody lyrics!!!!HELP!!!

Is this(click) the one? Maybe not since it doesn't have your chorus, but maybe these are partial lyrics (?) If nothing else, this'll refresh it for you.

I got this quickly, but it's all I can hear.
If you're prepare to bluff the song live by making something up or singing nonsense in one section, there's enough to perform it.
Remember, the song has a bit that no-one can understand there! ;-)
Be true to the record! Play what YOU hear! It worked for me for 13 years! Very few people will EVER question you and if you get real lucky, someone who knows the proper words will take delight in correcting you, so problem of lyrics then 100% solved!. 8-D

All night long, I loved her
Morning came to soon,
I knew she'd be gone by the afternoon.
I said "Please don't go!"
Still she said goodbye
But as she turned around she had a glad look in her eye.
But as she turned around she had a glad look in her eye.
But as she turned around she had a glad look in her eye.

And I thought it said

When you *learn how to see me       alternative - yearn now ?
You turn right in your bed
The warmth of my body will heat you
Make your blood run cherry red,
Cherry red, cherry red.

All next day I waited for a time
But she didn't show
Until I turned to the dark of night
I said "Please come soon!"
Still there was no sign
But as the ????? to the lie
as the ????? to the lie, as the ????? to the lie.

????? SOUNDS like "dalek-tarmengrew "
I'd find words that sound like that, fit the rhythm and context and make at least partial sense. Then bluff! I'd perform it without any further hesitation, right or not.

Good luck!

For the record ... I have, packed away somewhere, a record with Big Joe Turner and pianist Pete Johnson (if I remember correctly), in which Turner sings as the last lines:

You can take me, baby,
And lay me 'cross your big, brass bed;
You can rock me, baby,
Till my face turns cherry red.

Try this:

All night long, I loved her
Morning came too soon,
I knew she'd be gone by the afternoon.
I said, "Please don't go!"
Still she said goodbye
But as she turned around she had a crafty look in her eye.
As she turned around she had a crafty look in her eye.
As she turned around she had a crafty look in her eye.

And I thought it said

When you look round to see me
You turn right in your bed
The warmth of my body will heat you
Make your blood run cherry red,
Cherry red
Cherry red.

All next day I waited for her return
But she didn't show
Until I turned to look on your night
I said, "Please come soon!"
Still there was no sign
But as the dawn returned that look round was just a lie.
As the dawn returned that look round was just a lie.
As the dawn returned that look round was just a lie.

Tony (T.S.) McPhee's still around & still gigging - I'm on his mailing list.

Try this: Tony McPhee / Groundhogs

Keep checking Freak Zone (BBC Radio 6?) for classic sessions; I caught one a year or so back featuring a twenty+ minute swathe of Earth Shanty & 3744 James Road (my two all time favourite 'Hogs numbers in near definitive renderings) from an early 70's In Concert.

If anyone wants to hear this, PM me & I'll put it up on YouSendIt for a week...

still she sai goodbye, but as she turned around she had a crafty look in her eye as she turned around she had a crafty look in her eye(x2).

chorus- and i thought she said, when the moon rise this evening and you turn around in your bed, the warmth of my body will heat you make your blood run cherry red(cherry red x3)

all next day i waited for her return still she didnt show
the daylight turned to the dark of night
i said please come soon still there was no sign,
*and as the dawn returned icud tell that look in her eye was just a lie *(x3)

and i thought it said (repeat chorusx3)

I know some of the verses sound long and out of sync ie * But that was the lyric as written on the american copy of the album i had, but that verse* i think is a bit of a cut up and when you listen to it it he misses out the "i cud tell" part but it was included on sheet and as otherwise you miss the gist, but i spent years as a kid trying to unravel the lyrics when i owned just a uk copy. if i ca help with any other of there stuff feel free to drop me a line and good luck.
