25 May 00 - 02:50 PM (#233819) Subject: Desert Island Discs From: Rana who SHOULD be working Hi, Little Neo's thread on a Deserted Island reminds me a bit of the BBC Radio programme "Desert Island Discs". I don't know if it is still on, or whether any stations on this side of the pond carried it (or had their own equivalent). The premise was that you could take 7 discs (lp's in those days!) onto a desert island. You had the host + guest. The guest would talk about why they would take those discs and play a piece from each one. It was usually a interesting programme. So any takers out there and why those 7! Rana |

There used to be an unlimited supply of needles, to go with the wind up gramophone, but these days the idea is you'd have a solar-powered record/CD player.
When you get to go on Desert Island discs it means you have really arrived. It's much higher prestige than a peerage. |

The Electra Folk Sampler (all 4 records) 5. Rachmaninoff's C#m played by Clifford Curzon 6. "78" of Lucretia Bori singing "Un Bel Dia" (the rest of "Butterfly" makes me ill) 7. Reader's Digest's "Clasical Music's Greatest Hits" (all twenty CDs) I know it's a tacky collection for folks who don't want to hear the "dull bits" but we ARE limited for space here, and obviously I can't do this at all without a lot of cheating. 8. Luxury items: My Finale program so I can keep composing on it (plus computer, speakers and a printer) CDs: 1. Elvis Costello "King of America" (coz it's rilly good, and also coz if you refer to previous desert island thread, you'll notice that Elvis himself will be there anyway, and he can sing the songs live that aren't on King of America) 2. The Complete Beatles (coz I couldn't choose) 3. Van Morrison's "Hymns to the Silence" (because he has one of the best voices on the planet) 4. Walters and Warner "Pithead in the Fern" (coz they're great Australian songs) 5. Joni Mitchell "Court and Spark" (Just because) 6. I just can't narrow my choices down! The programme doesn't allow Collected Works for the books so I can't take E.F.Benson so it would have to be the Grossmiths' "Diary of a Nobody", but the records... !( the programme is 8 tracks, I could cheat by choosing LP/CD tracks to get the rest of the record) I could never narrow it down to 8 tracks. I tried thinking of tracks with 2 favourites playing together (Louis Armstrong & Sidney Bechet, Basie and Oscar Peterson etc) but I think I'll have to stay at home, if I can't take all my records I'm not going! I'm not a Christian, nor involved in any organized religion, but I'd keep the Bible simply because it has so much reading for one book. The book might be Russell's History of Western Philosophy for the same reason - it would last me for years. Take a couple of years to understand any given chapter. Luxury item. Easy call. A guitar. Probably an older Guild. I'd rather a Martin for playing, but a Guild would survive on a desert island a lot better. I've never run over a Guild with a truck, but I suspect you'd wreck the truck. Recordings: I'm assuming you're limited to single albums, and the people who named "Complete Works of...." sets as one choice are cheating:
1) Ian Tyson, "Cowboyography" Four out of seven Canadian choices, and I'm not Canadian! Maybe I should emigrate...But they wouldn't let me take my .44 Mag, so I couldn't sleep soundly at night.... Peter. |
