The lyrics to "Winin' Boy Blues" (Jelly Roll Morton) are here (click). This is Janis Joplin's version, but is quite close to Hot Tuna's. There are more lyrics of songs written and covered by Hot Tuna here (click)

Could it be Winding Boy? I seem to recall a song
by that title from a Blues Project (?) album in the
60s, done by Mark Spoelstra (?).

Good tune. The way Winding is pronounced, it sounds
like Wining. Can't find it in DigiTrad. The only
verse I recall is the second or third:

Sister, sister, dirty little sow.
Sister, sister, dirty little sow, little sow,
Sister, sister, dirty little sow,
Tryin' to be a bad girl, but she don't know how
Just a Winding Boy, don't deny my name.

Oh yeah, here's more, but don't remember the order:

I'm a Winding Boy, don't deny my name.
Just a Winding Boy, don't deny my name, my name.
Winding Boy, don't deny my name, pick it up
and shake it like sweet staving chain,
Just a Winding Boy, don't deny my name.

Mama, Mama take a look at Sis.
Mama, Mama, take a look at Sis, look at Sis.
Mama, Mama, take a look at Sis, down on the levy
doing the double twist.
Just a Winding Boy, don't deny my name.

Think there's at least one more verse that starts:

Papa, Papa ...

Seem to recall reading back then, when I was young
and consumed with Blues, that a Winding Boy worked
on docks or on Mississippi River boats, literally
winding the chains that bound, and/or lifted cargo.
Of course, I could have invented that. As we know
a good part of the 60s was pretty hazy.

However, I have no doubt that someone will leap
to correct any fallacies I have offered. Surely
someone can give you the whole song and links to it.

Good luck.

Ahhhh, Pene Azul --

We cross posted. The versions are very similar.
Glad to know I didn't make up the whole thing.

Yeah, Giac, nice simulpost :^) It makes sense that Winin' is short for winding, since it has no h, as in whining. Thanks for the info. I love the song, and now it makes much more sense to me.

I have heard that winin' boy is the kid who served the piano players in the brothels.

You can hear the "originator" (trad.!) sing/play this song here

There's also a great version on Leon Redbone's album "Double Time" (WB 2971)
Soundclip available here

Whinin' Boy was a character in August Wilson's AWESOME play "The Piano". Watch the Hallmark TV version for an absolutely mind-blowing version of "Alberta" sung by Charles S. Dutton and Courtney B. Vance, among others...
