Being good Episcopal children *WE* learned it from our parents...From talking with others I have since learned it was popular during WWII, (veterans were the ones who told me) and some of THEM are pretty sure they learned it from WWI vets. don't know how far back it goes. Another variation is "Put your shoulder next to mine and pump away" |

Cray said he got it from a former marine who was "an indifferent singer, his tune a sucession of doggedly rhythmic, indeterminate pitches over the compass of a fifth. For all its vagueness, it is clearly a set of the usual tune to which 'Roll Me Over' is sung, and for that reason, the song is classed here rather than under 'Shove It Home/Drive It On'. It remains nonetheless, an obvious cross between the two songs, and may be a milestone on the road from 'Shove It Home' to 'Roll Me Over'."
