One version: "If I were a carpenter, and you were a lady" - this line is D,C,G,D as is each one of the rest of the verse lines, "Would you marry me anyway, would you have my baby?" (D,C,G,D). When you get to "Save my love for loneliness, Save my love for sorrow," those are D,C (first phrase), D, C (Second), and the last line: "I've given you my onliness, come give me your tomorrw" goes back to D,C,G,D. It is obvious where the changes are when you play. yours, Peter T. |

11 Jan 22 - 06:57 PM (#4132021) Subject: Lyr Add: IF I WERE A CARPENTER (Tim Hardin) From: GUEST Tim Hardin - The Homecoming Concert Recorded live on January 17th, 1980 If I were a carpenter and you were a lady Would you marry me anyway, would you have my baby? If a tinker were my trade, would you still find me Carrying the pots I made, following behind me? If I work my hands in wood would you still love me? If you answer quickly Tim I could, I’ll put you above me Save my love for loneliness, save my love for sorrow I’ve given you my ownliness, give me your tomorrow If I were much poorer than you seem to see me How could I be surer you could really love me? If I were a carpenter and you were a lady Would you marry me anyway, would you have my baby? If I were a miller at a mill wheel grinding Would you miss your coloured blouse, your soft shoes shining? Save my love for loneliness, save my love for sorrow I have given you my ownliness, give me your tomorrow I have given you my ownliness, give me your tomorrow Other recordings and concerts have different words. |
