Lyr/Tune Req: Valentino

I'm trying to find the complete lyrics to a song I heard a long time ago before I'd been converted to the joys of Folk. I can only remember the first few bars, but now that I sing in a group myself I would love to hear the song again with a view to singing it myself. Does anyone remember the lyrics:-

There on a dresser, A faded old picture, of one Valentino who'd stolen my heart.

It's not Antonio and his ice cream cart, is it?

Sounds a bit like 'Margarita' by Harvey Andrews.
Although to the best of my knowledge, Harvey didn't mention Valentino

No to both suggestions the ice-cream van suggestion would have the kids running in the opposite direction I expect. Who was it that said "Now we're going to have some folk music, so prepare yourself for six minutes of abject misery" Anyway as for the one by Harvey Andrews, no, it was sung by a woman. I think it'll probably fox most people because I've got a feeling that she changed her name.

Here are words as I remember them.
There on a dresser a faded old picture
Of one Valentino who'd stolen her heart.
He had escorted her once to a preview.
Something in which she had played a small part.
    Hollywood gossips reported them lovers.
But they will write anything if they are paid.
He went on to be a great movie star
    She never made the grade

    Chorus:
But how she lived within her mind
She dreamed of how they danced and dined
And in her dreams he'd run slow motion towards her.
    With his arms opened wide.
Oh how she lived within her mind.
She loved him till the day she ( he ?) died.
She'd run the reel again and again
Playing her lines as she did then.

She earned her living by waiting on tables
She worked on the swing shift for 35 years.
    And on every christmas she'd ( -------------)
And drown all her sorrows in memories and beers.
And on his birthday sh'd pay him a visit
And lovingly place flowers there by his grave.
She never once let any other man touch her.
    none did she ever crave.

    Chorus.

There on the beach on a soft summer evening.
A couple are walking along in the sand.
There in the surf her body is lying.
A dried up carnation is crushed in her hand.
There on the beach where they used to go walking.
She'd fallen to dreaming his arms held her tight.
Her face held the trace of a bitter sweet smile.
    That faded to the night.

The song is called 'Valentino"

I've heard it on "The Celtic Chillout Album" and fell for that song immediately.

Melanie Harrold wrote a song about Rudolf Valentino

As she put it - at the Trowbridge Folk Festival c 1976

a speedy guy suggested she wrote a song about him because of the film that came out about then with Rudolf Neureyev in the lead role.

VALENTINO
Words and Music by Pamela Phillips Oland

There on her dresser, a faded old picture
Of one, Valentino, who'd stolen her heart
He had escorted her once to a premiere
Of something in which she had played a small part

Hollywood gossips reported them lovers
But they would write anything if they were paid
And he went on to being a big movie star
But she never made the grade

CHORUS:        And so she lived within her mind
She loved him till the day she died
And in her dreams he ran slow-motion toward her
With his arms open wide

Oh how she lived within her mind
She dreamd of how they danced and dined
She ran the reel again and again
Playing her lines as she did then

She earned a living by waiting on tables
She worked on the swing shift for thirty-five years
And ev'ry Christmas they gave her a bonus
She drowned all her sorrows in mem'ries and beers

And on his birthday she'd pay him a visit
And lovingly placed flowers there on his grave
And she never once let any other man take her
None did she ever crave

CHORUS:        Because she lived within her mind
She loved him till the day she died
And in her dreams he ran slow motion towards her
With his arms open wide

Oh how she lived within her mind
She dreamed of how they danced and dined
She ran the reel again and again
Playing her lines as she did then

There on the beach on a soft windy evening
A couple were strolling along in the sand
There near the water a woman was lying
A dried old carnation was crushed in her hand

There on the beach where he loved to go walking
She'd fallen to dreaming his arms held her tight
And her face wore a trace of a bittersweet smile
That faded into the night

CHORUS:        Oh yes she'd lived within her mind
She loved him till the day she died
And in her dreams he ran slow motion towards her
With his arms open wide

Oh how she lived within her mind
She dreamed of how they danced and dined
She ran the reel again and again
Playing her lines as she did then
