Andy Kershaw - No More?

Subject: Andy Kershaw - No More?
From: Roger in Sheffield

I have just read in the local paper that Andy Kershaws BBC Radio1 program finishes tonight after his contract was nor renewed. If any one has any information on this please let me know. I am very angry as this show introduced me to the great variety of music out there folk, country, dub, blues, world music were all in there. If andy is giving up of his own choice then I would like to thank him for introducing me to some great music and I will miss his show. If on the other hand his show is being axed then I need some BBC bosses email addresses to complain to.

Anyone help out there???

Quite frankly- I have given up on the BBC- talk about having lost the plot! Thank goodness Jools Holland is still around. Andy Kershaw has had a huge impact in widening the music scene in this country-it is unforgivable if his contract is allowed to finish.

It is True ! The BBC are going to drop Andy Kershaws Radio 1 program

Looks like the person to complain to is Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt:- andy.parfitt@bbc.co.uk

copies to controller of network radio Jenny Abramsky jenny.abramsky@bbc.co.uk

Alan Yentob alan.yentob@bbc.co.uk

I enjoyed his programme, but it was the only programme I listened to on radio 1, didn't fit in so well with the overall mix. There were rumours last year of the programme being axed. The time slot was changed so many times I lost track of when the show was on. I read that Andy K himself was very annoyed when they gave him a very late slot (starting midnight) and threatened to quit then.

I do know what you mean But where else can you find that kind of music? Is two hours a week too much to ask? Like most of the audience I had to tape it and listen the next day. How unusual the whole show was though from country to reggae to african then english folk I shall miss it but I wont miss the rest of Radio Ones dross Perhaps andy Parfitt is just trying to prove he does do something so that Greg Dyke doesn't dispose of him.

I listened to Andy Kershaw tonight on the BBC World Service (available at a Real Player near you). Check out their Website.

Old DJs never die, they only move to the WS.
Following in a long line of ex-Radio 1 personalities (DLT, Steve Wright, Terry Wogan [soon!!]etc.)

I very rarely listen to radio 1, I'm more of a radio 2 man myself, but I fear that soon radio 2 will turn into radio 1 playing hit's and having a commercially correct !! playlist.

I heard that Andy Kershaw's contract would indeed not be renewed but that he would be invited to submit various projects for consideration.

'When will they ever learn ?'

Over the years I loved and hated, in equal measures, Mssrs :Wogan,Peel,Campbell,Everett,Edmunds,Travis,Harris,Walker,Gamboncini and Bunty Bagshaw..et al..perhaps it's me that's changing. But I've never ever liked & hope I never will that prat Mo Dutta...

Ah, The Light Programme* hasn't been the same since Jack Jackson retired, thank goodness Humphrey Lyttleton (79 this week and still blowing)hasn't been axed yet and Melly does an occasional series. The boy Kershaw done good too, I'm sure one of the commercial channels will snap him up.
*I believe it is Radio 1/2 now?
RtS (who still thinks of it as "the wireless" and is probably setting himself up for a crack from Wazir Al-Hansell ( may his dates remain juicy).

I am mad as Hell Andy Parfitt replied to my email It looks like he thinks Folk and Roots music is not suitable for a younger audience. That makes me so angry. I like all types of music I like some tunes and songs from a variety of sources. Some Classical pieces, some pop tunes, bits of reggae etc. At the same time I hate some other pieces Have you heard the Brittany Spears song with the Titanic slop in it? Right now I am listening to andy Kershaws last show on minidisc and there is a wonderful uplifting african tune on. I dont see how anyone could not like it even A.Parfitt. I dont think my taste in music has ever changed that much and so I believe I would have liked the Andy Kershaw show as much when I was ten as I do now. So I would like that music to be available nationwide for anyone to listen to. Instead more Dance music is promised.

The problem with pop music today is it is all image. You dont have to play instruments or even sing well. Good Looks are all that seem to count and that is not a healthy message to give to children.

Yo there Alison et al.
Yes DLT was on a few weeks ago, but I just gone off and done a search for him at BBC World, and all I get are references to him in other programmes. Don't tell me an era has passed, and I've missed it!!!!!

This is a link to Andy on the D.Js page with a playlist of the last show.
Here is where you'll find the radio schedules, depending on what part of the world you live in, and
This is the sitemap, where, if you have more patience than me, you can go through it and find out who is hiding in the nether reaches of Broadcasting House these days.

Incidentally, somewhere in my travels I came across the remark that 'Andy Kershaw's World of Music' will return in a couple of weeks. So he may not have gone all that far neither.

Still doing the Ireland 'thing' this Aug?????
