Bill, the tune for the Lambton Worm was going around in my head all morning. It seems like just yesterday that you guys were here in Montana.

I can hardly stand it!!! Last night at around 9:15 these two strange men showed up at my door completely unexpectedly. One had this unexplained longing for a "cuppa tea." I am thrilled as well as flattered that they knew I would be delighted to have this surprise stop on their itinerary. We carried on past midnight, then they crashed in my livingroom (Alan, I never did ask you how the cot was- thanks for inaugurating it for me!).
On their way to Vixen's, now, after a wonderful visit. And we didn't say "farewell," but rather, "seeya!" Old Songs is just a few days away. What a wonderful treat!!!

Thanks Tony, we had a wonderful time. Even though, at the last minute, my Dad couldn't make it, we decided to continue with our plans. We wanted to meet all those good Canadian Catters.

Allan arrived here!! in Bristol, CT, earlier this afternoon; they should have gotten to Vixen's (Norwich,CT) by now for sure. Allan, I'm sorry I missed you. Thanks for that little treasure. There should be a letter for you at Vic's. I wish I could be there. Have a great time and a safe passage home. m

Howdy all! I really like the "Mudcatalyst"!!! All of this is food for thought, and as Allan said, food for the soul in quiet times to come. Allan, I am truly proud of you for conceiving such a thing, and Bill, I am so glad you could be there. Might not have happened without you-definately would have been different. You have both gone out and realised your fantasies---made a difference. Looking forward to your return!

I'll send a couple to Max anyway, so he gets a record of as many of the stops as he can for the Resource pages. Then he can use what he wants to.

Now I know why Duckboots wanted me to sell all of mine.

Thanks for posting the photos Tony. You can even see my resonator serving dish on the Pot Luck food table.

Rick, I think you were just worried that someone will want you to teach them the accordion and then you will really have to deal with Duckboots.

It is a shame Peter's handsome face was not captured in the group photos. My new nickname for you Peter is Bashful.

Bonnie, you should know by now that Peter NEVER lets his image be captured on film. His upcoming book is subtitled "International Environmentalist of Mystery". You CAN see his hair though, but as you know...it's a rug!

Catspaw, Duckboots is in the front row next to Sophocleese. So I wasn't missin' her THAT much!

any truth to the rumor that Peter is still wanted for questioning in several major monkey-wrenching episodes in the Northwestern US, and therefore must take pains to prevent any photos being disseminated? Or is his mug just a certified lens-cracker?

Nice photos, Kat. I realize now I took only the picture outside when Bill and Allan arrived at my house, and none others here in Bozeman. The rest were all taken in Jardine. Ryan was too shy to play music in front of "company", but he has been playing the mandolin constantly since Bill and Allan's visit. He added Drowsy Maggie and Swallowtail Jig to his repertoire today. click here

Marvellous pictures and stories by all. I wish there were more Mudcatters in Michigan. We are building a bit at a time. This is why I fell in love with this wacky, imperfect bit of heaven a long time ago. Look at us, folks. All these old friends, just met, joining together around two lovely human beings and just enjoying one another.

It was funny, but tonight I was listening to a talk show host as I made my way home after some 15 hours in the saddle. He and his guest were postulating that with the advent of the Internet the world has become so impersonal. The analogy he used was that in the old days, before air conditioning and the Internet, folks sat on the front porch and got to know each other. I found meself thinking of Carolyn and Sandy, Catspaw, Liam's Brother, Kath, THE FAIR ONE(whom I pursue shamelessly and relentlessly across the cyber hills and dales), Dave and Pam, Rick and Heather, Banjo Bonnie, Max, Bert, BBC, Art, Catspaw, Barry Finn, Animaterra, Blessings Barbara, Vixen, Cara, Allen C., Bill Sables, Peter T., MMario, Meebo, IvanB, Capt. Bob, Skarpi, Wolfgang, Murray, Sorcha, Big Rib, Leej, Dick Greenhaus, KarenK, .........and on and on (don't get mad, I just ran out of room). All friends, some of them personal friends. And I found meself thinking, this eejit has no clue. My guess is he has a hard time making friends............period. You folks are the best. I can't wait until I can make this trip.

All the best,

Big Mick

Well, now I know what all the fuss has been about. I spent last evening at Tim & Vixen's place - a perfect evening on the bank of a beautiful river. Tim and Vixen provided a great setting for the CT adventure segment. Alice has agreed to post the pics I just sent her. Thanks Alice.

Alan & Bill are everything that has been said about them. The Missionaries of Mudcat did it again - bringing together a bunch of really compatible souls to share laughs and love and song.

In addition to a group of Tim and Vixen's wonderful and talented friends, there was Tiger (whose song collection is second only to Dick Greenhouse's, I understand), Bill, Alan, Tim, Vixen, yours truly, and the newest member of the mudcat family, Sawman.

It was great to be near the tail end of this trip and hear Bill & Alan speak of all the wonderful times they have had with fellow mudcatters along the way. The constant references to people by their mudcat names brought a smile to my face. This little group of humanity that reaches around the world constantly amazes me. You are all truly fine people.

At the risk of opening a whole 'nother can of worms, Catspaw, you have been at every stop on this trip - at least in spirit.

Thank you, guys, for pulling all these mudcatters out from behind their computers.

Tim and I sent Bill and Allan on their way at 8:30 this morning. What a fun time! It was great to see them, and Tiger, again, and to meet dwditty and sawman. I had never heard a saw played--WOW! Utterly ethereal! Dwditty played some cool (and funny!!!) blues, and Tiger played a nifty assortment of songs (how on *earth* does he remember them all???)

As for the setting, I'd *like* to take credit for arranging wonderful, temperate day and evening, a fragrant blooming bean tree, two aromatic honeysuckle vines, picturesque mountain laurel, and a peaceful river, but all I can honestly lay claim to is having a cool collection of unique and interesting friends who provided pot-luck food, spontaneous entertainment, and good company.

What fun! I'm so proud to have been a part of it all!!

More fun than you should be allowed to have!

Great hoot at Vixen's (thanks Vic & Tim). Into that bucolic scene, Vic brought a plethora of local friends, plus the 'Catters, for a great evening of tunes and fun. Not too many sax solos at other 'Cat functions I'll bet.

To my new, current and future Mudcat buddies:

Vic (who will play w/Tim at my daughter's wedding in August) - great shooow!

Bill - understated elegance. Could hear a pin drop when you began one of your numbers or stories. And my "Three Score and Ten" lyrics have been corrected, thanks to your missionary work.

Allan - sweet guitar, man. That wind song blew me away.

dwditty - you've gotta show me those blues progressions. How about a Dave Van Ronk record swap/taping session?

Sawman - how do you do that? And thanks to Rich for introducing you.

By the way, that soon-to-be-auctioned Mudcat Guitar sounds real nice. Bill has logged more than 90 'Cats on this trip (so far) and I imagine most have signed it.

Let's do it again!

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to give dw's baretone saw a real workout.

During the evening I discussed useing sawman as my nickname. Bill had suggested using tomsawyer. Bill I did consider it. However on the way home kwsawman seemed more appropriate. Thanks once again a very warm soul nurturing evening.

Allan talks about writing "a book, or something..." He has so much material, not to mention digital recordings, photos, reminiscences, an so on, that it looks like a multi-media web page and e-book may be the only way to get it all down. And even then, how do you record the beauty of a memory, the joy of waking up in the morning knowing that two of the sweetest blokes on earth are in your home, the pleasure of singing harmonies over the breakfast coffee, the all-around gol-danged fun of the whole adventure??? Thanks a million, guys. Now, you're doing it again next year, right?

"There's no place like home. There's no place like home. There's no place like home!"

Well, I tried that - even clicked my heels together a couple of times but despite my efforts, I still had to drive all the way home from Old Songs. Yes, I made it home safely. The little troll in my car kept me safe from harm - even when, at seventy miles an hour, three cars in front of me simultaneously made right-angle turns toward an exit. I still don't know how I escaped unharmed. There was some serious miracle-type-stuff happening there.

Oh, BTW, the trip is not quite over. I'll tell you more in a day or so.

This is my first day back at work so I doubt I'll have time to post any more than this brief note.

I just want to thank all of you who became involved with this trip - either directly or vicariously. We felt your presence at every turn in the road.

Thanks.

This afternoon Bill and I will be making a very special part of the journey. We will be going to West Virginia to visit my (our) good friend, David C.. David, as you may remember, was originally slated to be a part of this Adventure but was forced to remain at home due to some medical problems. It is our hope that David will honor us by placing his signature among the others on the Sables & Clark Mudcat Adventure Guitar.

The current plan is to spend some time on my mother's farm about twenty miles farther down the road from David C.'s. The small town of Moorefield, WV is nearby. Here Bill, (who wisely opted to NOT be in Washington D.C. on the 4th) will witness first-hand how a small town celebrates Independence Day.

From the moment Bill arrives in town he will smell (and probably sample) the roasting chicken quarters (fresh from the town's poultry processing plant) that the local Lions Club will be serving. There'll be the "sidewalk sale" out in front of the Ben Franklin (dime) store. At about 2 in the afternoon he will see the "big" parade marching down Main Street. Later in the day he will witness the crowning of the Poultry Queen. Then, at sundown, will come the fireworks. I think it will be a full and interesting day for brother Bill.

Hi there mudcatters Bill is safely back home and looking well for his adventures. He turned up at the Jug Inn on Saturday night for my birthday celebrations claiming jet lag, but still managing to sing us a few Northeast songs along with some of my friends from Hartlepool. Quack

I would like to thank all of the catter friends who I met up with on this trip, It will be an everlasting memory for me as well as for Allan. I don't think either of us expected the hospitality we were given and were both amazed by the talent of those we met. This truly is a most caring cyber community. One or two others deserve credit for the trip,
Max who created Mudcat in the first place and brought together this community.
AnnaP who had the very first gathering.
Lorna my wife and Kathy Allan's girlfriend for allowing both of us the time and freedom to go on this wild adventure. ( when I left England my son asked if Lorna would be OK on her own. I said she would be OK with Sally our labrador dog to look after her. On the very day I left Sally sadly died from cancer of the liver and Lorna kept this news from me so as not to spoil the trip. My son and daughter then bought her two kittens so as she would have company while I was away)
The catters who we met up with also deserve credit for putting up with us.
But mostly I would like to thank Allan for organising the trip. He put in hours of work sorting a route out and contacting the various people we met, He sat for nine thousand miles listning to me talking about everything and anything including my great love of the French! and never once told me to shut up. He is a great man.
There was only one regret however and Allan will agree with me on this, We didn't get to meet Catspaw!!!
Anyway I hope you all continue to meet together regularly and keep the music and friendship going.
Cheers Bill

Actually, there are two regrets, (and I think Bill will agree). The other one is that we didn't get to meet ALL of you!

Well, here are the two of you. STill side by side in this thread. The magic of mudcat continues. I have noticed a resurgence in that specialness called mudcat since your tour. The famous radio show, hearme sessions, and some really great threads, not to mention your trip itself. As I have said before, you both have contributed something very special here. I don't think that many will have a problem if I speak for them and say, "We appreciate you."

Glad to hear Bill is home safe. It's not over, it's just on hold until next time, right? It was my privilege to meet you both, and share time, music and friends with you. Bill and Lorna, I am so sorry to hear of your friend Sally's passing. It is always hard to lose friends, no matter how many (or few) legs they have. We humans can't help it if we're two short. Love you both.

I too,am sad to hear of the passing of your friend Sally, Bill. Your wife is obviously a special person who understands you very well. Lorna sounds like the type of partner that those of us who need to be able to live in, learn about, and help to make better this world, needs to have.

I loved having you in my home and was struck by the ease with which you make friends. But a telling moment for me, always, is how kids take to someone. They can spot a gentle soul in a heartbeat. And my Ciara took to both you and Allan immediately. I have chosen to preserve the memory of your visit as a feeling. Each time I think of it, the feeling is one of having been graced by gentle spirits. And my head is filled with music. You lent physical form to the Mudcat, made it real. When the song of this place is sung, your trip will occupy several verses. Well done, lads.

All the best,

Big Mick

Unless the lottery is much kinder than it has been in the past, Alison, the current plan is to visit Australia and New Zealand (with a stop along the way in Hawaii!) in 2002. It seems like forever away from the present. But it is a real goal which I can barely wait to attain.

As we all know, life can be capricious and cause plans to be changed. But sometimes this can work out to be a good thing. So it is possible that a trip to OZ could happen even sooner!

Meanwhile, know that if your plane even so much as touches down on the runway at Dulles (near Washington, D.C.) on your way to the Emerald Isle, I will be there with a boarding party armed to the teeth with pennywhistles, guitars and such.

God, we miss you already. It is like my neighbour's kid who sat up the last two nights reading Harry Potter. I asked his mother how it went, and she said: "Great, the only problem is he finished it (600 plus pages) and started howling -- do I have to wait another year for the next one!!!"

yours, Peter T.

I believe that the Chevy belonged to Steve, the guitarist who played gigs with Rex. It was an odd color for such a car. In the photos it appears to be red. But actually it was an odd sort of brownish color. But the car was in beautiful condition. If I ever had one, it would have to be fire engine red though.

The car was Dan Obrien's, Al. Remember the guy who brought his wife and fiddle-playing son?

I had forgotten about what Kat noticed. Every guy there. Including Dan and Steve had a fuzzy chin. Of course everyone knows, all proper men wear beards.
