Info Req: Childgrove

In the Oak Publication Fiddler's Fake Book, on
page 67, is a tune called Childgrove. The B part is
very similar to the Burl Ives and Kingston Trio
tunes for The Escape of Old John Webb.

I can't find any reference to Childgrove in DigiTrad
or in the threads.

Does anyone know if there is a connection between this
tune and, for instance, Childs 187 and 188, or how
about anything on the history of Childgrove?

The margin notes say it is English, New England and
says it was recorded by Fennig's All-Star String Band.

Thanks,
Giac

Childgrove (or Child Grove) was published in the 11th edition of John Playford's English Dancing Master in 1701. There is no connection to Francis James. And since it's a dance tune, no words to put in the DT.

Thanks, Anglo. Kind of you to give me the info.
I like the tune and now I know a bit about it.

Childgrove is a longways set; you can find instructions for dancing it  HERE  and  HERE.  Staff notation for the melody as published in Playford may be seen  HERE.

Thanks, Malcolm. Good sites. While I'm not a dancer,
I was intrigued nonetheless. Have forwarded the sites
to some friends who will appreciate them also.

Hi there,

I've read the threads so I know that the dance number called 'Childgrove' was published in 1701, what I'd like to know is if there's any information about when it was written because sometimes there's a huge gap between the time its written vs the time its published.
