The Dead never really explored the possibilites of the banjo in there music-who knows why? One would think they would have with such a blugreass influence behind them. Maybe the fast and prearranged licks used by banjoist would not allow for a sybiotic or mutual relationship with their jams. As jeffp stated, jerry was an impressive banjoist (old&in the way). I recently bought the recording "Pick'in on the dead", a blugrass tribute to the Dead. David West pick's such songs as athea, alligator, bird song, darkstar, casey jones, tennessee jed, ect... Iwas hoping someone might know aweb site, where someone had transcribed Dead guitar tabs to banjo tabs. polarbear |

26 May 00 - 03:40 PM (#234455) Subject: RE: need help to find gratefuldead banjo tab From: BlueJay Polarbear- While I don't know of any Dead banjo tab sites, keep in mind that the Grateful dead played many traditional songs, as well as songs from the popular genre by folks such as Hank Williams, Marty Robbins and Elmore James. I have seen exhaustive indexes of Dead songs, so maybe some searching through banjo tab sites could locate banjo tabs for some of these in an indirect way. (I don't know, as I've never searched any banjo sites). And don't forget Old and in the Way, which you mentioned. Maybe there's a tab site for it. This was Jerry Garcia's banjo playing at it's finest, and I don't think any banjo player could go wrong by learning ANY of these great tunes. Lots ofDead songs could work on the banjo, (A double-time version of "Morning Dew" comes to mind). But I just can't hear in my head a banjo version of "Truckin'" or "Sugar Magnolia". You may have to figure most of the Dead stuff out using guitar chords which are probably available. Best of luck, sounds like a website waiting to happen. BlueJay |

I've worked up a number of well-known Dead tunes for Scruggs style banjo on my web site: http://www.banjotom2.com It is true that there isn't much use of the banjo in Dead tunes themselves, but Jerry played the banjo separately with "Old And In The Way" and has gotten a lot of recognition in the banjo playing world for having done so. In teaching the banjo, I've had a number of younger folks come in for lessons and request Grateful Dead tunes for the banjo! At first I didn't think it could be done....and for sure not done well...but I didn't know a lot about the Dead at the time, alhtough I had been a fan in high school. So, I started buying their albums on CDs, "Reckoning" turned out to be the one that really turned my head. I listened to that album almost endlessly and made other compilation albums from it for several years. Now, I have a collection of Grateful Dead tunes arranged for the 5-string bluegrass-style banjo. So...at your leisure...visit my web site....It's easier to see the tunes available via the site map....and the Dead tunes are not 'grouped' together....so you'll have to hunt.
