Okay Roger.....There are two types of instruments using the name "Dulcimer"......The first is the Hammered Dulcimer CLICK HERE and SCROLL DOWN-Bottom Photo which is played by striking the strings with "hammers" which are small wooden mallets about 6-8 inches long. You can check out the other which is called a lap, mountain, or Appalachian dulcimer.....an entirely different instrument which is fretted and strummed......by CLICKING HERE.

I've seen one played before (long time ago)and never realised it until now.
