Thought for the Day - July 19,00

Looney Tunes from all over:

NBC-TV in the U.S. is about to launch a new "reality" show called "Chains of Love" (already a hit in the Netherlands). In this series, a woman chooses 4 men from a pool of 100 prospects, and is then chained to them by her wrists and ankles for a week, while she eliminates them one by one in her search for Mr. Right (or Mr. Left). Asked about this concept yesterday at a press conference, the President of entertainment for NBC said: "It's a relationship show." (from New York Times, Associated Press, etc.)

Funny, if this were to happen in Iran, we would be shocked or outraged. I for one intend to boycott any sponsors of the show and let them know it.

It's a wild, wacky world we live in, isn't it?

It used to bug me that I never quite fit in. Now I'm like a kid who looks at his family and secretly hopes he was adopted. Maybe I was left here by aliens as part of my education. If so, come get me, I've seen more than enough.

I love the direction that the TV networks are going. Leaves me a lot more time for music 'n' Mudcattin'.

All the best,

Just off the phone with my mother -- her response: how about if the woman was chained to the stove, the washing machine, the refrigerator, and the toilet brush? How's that for "reality based"? Thanks, mom!

yours, Peter T.

Undoubtedly another inspired hit. The "vast wasteland" is getting vaster ever faster.

Smart Mom, there, Peter, but I think we already knew that...based on her smart son!

What a bunch of idiotic shite! It worries me, Mick, yeah it gives us more time for music, etc., but in the meantime most of the country is digging this pablum and rotting their brains, eh? Is it time for us to start plotting our takeover?

More idiocy heard on NPR the other day:

100 million gallons of water for each of 100 golf courses are being pumped directly from the Colorado River every day in Palm Springs, CA to keep them green and fit for televised matches.

In Columbia, kidnapping is a cottage industry. People are routinely taken, either by rebels looking for funding or those masquerading as rebels looking for a quick buck. They usually don't even contatc the families until at least 6 months have gone by, then families wind up selling everything they own to ransom their loved one home.

It has spawned a new radio format: everyday people line up at the radio stations to record their greetings to their loved ones. The rules are 1) no bad mouthing the government, 2) no bad mouthing the kidnappers, and 3) be cheerful. The story was so well done and heartwrenching. All of them plan to be cheerful, then breakdown, then the engineer patiently rewinds the tape and waits for them to do it over. Now, the radio shows have set schedules of broadcasts and everyone knows the kidnappers let their charges listen. Talk about coping.

It makes me ashamed of the bs Peter has brought to our attention...what a world....

This is truly a horrible trend. Survivor, Big Brother, I want to be a millionaire. Did anyone hear the NPR commentary that poked fun at these shows. The guy was talking about a new show idea. Something like four guys in a room with a big bag of money and knives. He came up with all manner of funny spinoffs. Really quite funny. But the reality isn't. It's hard to believe that there are people out there watching these shows. I'm not an anti-TV snob but I have many other things I'd rather be doing. I feel sorry for the folks that don't.

SINSULL, how do you find out what companies are the sponsors of particular shows? Boycotting sounds like a great idea if I knew who to boycott. Then again, I'm not much of a consumer and don't buy much that's advertised on TV anyway.

Kat, keep us posted about a takeover and count me in.

Emily

*smile*, I will keep you in mind, Emilyb, for a very important position....thanks!

This will take you to a page which has all of the main contact names for the high mucky-mucks in the NBC distribution pipeline, i.e. the folks who send out this kind of crap to stations and cable companies for airing. They seem pretty canny about not having any email addys, but at least there are names and fax numbers, so have at 'em! If I can find more about sponsors I will post it.

Yeah, I'm still hopping mad at NBC for cancelling The Pretender!!! One of the last good shows on TV these days. Curse them! --Mbo

SPONSORS? Watch the intro to the first show. The prime sponsors will be loud and clear. You don't have to watch the show.

Yikes! This thread is definitely food for thought! What concerns me most is the kids..... Thinking adults are able to draw on their wisdom and experience to discern the difference between the stuff that's worthwhile and the stuff that's not. Kids are presented with this buffet of BS, and led to believe that this is how to live. sigh....bring back The Beav.....

So these four blokes are chained to this woman? All atbthe same time, I assume. I can't quite envisage the logistics of this. I mean does she have one on each limb or are they chained to each other? What about eating and crapping and so forth.

No, don't tell me. Mass audience TV is on its way out I think. This is another nail in the coffin.

I am very glad that I cancelled my cable service at the first of the year. What a way to start a new century.I have no TV reception at all so I read alot, play my guitar more, and, of course,Mudcat a bunch.

I agree with Kat about it being frightening to think of the millions of people who watch this crap and the children who grow up thinking that this is real life.

Mbo,who is she?
