19 May 00 - 10:03 AM (#230489) Subject: New Member From: Jacky of Kent Hello one all! Decided to join you all at last. This is a really great site especially for one so new to folk music as I am. Message especially for Penny S. If you haven't already found it, the death of Anne Linnington and the story about the barn catching fire were reported in our local paper today. I can put this on the forum for you or mail to you personally if you want the wording. It said a memorial service will be at All Saints Church, Birchington on Monday 22nd May at 3pm. |

19 May 00 - 11:35 AM (#230532) Subject: RE: New Member From: Jacky of Kent Hi Bert, Sadly the sale of hops are in decline in Kent, and so the traditional influx of London families who used to travel down to Kent to pick the hops are disappearing too. Having said that, there are plenty of good pubs!! This area is also famous for Shellfish, particularly the Whitstable Oyster. Thanks for the warm welcome. |

19 May 00 - 01:14 PM (#230599) Subject: RE: New Member From: GeorgeH Welcome, Jacky . . Actually, the hops aren't as much in decline as they once were . . (Speaking as one who spent most of his early childhood summers in Whitstable, when steam trains used to run along the embankment above Seasalter Marshes). And Whitstable also ought to be famous for giving The Oyster Band their name, just to bring in a musical reference. Enjoy life and the Mudcat . . G. |

19 May 00 - 05:21 PM (#230736) Subject: RE: New Member From: Skipjack K8 Jacky, on second thoughts (well... actually read the thread through!) I come from the true home of the native oyster, the Blackwater in Essex (although those Colne types would disagree). I did three years in Canterbury in the 80's, and fell in with them rough Oyster Band fellas. Very happy years, drinking in the Jolly Sailor in Mrs Pope's reign (I'm told it's been gentrified now) and being paid to clear Doug's Chippie @ chucking out time, using only my guitar! We had a flat above Gateways, by the Kings School Shoppe in the Borough/Palace Street. Funny how life just gets less fun, innit? All the best Skipjack K8 |
