need lyrics or source recording of Carter Family (?) singing a song that has the line "I'm goin' back to Texas where the lonesome coyotes howl". I believe the song may be called "Lonesome Pines".

I don't have the lyrics now, but the song is Lonesome Pine Special. Sara said she wrote it. Lonesome Pine is a train. It was recorded in 1930 for Victor. It is part of the re-releases by Rounder "Worried Man Blues" C1067. If you don't have access, I will listen and post the words. Just give me the word via this thread.

I have two copies--one on Worried Man Blues from Rounder C1067 a cassette. The other by Maybelle and Sara on Bear Family, 1963. I can listen and transcribe if these sources are unavailable. Let me know at hartley@toto.pitton.com. Your e-mail address does work from my end.

Here are the lyrics to "Lonesome Pine Special" as sung by Mother Maybelle Carter.

LONESOME PINE SPECIAL
D
I was walking out this morning,
D     A7                    D
With rambling on my mind;
D                          G         D
Gonna catch that special train,
D             A7             D
Called the Lonesome Pine.

(Chorus the same as the verse)

You could hear the whistle blowing,
As she's coming down the line;
That's the train I'll catch this morning,
To ease my troubled mind.

D       A7                  D
Odel-aideeo-oleeoh-laydee
D      A7                  D D7
Odel-aideeo-oleeoh-lay
G                         D         A7                    D
Take me back to Texas, back to my old home.

2. Oh, I'm weeping like a willow,
And morning like a dove;
There's a girl way out in Texas,
I know I really love.

3. Oh, give me back my rifle,
Oh, give me back my gun;
Give me back my girl in Texas,
And my rambling days are done.

4. Oh, I'm going back to Texas,
Where the lonesome coyotes whine;
Where the longhorn cattle's lowing,
'Round that cabin home of mine.

I've got it slightly different:

LONESOME PINE SPECIAL

I was walking out this morning with rambling on my mind;
I'm going to catch the special, that train called Lonesome Pine;
You can hear the whistle blowing and she's coming down the line,
That's the train I catch this morning to ease my troubling mind.

Hodel-ay-ho, ho-lay-ho-lee,
Hodel-ay-ho, ho-lay-ho-lee,
Take me back to Texas,
Back to my old home.

Oh I'm weeping like a willow and I'm mourning like a dove,
There's a girl way back in Texas that I know I really love,
Oh I'm going back to Texas where the lonesome coyotes whine
With the longhorn cattles roaming round that cabin home of mine.

Oh give me back my rifle, oh give me back my gun,
Give me back my home in Texas and my rambling days are done.

As sung by the Carter Family on RCA Victor EP RCX-7110, "The Original and Great Carter Family" volume 5. Recorded 25 November 1930.

The Carters can be heard singing this on YouTube. It has a nice tune.

She doesn't sing "the longhorn cattle's roaming," she sings it correctly, "the longhorn cattle are roaming," with a nifty little curl in the melody which is worth preserving.
