Thanks.

The title is usually given as 'Round Midnight. Recorded by many, I remember vocals by Julie London and Linda Ronstadt. I think Monk's was done with Jerry Mulligan. Miles Davis did it too - they were instrumentals of course....Tiger

Well, I was going to be a nice guy and post the non-folk lyrics, but I hit a glitsch - my Hal Leonard Jazz Fake Book says the words are by Bernie Hanighen, and the music by Cootie Williams and Thelonious Monk, copyrighted 1944. then come the words: E-flat m, E-flat m/D, E-flat m/D-flat. Foiled!!!!! Can anybody come up with lyrics? -Joe Offer- (why doesn't the "enter" key give me a line feed on this any more????)

ROUND MIDNIGHT
Bernard D Hanighen, Thelonious Monk, Cootie Williams

It begins to tell 'round midnight, 'round midnight.
I do pretty well till after sundown.
Suppertime, I'm feelin' sad,
But it really gets bad 'round midnight.

Mem'ries always start 'round midnight, 'round midnight.
Haven't got the heart to stand those mem'ries
When my heart is still with you
And old midnight knows it too.

When some quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending?
Darling, I need you. Lately I find
You're out of my arms and I'm out of my mind.

Let our love take wing some midnight, 'round midnight.
Let the angels sing for your returning.
Let our love be safe and sound
When old midnight comes around.

[Sung by Ella Fitzgerald, Eydie Gorme, Julie London, Carmen McRae, Linda Ronstadt, Sarah Vaughan, and many others.]

One of my all time favorites as an instrumental by so very many jazz musicians---especially Monk's own piano recording.

I guess it was only natural that it would acquire lyrics. This is possibly the most evocative jazz tune ever.

Someone's even done it on an anglo concertina. A very creditable version too.

Before this thread fades away entirely, let me say that the best set of lyrics for this that I know isn't the set quoted above but the one made by Jon Hendricks (Monk's favourite lyricist), and recorded by Carmen McRae on "Carmen Sings Monk". She actually sings both sets, one after the other, and the Hendricks set is the second. See if you don't prefer it.

Here's the Carmen McRae set. It's straight from one of my song folders unchecked (I can't lay my hands on the recording just now; I normally like to recheck words from my folders - computer enhancement makes some things clearer these days!).

ROUND MIDNIGHT

It begins to tell at midnight, round midnight.
I do pretty well til after sundown.
Suppertime, I'm feeling sad,
But it really gets bad round midnight.

Memories always start round midnight, round midnight.
Haven't got the heart to send those memories
When my heart is still with you,
And old midnight knows it too.

When some quarrel we've had needs mending
Does that mean that our love is ending?
Darling I need you, lately I find
You're out of my arms and I'm out of my mind.

Let our love take wings some midnight, round midnight.
Let the angels sing of your returning.
Let our love be safe and sound
When old midnight comes around.

A pale and lonely moon lights the sky in the dark before the dawn,
I sit here in my room, how I sigh for the day that's come and gone.
  Another lonely day passes by,
And a new day's coming on at midnight.

Tears I've shed today will pause, waiting until tomorrow.
Dreams of what could be come close to me, timidly.
There's a brand new day in sight
At that time, round midnight.

Life's a game of chance and you're one of the minor players.
Look for what you love, the day to come harbours some.
Let your spirit stop the fight
At that time, round midnight.

Every day's gonna bring some sadness,
Every day's gonna bring some gladness,
So take what you can of the glad times,
Don't measure your pleasure in nickels and dimes.

You better look back on today, and you know when you've been unhappy.
Fears dawn chased away just might, at night, have their day.
Let your eyes put out their light
At that time, round midnight..

I think no more about today
For in a while this old day will be yesterday
Alone at midnight, here in my room
I sit here in the gloom
And let my dreams take flight,
  Round 'bout midnight.

Re the first post.
What a name for a folk group: The Felonious Monks!

Nearly as good as one I was in, a long time ago: Tiddly Pom Pom Pom.
(You have to be from Oz or Godzone to get the flavour of that.)
