Desert Island Discs

25 May 00 - 02:50 PM (#233819)
Subject: Desert Island Discs
From: Rana who SHOULD be working

Hi,

Little Neo's thread on a Deserted Island reminds me a bit of the BBC Radio programme "Desert Island Discs". I don't know if it is still on, or whether any stations on this side of the pond carried it (or had their own equivalent).

The premise was that you could take 7 discs (lp's in those days!) onto a desert island. You had the host + guest. The guest would talk about why they would take those discs and play a piece from each one. It was usually a interesting programme.

So any takers out there and why those 7!

Rana

I think you'll find it's 8 records, and yes, it's still running, though Roy Plumbley, who thought it up, died a few years ago. I'll have to think about that one! Hwyl, Bron.

And you get to take a book - not counting the Bible and Shakespeare which are automatically provided - and one luxury object, which can't be useful (eg not a tent or a hatchet etc).

There used to be an unlimited supply of needles, to go with the wind up gramophone, but these days the idea is you'd have a solar-powered record/CD player.

When you get to go on Desert Island discs it means you have really arrived. It's much higher prestige than a peerage.

Hey, I'll take the Shakespeare, but can I trade the Bible for "History of religions"?

OK, the book eh? "The Collected Writings of Quentin Crisp" (that way I know I'll stay sane)

1. Folkways anthology (all 4 volumes)

2. The Complete Beatles' recordings

3. The Folk-Legacy Catalogue (complete)

4. The Electra Folk Sampler (all 4 records)

5. Rachmaninoff's C#m played by Clifford Curzon

6. "78" of Lucretia Bori singing "Un Bel Dia" (the rest of "Butterfly" makes me ill)

7. Reader's Digest's "Clasical Music's Greatest Hits" (all twenty CDs) I know it's a tacky collection for folks who don't want to hear the "dull bits" but we ARE limited for space here, and obviously I can't do this at all without a lot of cheating.

8. The Caedmon collection of English and Scottish Traditional music (every damn volume)

Shit, this is too difficult, I'm gonna need a larger lifeboat!

"Woody", my 1950 Martin 0-18.

Rick (too greedy by half!)

Now hang on Chicky - I'll see you later at rehearsal and we can fight this out. "The Great City"? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!

I'll leave the bible and the Shakespeare if I can pack a few more other items:

Books: Iris Murdoch's "The Sea The Sea", William Trevor's Collected Stories, A complete collection of Brian Patten's poetry and WB Yeats' poetry.

Luxury items: My Finale program so I can keep composing on it (plus computer, speakers and a printer)

CDs:

1. Elvis Costello "King of America" (coz it's rilly good, and also coz if you refer to previous desert island thread, you'll notice that Elvis himself will be there anyway, and he can sing the songs live that aren't on King of America) 2. The Complete Beatles (coz I couldn't choose) 3. Van Morrison's "Hymns to the Silence" (because he has one of the best voices on the planet) 4. Walters and Warner "Pithead in the Fern" (coz they're great Australian songs) 5. Joni Mitchell "Court and Spark" (Just because) 6. Vince Jones "Live" (because he sings Leonard Cohen's "Allelujah" better than anyone - even better than Jeff Buckley) 7. Corwded House "Woodface" (just because).

7.

This is the sort of thing that has driven me to be the gibbering demented person I am (and the Pandora who started the "world's worst thread" according to Clinton!). I just can't narrow my choices down! The programme doesn't allow Collected Works for the books so I can't take E.F.Benson so it would have to be the Grossmiths' "Diary of a Nobody", but the records... !( the programme is 8 tracks, I could cheat by choosing LP/CD tracks to get the rest of the record) I could never narrow it down to 8 tracks. I tried thinking of tracks with 2 favourites playing together (Louis Armstrong & Sidney Bechet, Basie and Oscar Peterson etc) but I think I'll have to stay at home, if I can't take all my records I'm not going!
RtS ["Open the cage, Ma" (Arthur English), yes Bert, Effendi, another '50s reference!]

Lessee...

I'm not a Christian, nor involved in any organized religion, but I'd keep the Bible simply because it has so much reading for one book. The book might be Russell's History of Western Philosophy for the same reason - it would last me for years. Take a couple of years to understand any given chapter.

Luxury item. Easy call. A guitar. Probably an older Guild. I'd rather a Martin for playing, but a Guild would survive on a desert island a lot better. I've never run over a Guild with a truck, but I suspect you'd wreck the truck.

Recordings: I'm assuming you're limited to single albums, and the people who named "Complete Works of...." sets as one choice are cheating:

1) Ian Tyson, "Cowboyography"
2) Tom Russell, "Song of the West"
3) Finestkind, "Lost in a Song"
4) Stan Rogers, "From Fresh Water"
5) Stan Rogers, "Northwest Passage"
6) Tom Russell again, "The Long Way Around"
7) Norman Blake and Tony Rice, "2".

Four out of seven Canadian choices, and I'm not Canadian! Maybe I should emigrate...But they wouldn't let me take my .44 Mag, so I couldn't sleep soundly at night....

Peter.

Extra book: The Norton Anthology of English Literature (3rd Edition)

Luxury item: Sophia Loren

Seven discs:

1. Janet Baker, Songs
2. Wagner, the Ring Cycle (London recording)
3. Brahms Trios (Istomen-Stern-Rose)
4. Son House, the 1965 Recordings
5. Strauss, Der Rosenkavalier (Schwarzkopf et al)
6. Schubert: Lieder (Fischer-Dieskau, Die Schone Mulerin, Die Winterreise)
7. Complete Beatles somehow.

Hey, these turned out mostly classical. What do I do about Patsy Cline?

yours, Peter T.
P.S. This is not what I would play if I were on the radio programme!!!!The programme actually tends towards getting you to pick records that were influential for you, or marked good story points in your life. Some would be on it -- but others not. The above is for long term listening and learning.

Book: "Godël, Escher, Bach"... maybe that way I'd actually find time to work my way thru it.

Luxury item: why, this very computer, of course! Need to check the threads every day....

LPs & CDs & tapes..almost any one by Jean Redpath, The first Norman Blake album, a Ravi Shankar album to lull me to sleep at night(it really works!), The Ewan MacColl/A.L. Lloyd Child Ballad collection (if Rick can cheat, so can I), a tape I have (thanks, Art) of Craig Johnson, .....getting hard..maybe Jeanie Robertson, and..."Logan English sings the Woodie Guthrie Songbag"...an LP I foolishly loaned out 25 years ago and never got back...if anyone has a copy, and would make me a tape.....

now, pardon me while I go completely revise that list for the 147th time...

I haven't changed my mind about these I'll just have to lose Fresh Yesterday and Babbacombe Lee.

Book: The Dying Earth Stories, Jack Vance (the latest edition with all four books in one volume)
Luxury: Other than a permanent fast free internet connection (which sort of makes the whole thing pointless) there's no 20th century item I can think of that I need, so I settle for a really comfy chair.
(or chair for a comfy settle ?)

Cool, Julie, so am I! I'd love for them to put out an all-acoustic album. I've heard some of it from concert recordings--definately fits into a folk music genre! Will Killer Cars be on it? Will there be Maquiladora? Will there be the cover of Rhinestone Cowboy? Time will tell soon...BTW since I only did 7 albums, I'd say the 8th would HAVE to be OK Computer!

Well, for my books I would choose The Brewer dictionary of Phrase and fable, makes good reading and has all sorts of strange info.,br> The Bible. I have always intended giving it a thorough going over, and where else can you find tales of; love and hate, good and bad, happy and sad, sane and mad and the spiritual written in such a meaningful and yet intreaguingly obscure way.
I could even form my own religion, and if I get sick of the island I just might be Saved>
For my discs:
Bob Dylan bootleg series 1-3.
full of good stuff that the radio never got to play to death.
The Beatles White Album.
Their best and most experimental made while they were in decay, so from the soul.
The mask and the mirror,Loreena McKennett, just brilliant.
Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd,Their best and could be played loud to help the spotter plains, that God had sent to save me.
Robert Johnson complete, cause he had something I could listen to instead of all the copiests.
Christy Moore The collection vol 1.
In case I feel like a good laugh or cry.
Love to love you baby. Donna Summer,br> You did say I would be all alone, It could be played while I did a do-it-yourself, project,...or two.
Spider Tom, just hanging
