Banjobenny, sorry you had so much trouble with this and welcome to the Mudcat.

If you will put the words HearMe in the Search box at the top of the threads or in the Filter Box and set the date back abut 90 days, then click go, you will find many threads which have a lot of helpful info about the program and what we all have learned by trial and error.

One thing I can think of offhand is do you have a Mac? Is so, it won't work for HEarMe. The folks at HearMe say they are working on a Mac friendly program but so far no go.

The other thing is if you have Netscape...sometimes folks have problems getting it with that, so you might try it with Internet Explorer.

One of us goes in there almost every evening so there will be plenty of chances. I know it can frustrating, but hang in there and you are bound to figure it out, either through something in one of those threads or through someone else's seeing your posting and coming up with better suggestions than I am have.

Good luck...it will be worth it and I look forward to *meeting* you in there sometime.

You've got it right there kat and some Windows users have had to resort to using IE instead on Netscape for Hearme as the only other suggestion Hearme give which is uninstalling and re-installing Hearme has not worked.

One other point, we are all saying PC's, specifically, it must be a PC running Windows 95 or higher (the full list of the minimum requirements are in the hearme FAQ). I run 2 operating systems on my PC and my other one, Linux is not supported.

It seems pretty bad to me and perhaps I'm being harsh on Hearme but the promised Mac version still hasn't arrived, the only OS they support are Microsoft ones and now their product seems to have a bug which is forcing some people to use a Microsoft browser.

I opened the room about a quarter to ten EDT. After a slow start, a good session.

I sang only a few songs:

Worried Man Blues
Can't You Stand to Let Him Go?" (Gnome song)
Froen Logger (On special request by MBO.)

OK, this should be on a new thread but the machine won't let me make one. Is this discrimination? Is it 'cos I's*****? (You probably have to be English to get that. I'm told the USA does not understand Ali G at all).

Anyway, I went to have a "hearme" the other night and both Alison (I think it was) and I were unhappy with sound quality. I don't know if she fixed hers. I have since been and fiddled for quite some time with the audio setup wizard and other gadgets, and I can't get rid of a sort of a click and some distortion if I sing loud, no matter how much I turn the gain down. I've tried the IBM Mic which came with my speech recognition. I've tried a Shure SM10A. I've tried a Tandy (Radioshack) lapel mic. I've tried AKG D190E, AKG D880S, Samson, Sony SM58 copy, and a cheap Tandy karaoke mic. I've tried adding a little analogue reverb and I've tried a little 4-way (Tandy again) mic mixer, and all the different mic matching transformers I've got.

Has anyone any suggestions? Most of the mics are fine through a full-bore PA system with my daughter (who can deafen a 747 at takeoff) singing flat out through them, so it isn't a case of overloading the mics.

Richard, I've a feeling I have responed to you before on this subject but certain users have found that cheap computer mikes work better for hearme (and possibly other programs) than professional quality equipment. Most of the sound issues seem to revolve around the sound getting into the PC in the first instance and what some of us have discovered is that a good starting point is ensuring that that a .wav file records and plays back locally to your PC.

your connection to your ISP and general conditions on the internet ALSO have an effect. I have noticed it many times on HearMe.

True MMario and on that score, it is always worth checking with others as to what they are hearing. Once a connection is established, everything is sent to Hearme's servers and relayed back to the other users from there. It quite common for one user to loose sound or have bad quality sound where others hear reasonably well(Hearme is never perfect sound wise but, IMO, overall it is perfectly acceptable for our needs) for this reason.

Thanks Jon. All I need now is a cheaper Mic! I'll see if I can get the lapel mic to behave next time. Yes, I thought I'd posted the request before, too, but then could not find it and as I was having some troubles I assumed that the post had been eaten by my computer.
