G'day Murray,

I have them on a Bogle recording somewhere (perhaps ~Just the Funny Stuff). If no one else gets back before, I will hunt them out for you.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

From: Bob Bolton

G'day Murray,

I did find this one ... indeed on Just the Funny Stuff and here are the words (I have not transcribed the tune - but you did not ask for that):

THE GREAT AUSSIE TAKEAWAY
Words and music by Eric Bogle

I'm an ordinary Aussie bloke; cultured, clean and neat.
I do not drink or swear or smoke, but boy! I like to eat.
Keep your poofy parlour food, your Greek and Lebanese,
Turkish and Italian, French and Japanese,
What makes me mouth water isn't any one of these;
No, I like take-away.

Hamburgers and steak sangers, dim sims and sausage rolls,
Saveloys, meat pies, hot dogs and beef rissoles.
For value and vitamins they sure beat all the rest,
A take-away every day, puts hairs upon your chest,
But just what's in the bloody things is anybody's guess,
But I still like take-aways.
I bought myself a pie, the other night, down at my local café,
I was just about to take a bite, when the pie – it screamed out "Neigh!"
And right before me eyes, the bloody thing rears up,
Shoots out through the front door like a runaway truck,
The last thing I heard, it had won the Melbourne Cup,
But I still like take-aways.

I bought meself some saveloys, though, to tell yous all the truth,
I wish I'd worn me corduroys, when one of them went "Woof!"
It jumped right off the table, around the room did run,
I thought I'd seen it all mate, but the best was yet to come,
For it cocked itself against me leg and bit me in the bum,
But I still like take-aways.

I bought a hamburger with egg and chips, I had to get a bite somehow,
As I began to lick me lips, the burger screamed out "Miaow!",
It scratched me on the nose, I threw it to the ground,
It ran up a gum tree, I felt such a silly clown,
But the fire brigade came and got the silly burger down,
But I still like take-aways.

I ordered up my favourite treat, steak sangwich on a plate;
Before I could begin to eat, my sangwich screamed out "Wait!",
I'm a buffalo, or brumby, cat, or dog or grizzly bear,
I'm true blue Aussie kangaroo, cooked medium rare,
But it gave me a salute and sang "Advance Australia Fair"
But I still like take-aways. .

I still like take-aways.

I still like take-aways.

I still like take-aways.

I still like take-aways.

G'day again Murray,

I finaly checked my transcription against the stereo (instead of a battered old Walkman, with flat batteries and minimal headphones) and found two errors in the text I posted last night. Line 2 in the 3rd stanza should be:
As I began to lick me lips, ME burger screamed out "Miaow!",
and the final echo line is:
I still like take-away... (repeated 6 times, fading away).

Bob Bolton

Many thanks Bob. I think I can reconstruct the tune. I had forgotten it and I heard somebody playing it (possibly from the same album as yours) under circumstances where I couldn't pick out the words.

G'day Murray,

Far be it from me to say that circumstances where (you) couldn't pick out the words meant "being sung by Wee Eric"! (Well, he does tend to try to panel beat his Scots brogue into an Aussie accent in his humorous stuff ... and sometimes it comes out as neither.)

Regard(les)s,

Yeah, part of it was Eric's take-away Australian accent, and part of it was that it was at a party and there was a lot of talking and guitar tuning.

G'day Murray,

I see your post apeared while I was nattering about The Black Velvet Band. If you can't get the tune sorted out, I will either transcribe it or send you a tape copy of the track.

Regards,

Bob Bolton
