I have this recording, done by Mac & Bob in the late 1920's.

In their songbook, published in 1931, it's attributed to "Traditional."

According to this page (click) it was recorded by The Carter Family. Mac Benford and Ray & Ina Patterson are also listed. See the page for album titles.

Dolly Parton included this song on her live album " Heart Songs"

Here's a portion of a thread where I posted the lyrics, but it never made the DT database:

Hold Fast to the Right.

I have it in an old song book attributed to Robert and William Brumley, 1938. However, didn't they just collect songs?

The Carter Family's version is on The Carter Family 'Country Music Hall of Fame Series' MCA MCAD-10088. Jim Dixon posted lyrics to all the songs on this CD that had not been posted previously.

Im 77 years young and have followed Southern gospel music all my life and the first ones I heard do it were the carter family but checking back further the song has roots much older I believe. Dolly Parton did sing it on an album once but she had nothing to do with the writing of it nor its beginnings

Dock Boggs did a bluesy version he called Mother's Advice and it was covered by Duck Baker and Molly Andrews with some really hot guitar by Baker.

Fanny Crosby is given credit for the song at that link. She also used about a gazillion AKAs, too. Whether she's the originator or not I have no idea.
