Heard this song on a Paco Jiminez (?) tape while driving in a friends car. Does anyone know the lyrics?

TIA

I have two slightly different versions of Free Mexican Airforce. The first was recorded live at the Kerrville Folk Festival (Peter Rowan singing). The second is from a Peter Rowan album. He wrote the song, so I guess he can change it every time he sings it if he wants to. I will type them in the next few days and send them along.

From: Ferrara

Here are the words as I copied them from a Peter Rowan album. Haven't had time to type the other version but it isn't terribly different.

VERSION 1. FROM DAVID ROWAN'S ALBUM

1. In the Morenos Mountains campesinos are planting their fields
While the ghost of Zapata rides a horse that can still outrun the wind
While free in the sky high above, nearly clear out of sight
It's the Free Mexican Air Force flyin' tonight.
In the City of Angels a cowboy is cooling his heels
Remembering that God gave us herbs and the fruits of the fields
But a criminal law that makes outlaws of those seeking light
Made the Free Mexican Air Force, Mescalito riding his white horse --
Yeah the Free Mexican Air Force is flyin' tonight!
(After every verse:) Flying so high - yi - hiyeeeee! ...

2. How strange that an innocent herb causes money to burn
They'll jail you or kill you for making those rich fat cats squirm.
They're the fools who make rules with no difference between wrong and right
That's why the Free Mexican Air Force is flyin' tonight.
Uncle Sam in his misery put a Nix on the fields of (Herreros, Guerreros?)
Sayin' shoot down all gringos and wetbacks who dare wear sombreros
Either run for your life, surrender, or stand up and fight --
Or join the Free Mexican Air Force, Mescalito riding his white horse,
Yeah the Free Mexican Air Force is flying tonight!

3. It is not marijuana destroying the minds of the young
But confusion continued for power and greed in all forms
Well, the borders of evil will fall to the smugglers of light
We're the Free Mexican Air Force and we're flyin' tonight!
In San Antonio they tell me that power and money are one
They can buy us or sell you to keep you afraid, on the run
But no one can stop us! My vision is clearly in sight
And the Free Mexican Air Force, Mescalito riding his white horse,
Yeah the Free Mexican Air Force is flyin' tonight

4. Some were smoking (falitas, Colitas?) while other were loading their guns
Blowing smoke from their six-shooters, spinning their barrels for fun
Contrabandistas, banditos alike --
We're the Free Mexican Air Force and we're flyin' tonight.
High in the hills we are harvesting sweet sensemilla (?)
Yeah the law wants it all 'cause they know that the wild weed can free ya
And freedom for us is a prison for the rulers of might
That's why the Free Mexican Air Force -- Mescalito riding his white horse --
Yeah, the Free Texican Air Force is flyin' tonight
Flyin' so high- yi- yee...Flyin' tonight!

Legalize it.

I think Flaco's version of "Plane crash over county" is the best I have ever heard. You know the one I mean - Original by some famous American Folkie or another.... Otherwise known as "Deportees"

I am glad it was just a song as well. I was begining to wonder if it was a special offer in Tesco's - you know the sort of thing

"Free Mexican Airforce with every 3 boxes of Old El Paso burritos...."

Lonesome EJ, I disagree wholeheartedly with you on marijuana never ruining anybody's life. I am the one who posted as Guest on June 28th. Marijuana may not destroy your brain but it does destroy your initiative and ambition. Too many people who could otherwise be creative, productive members of society waste their lives away on menial jobs because all they ever wanted to do as a teenager was "get stoned." In addition, this song is not just about marijuana - "Mescalito riding his white horse" is about mescaline (a psychedelic) and heroin, as I interpret it. Show me a body of evidence where recreational drug use (legal or otherwise) has actually improved people's lives over the long term and I may change my mind.

...but it's just a SONG! We cannot be so politically correct that are not allowed to 'paint a word picture' of a culture and lifestyle that is interesting. It simply is NOT the same thing to use drugs as it is to write a song.

I doubt VERY much that hearing that song is going to be a deciding factor about choosing to use drugs....nor would hiding/banning the song save anyone....

My mind boggles at the number of rousing drinking songs that would have to be tossed if we start analyzing data on alcholism,,,,,,

I played the song at least once weekly on my radio show for several years, This exposure did not make me want to get high. I just liked the song, the lyrics are funny, Flaco and Peter sound great together. At The Evergreen State College in Olympia, where I was located, there were many listeners who were easily offended, and never hesitated to call me while I was on the air and let me know. Nobody ever called me to complain about that song.

Jon,anyone who became a pot-smoking ne'er-do-well had a pre-existing tendency to become a ne'er-do-well.Although the analogies to casual drinking have been overdone,my guess is that liquor poses a more significant threat to the user's physical and mental health than pot does, and even more of a threat to the abuser's family and friends.Marijuana is easily obtainable, widely used, and it's time we stopped legislating people's behavior regarding this intoxicant.Heck, let's tax its sale and use the funds for drug education in the schools,so that kids will understand that there is indeed a significant difference between marijuana and heroin, and that abuse of any intoxicant is detrimental, while the abuse of some substances can be fatal.

Bill D...I disagree that it's just a song. Although I don't think listening to it is going to ruin anyone's life, and I think its a fascinating song, it much more than just a funny little weird song when you look at some of the verses:

"It is not marijuana destroying the minds of the young
But confusion continued for power and greed in all forms
Well, the borders of evil will fall to the smugglers of light"
and also:

"Yeah the law wants it all 'cause they know that the wild weed can free ya
And freedom for us is a prison for the rulers of might"

Some serious crusading going on there if you ask me...and if you've ever seen Peter Rowan play live, or tried to hold a converstion with him you'll know in an instant that he really practices what he preaches--The man is out to lunch, totally spaced out, way from some other planet and/or eight miles high. He's kind of amazing though. The last time I saw him live, he was so gone before the show I wondered if he would be able to play-had the glassiest look in his eyes and his conversation was very strange and disjonted--but once he got onstage he was brilliant!

LEJ...I agree with your post 100% and I don't think the alcohol/pot analogy is overused at all. I lived with an alcoholic and I would much rather we legalized marijauna! Even though I don't partake of either on a regular basis I think alcohol is much more of a social problem...more addictive and more likely to exascerbate violent tendancies.

Oh and Seth...I agree with you as well, Flaco and Peter do sound great together... I love this version of the song!

Boy, I hate tripping over my own hypocrisy. Bill D, you have made me take another look at myself. While I neither drink nor toke, and consider each substance equally bad, I don't mind singing or hearing drinking songs but I do mind hearing and would never sing a song celebrating the wild weed. Right now I can't figure out why that is. I suppose that it's because alcohol is an old devil that we (as a whole society) are comfortable with, and marijuana along with all the other "illicit" drugs is a new devil that we still find alarming, lo these many years since 1967. Personally, I wish we could get rid of both devils.

Peter Rowan is a great singer, and a great guitar player, with a resume that extends back to Bill Monroe... but in my opinion, the pot-oriented stuff is his weakest material, and the pandering to the Deadhead contingent at his concerts with "Free Mexican Airforce" and junk like "Midnight Moonlight" is where a great artist trivializes his own performance.

I have nothing against dope; used to love it, in fact. But dope-material and fusion crap like "reggae-grass" make Rowan somewhat of a clown.

Listen to him sing "Midnight On The Stormy Deep" on the album he recorded with Don Edwards (High Lonesome Cowboy) to hear what he can do.

I fairness to the Grateful Dead, they did songs that worked for people who were on drugs, not drug songs. The fact that the GD's repertoire was almost completely free from overtly political songs, as well as ones endorsing drug use, is part of what makes their music timeless. Remember, Casey Jones ("riding that train, high on cocaine") is definitely an anti-drug song if there ever was one.

As far as Peter Rowan goes, the pro-pot image is something you have to live with. Don't listen to him if it bothers you. He wrote "Panama Red" and many other songs which appear on Seatrain, Muleskinner, Old and In the Way and The New Riders of the Purple Sage records. All groups with a "stoner" image. That is part of what Peter Rowan is about.

"High Lonesome Cowboy" with Don Edwards, Tony Rice and Norman Blake is still a "must have" CD in my opinion.

I have to agree with Ranks and Mbo: having been fortunate enough to see him the once and having heard his recorded music both under his own name and the work he's done with people such as Bill Kirchen and Dwight Yoakham, I think Flaco Jimenez is magnificent.

Passionate, uplifting and technically brilliant (probably in that order of importance!).

"'Midnight Moonlight' is pot-oriented junk pandering to the Deadhead contingent?"

Nope, Steve-o, I just said the song is junk; it's not that good a song, and that, yes, Rowan panders. He knows his fan base, and wants to make a living, no harm in that. And I have no problem with The Dead, or pro-pot stances. That's not the point.

The aging "stoner" image thing is just not impressive to me; Rowan's singing and playing are. But in my opinion, he trivializes his talents. His shows go downhill when he gets the Skandifarians whooping to "Panama Red" and "Free Mexican Airforce" and (shudder) "reggaegrass".

Believe it or not, I'm a fan. I can live with "what he's about"... My point was that this stuff is his weakest material.

I did not mean to sound argumentative as we probably agree here. I felt a need to place a slight objection to the Deadhead statement since many Grateful Dead fans were always clean, straight and sober. It was always about the music. Jerry took his work seriously. Rowan does not at times (seemingly) which may be part of your point.

Rowan's "Walls Of Time" was good enough in 1965 to make Bill Monroe's repertoire. "Land Of The Navajo" is a solid masterpiece. One of my personal favorites of all time. Especially the Muleskinner version. The album "...And The Red Hot Pickers" is worth having just for Statman, Greene and Keith, although I have not yet replaced the LP with the CD version. "Bluegrass Boy" is an amazing statement as he wrote all 12 songs - none about drugs!

Drug references in Commander Cody also keeps people from listening to a group that was both retro and ahead of their time. I wish "Down To Stems And Seeds Again Blues" was not on the "Live From Deep In The Heart Of Texas" record because I can't loan it to some of my newer friends. It's actually a parody of sad Country Music, not really pro-pot. The lead singing on that song is Bill Kirchen - probably the greatest Telecaster-slinger now working. And he works with Flaco...

But then people add bizarre statements that blow their ideas out of the water, like "Muleskinner, Old and In the Way and The New Riders of the Purple Sage.... All groups with a 'stoner' image". Oh yeah, all them Bluegrassers like Clarence White, Bill Keith, Vassar Clements, etc. really come off as a bunch of potheads. Give me a break.

Steve-o,

What I said was correct. The group "Old And In The Way" was regarded as " a buch of hippies playing Bluegrass" with Vassar Clements as a guest star. I feel it in not right to speculate on "who does what" while people are still alive, but Clarence White and the rest of the Byrds were stoners. Even Chris Hillman, who is now a devout Christian and a fine family man. Vassar Clements was not able to work during part of the 1960s due to alcohol abuse. I believe he, as Willy Nelson, found pot was better for his personal needs, at least for a while. I do not like drug songs anymore. Part of growing up.

There's just something tiresome and diminishing about Rowan's broadcasting his love of pot, and using it as a bonding ritual with his listeners. It's a low denominator of creative expression, and the kind of referent that becomes not about the music, but about itself. Which becomes boring, if you aren't still working out your cultural identity as a stoner.

Check out his bleary meanderings in front of the camera in the bluegrass documentary "High Lonesome" to watch dope point back to dope. It's not that Pete doesn't have a lot of stuff worth hearing - he's just to high to make any sense. I guess to some folks that comes across as subversive in some positive way. To me it looks dysfunctional, like Hank III's need to make his career be about substance abuse.

And the specific drug isn't the issue, Steve-o. I'd feel the same if he was addressing a roomful of Parrotheads about the righteousness of margaritas. It's frat-house kid-stuff, and Pete could retire it from his act with no loss of regard from the folks who came to hear him sing and pick.

Now we all know alcohol is a drug and ruined many a good man. But to derive such meaningless drivel from a classic song is quite an excersize in stupidity. You work for the government I'll wager. And mescal is an alcoholic beverage made from the agave plant. Mescaline is a derivitive. Now we all know alcohol is a drug and ruined many a good man. But to derive such meaningless drivel from a classic song is quite an excersize in stupidity. Please read some science for a change and stop this B.S. once and for all. As for truth, there is a report from a study in 2002 that suggested there was a cognitive deficit in pot smokers that the ONDCP jumped on with vigor. However, JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Assc.) has discounted as bad science. Read the truth and educate yourself about the miracle herb-Marijuana. Many studies report quite the opposite effect on pot smoker's. The much maligned herb actually provides some health benefits to altzheimer's and parkinsonian patients in early study results. The stigma attatched to pot is continually re-inforced by ignorant people who never will get it because they lack the capacity for open minded and logical thought. Perhaps cognitive deficits are begining to show themselves in folks who do not partake and should.
I am always motivated and will continually expand my horizons while getting stoned and attempting to educate anti herbal dolts.

Hi - Never heard of this song until I bought "The Best of Flaco Jimenez" by Arhoolie Records.

The accordion playing is fantastic, but I bought the album for that reason, in the first place.

Drugs and drinking songs have been around for centuries. I don't smoke anything and a six pack of a microbrew lasts me for2 months, yet I enjoy the music, the innuendoes in the lyrics and the spirit of the piece.

Being a musician (Pianola roll aranger/publisher) who's pushing 70, I can name many songs of the 'Teens through the 'Thirties with sex, drugs and/or alcohol references, yet I enjoy them for what they are.

Just an old man's opinion.

I'm in Doug's corner on this one. If you want to start picking over lyrics and moralities, there would be no songs left to sing, and no one left to sing em. Bill Monroe had a lot of violence in him, Jimmy Martin was into pornography, Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice were into cocaine for more than a while, and people cast stones at Peter Rowan? Innaresting...well, we can find things to dislike in just about anything if you look long enough. Many of these statements are getting into stereotypes, and I don't buy any of that stuff.

Keep an open mind, and reserve your judgements for own kids...

I believe David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, John Kahn(?), and P Rowan could pretty much deliver the music, as certainly could Mr Clements. If they all had buzzcuts and cowboy hats the bluegrass establishment would've wet themselves praising them.

Gosh, there are some posts here from some pretty uptight people. Come on folks, relax, it's a fun song with a great accordian accompanying Peter and it makes me smile. Growing up I heard how the "demon weed" would lead to harder drugs, but I never heard that a friggin song would be the entry point to smokin a fatty. I'm 55, started smoking dope in Vietnam and quit when it was time. Music has always taken me back to times in my life that were happy, this song is no different. Just a couple of the ? in the lyrics cleared up:

Guerrero - one of the southern Pacific states of Mexico.

colita - the word is a diminuitive of 'cola' meaning tail, ie, little tail, referring to the bud of seeds found on the mature female plant.

sin semilla: sin = without, semilla = seed, ie without seed, referring to female plants that have been allowed to grow to the point of flowering and then being harvested before becoming pollenated and going to seed thereby gaining greater THC potency.

Is it not amazing that someone would take the time to write how much they don't like Peter Rowan or his pot-influence? Dude, if you no like: Go away. Peter is a fabulous musician and songwriter, and I agree with Willie-O, if they wore traditional bluegrass outfits, they would have been the biggest thing ever in that culture. The depth and talent of Peter Rowan allows him to write songs that are about more than losing your woman and death. Although, he's wrote those too. If you cannot appreciate this diversity, then that says volumes about your musical tastes. Pete could sing about NEARLY anything and I would at least give it a listen once. And try to remember, a song is a story, not an auto-biography.

I listened to two recordings: one on the Rowan Brothers album "Crazy People" (2005) and one by Peter Rowan on the various-artists album "They All Played for Us: Arhoolie Records 50th Anniversary Celebration" (2012). Although recorded at different times, the lyrics are very consistent. Here's what I hear, and I have boldfaced the words that are different from the above transcription. I have also italicized Spanish words and provided a translation in brackets. Note that the 2 middle verses above are omitted from these recordings:

FREE MEXICAN AIRFORCE
Peter H Rowan

1. In the Morenos* Mountains, campesinos are plantin' their fields [peasants]
Where the ghost of Zapata rides a horse that can still outrun the wheel.
High in the sky above, and clear out of sight,
It's the Free Mexican Air Force flyin' tonight.
In the little town of San Antonio**, a cowgirl is cooling her heels,
Rememberin' that God gave us herbs and the fruits of the fields,
But a criminal law that makes outlaws of those seeking light
Makes the Free Mexican Air Force, Mescalito riding his white horse, [peyote cactus personified]
The Free Mexican Air Force is flyin' tonight!
Flying so high-yi-yeeeee-ee-ee-ya-ha-ee!

2. While we're smoking colitas, federales are loading their guns, [cannabis buds, federal police]
Blowin' smoke from their six-shooters, spinning their barrels*** for fun.
Contrabandistas, banditos of light, [smugglers, bandits]
We're the Free Mexican Air Force and we're flying tonight.
High in the hills, we are harvesting sweet sinsemilla. [high-potency marijuana]
The law wants it all 'cause they think that the wild weed can free ya.
Freedom for us is a prison for the rulers of might,
And the Free Mexican Air Force, Mescalito riding his white horse,
The Free Mexican Air Force is flyin' tonight,
Flyin' so high-yi-yeeeee-ee-ee-ya-ha!--Flyin' tonight!

[* I can't find any mountains called the Morenos Mountains. But if you Google them, you find lots of copies of these lyrics!
** I think the Rowan Brothers may have changed the town in the song to whatever town they were performing in.

Free Mexican Air force....

A slang expression from California surfing ... refers to a large flock of in-flight pelicans flying in formation along the coast.

It is a joke ! ! !

Rowen knew it.

Lots of stuff said...spelling could be better if one wants to come off as intelligent, not 'ingnorant'... try to think of 100 songs that you like & see how many relate to adultery, murder, abandonment, drinking, cheating, lying, smoking 'tobacco', or any drug, death, sex outside of marriage, etc. &
you will find a glamorization of any or all of the above. peter rowan just makes it fun. chill out dude!
