A couple of months ago we had the extreme luck to have Roy Bayley performing at the Australian National Folk Festival. Among songs he played,there were two I would like to track back somehow. I'm pretty sure they weren't his. One Was the song of a soldier. He performed it with the Fagans(australian made family)and Nancy Kerr(familiar to UK fellows) The last bit went sort of: The enemy is on the other side/ Wherever you draw the line/ The enemy is the ruling class / Who draws the bloody line/ Not for me/ One,two,three,four/ Not for me,not anymore/ The other one was the song of a Whale,who wakes up one morning to find her companion dead. The refrain was: My soul has been thorn apart/ and I am bleeding/ My heart has been raped/ and I am crying/ all beauty around me/ and I am screaming/ I'm the last of the great whales/ and I am dying// He sang it in the morning,making me cry on my cornflakes. Anyone who could help?! |

I think it is the one about a soldier who deserted in mid campaign, due to concientious objections. The title of the song is the name of the soldier, but as I'm supposed to be up a step ladder painting the window frame at the moment, I can't help you. I'll see what I can find when I get down..... Went AWOL during the Gulf War, returned to his unit at the end of the conflict. Gaoled in a classic British miscarriage of justice (apart from anything else the conflict was unlawful, since the UN was acting in clear violation of its own charter). And as I recall there was a further furore when Amnesty International adopted him as a Prisoner of Conscience. Bailey recorded it on the wonderful (if somewhat uneven) Band of Hope CD "Rythm and Reds", which I think is still available. (Band of Hope were Bailey, Carthy, Swarbrick, Kirkpatrick and Stephan Hannigan). And it IS by Robb Johnson, who's nowhere near as well known as a song writer as he deserves to be. The CD sleeve has the words but no notes . . were you actually asking for the lyrics; if so I'll try to bring them in tomorrow. G. |

It does set out to be a "political" album. Martin Carthy is also overtly radical/socialist; Kirkpatrick and Swarb seem less overtly so. I think Suzanne may already have the lyrics of "Vic Williams" on her web site . . but I've lost my link to it. I'll try to post the track listing. G. |
