Lyr/Chords Req: A Kiss in the Morning Early

Subject: A Kiss in the Morning Early
From: GUEST,Judith

Can someone give lyrics/chords for a song which, I believe , is called "A Kiss in the Morning Early?" I cannot remember who recorded it. I searched under "Kiss," "Shoemaker," & "Cobbler," and saw a reference to it in another thread, so I wondered if it might be listed in the DT under another name - ?

It starts out -

"Twas early one morning, a fair maid arose/and dressed herself up in the finest of clothes/off to the shoemaker's shop, sure, she goes/for her kiss in the morning early."

It goes on from there - her father thinks some rich man is courting her, & is upset when it turns out to be the cobbler. It might be a composed song - ?

Thanks.

"The Shoemaker's Kiss": verses only- J. Reeves' 'The Idiom of the People', #118; words and tune- F. Purslow's 'Marrow Bones'. It's not exactly like that which you quote.

It's also in DT.

'A Kiss In The Morning Early' was originally recorded by singer/songwriter Mick Hanly(on an album of the same name on the Mulligan label in 1976.) This album is long deleted...but I may have a copydeep in my vinyl vaults and will try and dig out the lyrics. I recently produced Mick's latest album 'Wooden Horses'...he's writing superb songs...worth checking out. PJC

I'm going to have my very first go at putting in line breaks with this. Hope someone will bail me out if I fail dismally! I learned this (the song, not the line breaks)from the Mick Hanly tape mentioned by PJC above, but I don't have the printed lyrics so I'm just writing what I think I hear. There are a few words I'm not entirely sure of which may well be in error, so if PJC can find the vinyl with the words that'd be great! Also, I don't know if this is traditional or has a known author.

A KISS IN THE MORNING EARLY

'Twas early one morning the fair maid arose
And dressed herself up in the finest of clothes
And off to the shoemaker's shop sure she goes
For a kiss in the morning early

The cobbler arose and he soon let her in
His awl and his hammer were neat as a pin
And he had the will for to greet her so slim
With a kiss in the morning early

Oh cobbler oh cobbler 'tis soon we'll be wed
And nestling together in a fine feather bed
So give me two shoes with two buckles of red
For my kiss in the morning early

The maid hid the shoes at the back of her waist
She praised his good cobbling and shoemaker's taste
And home to her father she (mournfully faced?)
For it was in the morning early

Oh father oh father I've got me a man
And he is the one I would wed if I can
As handsome as ever in leather did stand
For my kiss in the morning early

The father was thinking and thinking again
For to wed her to riches and have him for kin
Who knows but it might be a prince or a king
That she met in the morning early

Who knows but it might be a jobber from town
Or a wealthy sea captain who's sailed the world 'round
A man with some thousands and thousands of pounds
That she met in the morning early

So the father was smiling, his daughter embraced
And touching the buckles he drew back in haste
He spied the red shoes that were tied 'round her waist
For (it was?) in the morning early

Oh daughter oh daughter he started to shout
When he did discover what she was about
God knows it was none but that old cobbling clout
That you met in the morning early

Right! I'm just excited enough about successful line breaks that I had to express it in public! More importantly, though, I forgot to put a line break between Mick Hanly and my initials (MLV), so if anyone knows how to fix that I'd be grateful. Margaret

I read somewhere, P.J., that Mick's new album was recorded in the front room of your house!
Is this but idle gossip?

Hanly's source for the song was Colm O Lochlainn's 'More Irish Street Ballads' - #75 at page 148. The second line of every verse in the original was 'All alone in the lo li lo lin'. According to the O Lochlainn text, 'mournfully faced' is correct. The line after 'red shoes in the heel of her hand' is 'Oh it was in the morning early'. Hanly noted that he had 'doctored it a lot'. The seccond lines of the original were replaced and the tune altered.

O Lochlainn's note is: 'Air and words kindly sent to me by Brother Seamus Shiel S.D.B. of the Salesian College, Baile na Coille, Laois. It seems rather like an English country song but I have failed to find it in print'.

Here's a traditional Scottish text of 1827.

"Shoemaker, shoemaker are ye within?
A fal a falladdie failee;
Hae ye got shoes that will fit me so trim,
For a kiss in the morning early?"

"O fair may come in and see,
I've got but ae pair, and I'll gie them to thee
For a kiss in the morning early."

He's taen her in behind the bench,
And there he has fitted his own pretty wench
With a kiss in the morning early.

Whan twenty weeks war come and gane,
This maid cam back to her shoemaker then,
For a kiss in the morning early.

"Oh," says she, "I can't spin at a wheel,"
"If ye can't spin at a wheel, ye may spin at a rock,
For I go not to slight my ain pretty work
That was done in the morning early."

When twenty weeks war come and gone,
This maid she brought forth a braw young son,
For her kiss in the morning early.

"O says her father, we'll cast it out,
It is but the shoemaker's dirty clout,
It was got in the morning early."

"O says her mother, we'll keep it in,
It was born a prince and it may be a king,"
It was got in the morning early.

Whan oher maids gang to the hall,
She must sit and dandle her shoemakers awl,
For her kiss in the morning early.

Whan other maids gang to their tea,
She must sit at hame and sing balillalee,
For her kiss in the morning early.

I thought something about that last one seemed familiar. See file 'MAIDMILL in DT (and Herd's Scots Songs, ii, p. 148, 1776) and MacColl and Seeger's 'The Singing Island', # 93. MacColl sang it on 'Classic Scots Ballads', Tradition, TLP 1015).

Change miller at night to shoemaker in the morning and you get a new song!

Damn. In the second message, Bruce O says "Shoemaker's Kiss" is #118 in Idiom of the People, but my copy stops at #115 and I can't find a listing for anything like he described. Bruce also says "Kiss" is in the Digital Tradition, but I can't find it. I did find the related song, Maid Gaed Tae the Mill, in the DT.
I think Bruce is trying to frustrate me.

Bruce muddled the two Reeves books. The Shoemaker's Kiss is number 118 in The Everlasting Circle (1960): text noted by H.E.D. Hammond from G. Bowditch at Charmouth, March 1906.

Hammond got another version from William Bartlett at Wimbourne Union, Dorset, in September 1906. Frank Purslow included it in Marrowbones (EFDS Publications, 1965), and that's the set in the DT that Bruce referred to: THE SHOEMAKER'S KISS

Any ideas about the chords? I'm pretty sure it's A, then D, then A, but I can't figure out the rest! Anyone with a bit more guitar experience who could figure it out?

In fact, it is DAGDAD, capoed at the fifth. I learned it from the album at the time. Most of those lads around at then (with the notable exception of Paul Brady, who hardly ever used the tuning) played Trad in DAGDAD.

"...I'm pretty sure it's A, then D, then A,..."

That may well be the case when I think of it. Mick has a high range, and a few of his songs test the vocal chords and the lungs to their limit.

He would therefore have capoed at the 7th fret.

I have a tendency to bring the key down a notch or two, which is why I would have said the 5th fret initially.

I heard the Niamh Parsons version first, but I didn't like the ending of the song...no resolution. So, in the time honored tradition of folk music, I wrote some a new verse to resolve the song. Feel free to let me know what you think.

      C                               F
'Twas early one mornin', a fair maid arose,
      C                        G          C
And dressed herself up in the finest of clothes.
    C                                     F
Then off to the shoemaker's shop sure she goes,
       C                  G
For a kiss in the mornin' early.
    C                               F
The cobbler arose and he soon let her in,
    C                        G         C
His arm and his hammer were neat as a pin.
    C                                    F
And he had the will for to greet her so slim,
       C                  G   C
With a kiss in the mornin' ear-ly.
    C                                     F
Oh cobbler, oh cobbler 'tis soon we'll be wed,
    C                      G            C
And nestlin' together in a fine feather bed,
    C                                     F
So give me two shoes with two buckles of red,
       C                  G
For me kiss in the mornin' early.
    C                                     F
The maid hid the shoes in the back of her waist,
      C                            G          C
She praised his good cobbling and shoemaker's taste.
      C                                  F
Then told to her father, she mournfully faced,
       C                G   C
For it was in the mornin' ear-ly.
    C                               F
Oh father, oh father I've got me a man,
    C                      G       C
And he is the one I would wed if I can.
    C                               F
As handsome as ever in leather did stand,
       C                  G
For me kiss in the mornin' early.
         C                                  F
Now the father was thinkin', and thinkin' again,
       C                     G             C
For to wed her to riches and have them for him.
    C                                  F
Who knows but it might be a Prince or a King,
          C                G   C
That she met in the mornin' ear-ly.
C                                  F
Who knows but it might be a jobber from town,
      C                      G               C
Or a wealthy sea captain who sails the world round.
   C                                        F
A man with some thousands and thousands of pounds,
          C                G
That she met in the mornin' early.
       C                                  F
So the father was smilin', his daughter embraced,
      C                      G            C
Then touching the buckles he drew back in haste.
    C                                           F
He spied the red shoes that were tied round her waist,
       C                G   C
For it was in the mornin' ear-ly.
    C                                    F
Oh daughter, oh daughter he started to shout,
    C                     G       C
When he did discover what she was about.
    C                                       F
God knows 'twas none but that old cobblin' clout,
          C                G
That she met in the mornin' early.
    C                                       F
He ranted and roared, did the best that he could,
       C                           G          C
To convince her that a cobbler, indeed was no good,
    C                              F
To marry a cobbler would be a disgrace,
       C                  G
For a kiss in the mornin' early.
          C                                    F
But he'd given his blessing, she couldn't be swayed,
         C                     G             C
For she knew very well of the game that he played,
       C                                    F
She'd marry her cobbler to her father's dismay,
       C                  G   C
With a kiss in the mornin' ear-ly.
