Johnny Silvo?

One of the CDs most often on my system at the moment is the 1999 Blues in the Backyard by Johhny Silvo and Diz Disley. I bought it when I spotted it in a record shop, largely because I've admired Diz's jazz guitar playing since the (you guesssed it) 1950s and because I had vague memories of Johnny Silvo in a duo with bassist Dave Moses on radio and tv in the '60s. (There's another bassist on this CD.)
My question to UK 'Catters is merely curiosity about Johnny Silvo. I love his voice, what has he been doing & why hasn't he been heard of or recorded as much as his contemporaries? Am I right in thinking he's West Country based?
I can't see any other recordings by him on the usual large record store sites.
RtS (apologies if this is too biased, inflammatory or non-intellectual, my ignorance of things folkie is taken for granted)

I once went to Poynton to here Johnny Silvo, can't remember too much though except that it was a great night and he was a good singer and guitar player.

I have tried searching Google but no found any good (ie one with much detail about him) links to give you but it may be worth you doing a similar search and looking at some of the snippets. I know nothing about his past but at appears he has worked with Alex Campbell and Sandy Denny.

Sorry I can't turn up more.

Jon

He resides abroad, Scandanavia, I think. He used to appear on the late lamented Folk on Two from time to time. I'm sure I've seen his name as appearing in a concert or festival this year. Dr John

Dr John and all...

Took a quick spin around the web and found Skagen Fest, where he's on the bill... I'll try and see if I can dig up more, but most of what I find is only in relation to Sandy Denny.

This appears to be someone's personal fan page for him. Can't find anything else for sale besides "Blues in the Backyard" though... good luck. Hope I've been of help.

Hi Roger,

Johnny Silvo stayed with me last week as part of his Scottish tour. He is quite happily ensconsed in Norway where he has been for the last 13 years. He's now a very sprightly 65 and sounding (and looking) better than ever!!!

He has just completed a 10 day tour of Scotland, he is due back in the UK in September/October for a tour of the South of England.

He can be contacted at,

Kjelsbertguntnet 3, 4050 Sola, Norway.

Hope this helps!

Lorna Lavelle

He can also be heard on Allan Taylor's two CD compilation 'Alex Campbell Memorial Tribute', which is, I think, a recording of a memorial concert at Skagen Festival, on which the late Hamish Imlach can also be heard. I believe it is available (if at all) through

The Living Tradition

As Lorna mentioned above, Johnny Silvo now lives in Sola,Stavanger which is in the south west of Norway.
Spoke to his wife,Berit,a week ago she said he was on a short tour in Scotland and would be playing in FLØRA at the EMERALD ISLE FESTIVAL in the middle of June.

Met Johnny last weekend in FLØRA (west Norway).
He was playing in a pub for the duration of the Irish Festival.
He invited me to join him,and we had a couple of hours of great music.
He was really in great form and the public loved it.
I'm really looking forward to SKAGEN FESTIVAL at the end of the month.

Greetings John.

You will find that both Johnny Silvo and Diz Disley are appearing together at Saltburn Folk Festival this year. I'm really looking forward to it because it's a while since I saw either of them. It runs from 11th - 13th August.

Contact John Taylor on 01947 840928 for more details.

Also on the festival line up are Vin Garbutt, The John Wright Band, Roy Bailey, Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies and a whole load of other well known names

The'Alex Campbell Memorial Tribute' CD, which is mentioned earlier in the link is well worth buying--in my opinion.

I first met Johnny when he appeared as a guest at the club my father Stan & I were running at Amberley in West Sussex. It was in the late 60s and to this day I've never seen an artist galvanise an audience so quickly. Since that time he guested on numerous occasions during the club's 10 year run, he and my old man becoming great mates. Then finally, he 'took over' the club on its last night with Dave Moses and Diz Dizley. After that I lost touch with him until a few years ago when quite by chance I happened to be in a pub on a Sunday morning in the middle of nowhere..never knew the place existed until that day. Took me a while to place that voice but I got there - he was over from Norway on one of his two yearly visits. Had a great time catching up. I was over at Arundel's Willows Club on Wednesday when I heard that Johnny wasn't well, so I just want to wish him a quick recovery and hope he's back on the circuit as soon as possible.

We've put Johnny up a couple of times when he's appeared at Deal Folk Club. He was always the picture of health and energy and always managed to put away a full-house English breakfast before setting out for his next gig. Sorry to hear that he's been laid low but I'm sure he'll bounce back.
