Lyr Req: Something after Roy Bayley

Ok,there's another thread. A couple of months ago we had the extreme luck to have Roy Bayley performing at the Australian National Folk Festival.

Among songs he played, there were two I would like to track back somehow. I'm pretty sure they weren't his.

One Was the song of a soldier. He performed it with the Fagans(australian made family)and Nancy Kerr(familiar to UK fellows)

The last bit went sort of:

The enemy is on the other side/ Wherever you draw the line/ The enemy is the ruling class / Who draws the bloody line/

Not for me/ One,two,three,four/ Not for me,not anymore/

The other one was the song of a Whale, who wakes up one morning to find her companion dead. The refrain was: My soul has been thorn apart/ and I am bleeding/ My heart has been raped/ and I am crying/ all beauty around me/ and I am screaming/ I'm the last of the great whales/ and I am dying// He sang it in the morning, making me cry on my cornflakes. Anyone who could help?!

The second song is The Last Leviathan; the lyrics are on a current thread:

The first one is on a cassette called The writing on the wall, with Tony Benn, but the name escapes me. I think it is the one about a soldier who deserted in mid campaign, due to concientious objections. The title of the song is the name of the soldier, but as I'm supposed to be up a step ladder painting the window frame at the moment, I can't help you. I'll see what I can find when I get down.....

I will do it, I promise, but I'm still painting the bedroom, got to the wall behind the computer unit so will have to be offline for a day. I'll post later tonight (UK time).

Ballad of Vic (?) Williams.

Went AWOL during the Gulf War, returned to his unit at the end of the conflict. Gaoled in a classic British miscarriage of justice (apart from anything else the conflict was unlawful, since the UN was acting in clear violation of its own charter). And as I recall there was a further furore when Amnesty International adopted him as a Prisoner of Conscience.

Roy has also recorded it on CD, I think, but I can't find it on his web site:

http://www.stirrings.co.uk/folkzone/artistes/roybailey/index.html

My guess is that it's a Robb Johnson song.

That's the one, still can't find it, been busy rewiring the house! Well it was really just putting the computer back together again, but as it involved 6 mains plugs, 7 pieces of equipment and cutting a hole in the table, it took longer than I thought.....

OK, I got it right . . Bailey recorded it on the wonderful (if somewhat uneven) Band of Hope CD "Rythm and Reds", which I think is still available. (Band of Hope were Bailey, Carthy, Swarbrick, Kirkpatrick and Stephan Hannigan). And it IS by Robb Johnson, who's nowhere near as well known as a song writer as he deserves to be.

The CD sleeve has the words but no notes . . were you actually asking for the lyrics; if so I'll try to bring them in tomorrow.

"Rythm and Reds"?!(Goodness me,I'll never find it here in Oz...it'n not even available at the shop...I'll have to go to England!)Was there some sort of radical/socialist idea shaping this album?! Yes,I remember now Roy mentioning the band. I love this sort of ballads. Thank you all,you made the girl happy. (You're still waiting for spring,Liz?!Are you in Greenland or are you one of those antipodeans walking on their hands - coz'this is what I thought of South Emisph.as a european kid)?!

Yup, I'd say there's some sort of radical/socialist idea shaping most of what Roy does (actually, I thought that was also true of the Fagans - and sorry in advance if I've got the spelling of their surname wrong). It does set out to be a "political" album. Martin Carthy is also overtly radical/socialist; Kirkpatrick and Swarb seem less overtly so.

I think Suzanne may already have the lyrics of "Vic Williams" on her web site . . but I've lost my link to it.

I'll try to post the track listing.

They sound pretty much like-and I confess I love protest/political/bloody be aware/etc folk. After all.England was first on Industrial Revolution ,therefore first on socialism and blah blah...but the "Red" thing got me surprised anyway! I'd love to have those lyrics, but there is no rush - I'm going off technology for a week,I would have to train koockaburras(damn it,how do they spell it?!) to fly messages around to get in touch with mudcatters...!

Pointless training the kukabaras, they only laugh at you.

Tape has mysteriously vanished, I blame the cable fairies - you know the ones, you store your speaker/mike/headphone cables neatly and overnight someone turns them to black spaghetti....

Can someone direct me to real life please, my reality check has bounced....

The Ballad of Vic Williams should be under this one, unless some eager so and so posts in between....

Found it in the music book cupboard, along with a few others that have been gone too long.....

Lena, Believe it or not, even in Blair's Britain there are still one or two of us alive who are, or have been, Commies. I'm surprised the Yanks still trade with us. *BG* Delighted to hear that the estimable Roy Bailey has carried the message so far south. And what a voice!

In Blair's Britain there are more and more "commies" every day - otherwise how else would the great Red Ken become Mayor of London?!

I'm proud that the only politician who has kissed my baby was the even greater Tony Benn himself.....

Here's the track listing for "Rhythm and Reds". Good political stuff. Although I find the openining instrumental medly pretty ordinary (apart from its final modulation, which is really naff . . )

1. Nonesuch/Cheshire Rounds/Lancashire Hornpipe (Instrumental)/Boxing Day (Robb Johnson)

2. If they come in the morning (Jack Warshaw)

3. See it come down (John Pole - he of "The Internet Song)

4. The Ballad of Vic Williams (Robb Johnson)

5. Blood Brother (Tom Robinson)

6. Send me back to Georgia (Si Kahn)

7. Carthy's March/The Lemmon Tree (D Swarbrick) (Instrumental(

8. Who reaps the profit? Who pays the price? (Leon Rosselson)

9. Nottingham Captain (Bill Prince)

10. The last ploughshare (John Connolly)

11. Hard time of Old England (Trad + additional words by Band of Hope)

The parallels between "Vic Williams" and "Georgia" are fascinating in themselves.

It's on MusicFolk MPCD512.

A little late but better than never I suppose...
I've been searching for the chords to this for years and cannot find them anywhere. after a lot of trial and error i've finally worked out something close on guitar:

Em          G                     D
My name it is Vic williams I was a soldier to the Queen
Em          G                   D
I joined up to defend me country in my teens
       C                  D             G                  F#
not to do whatever they tell you to, wherever they draw the line
       Em                  G          D      F#      D
For the ruling class in Ulster or the capital on the Rhine
            C    D    G       F#
not for me one, two, three, four
Em
Not for me not any more.
