BS: Giant building for fun and hernias

There have been a couple of people here who (stupidly) voiced an interest in giants and giant building - Selby, you were one, and I think it was JohnB or Malcolm wanted to know more.

So, here is another English/European tradition we can explore.

Anyone else out there seen giants in their town?? In the UK they have appeared at Sidmouth and Hastings Jack in the Green festivals, there are giants in London, Manchester, Dorchester, Sheffield and Hastings, the BIGG (British Isles Giant Groups) has a register of at least 2 dozen, and there are more than you can possibly imagine on the continent.....

Giant building goes back to prehistory, but they were mostly mediaeval - there are records dating back to the 1500's for at least 2, and most large towns, cities and civic guilds had a representational giant.

The modern ones have been going about 20 years now - and we can always do with more!

If you want to find out more, let me know..... via the usual channels....

And if you want to see what one looks like theres a picture on my pix sheet in the Resources, Gianters tend to be Friendly, Folkies and/or Morris dancers, and Beer (or in my case Cider) drinkers, so if you see one , buy the porter a beer ,or the beer a porter...

Occasionally they are grumpy ba****ds but that's usually just after a carry and before the beer!

Having being involved with the 2 giants that where built at the whitby festival, I with the help of the kids at my childrens primary school built the pied piper. he was followed around the area of the schol by the school recorder group assisted by some friends with melodians & fiddles. The pied piper marched again this year to invite people to the summer fayre. It is my intention to build a more professional one in the near future. Then I will be shouting for HELP. Keith

Selby - do tell us more about your giants - if we'd known about you, we could have wangled you an invite to Sheffield - it's not that far away after all.....
