Lyr Add: Plains of Waterloo

I have another version of "Plains of Waterloo", I couldn't find it in the database (I'm probably going to be proved wrong) but for what it's worth, here it is:

THE PLAINS OF WATERLOO

Oh Come all you loyal lovers of a high or low degree,
I hope you'll pay attention and listen, now, to me,
It's all about a young man, his story I'll tell to you,
How he fought in Spain and Portugal, and got slain at Waterloo.

Now this young man that I speak about is proper, tall and thin,
He's mild in his behaviour and complete in every limb,
His cheeks were like the roses are red, his eyes a lovely blue,
There's no one here that I would compare with my love at Waterloo.

Now, my love he is a soldier bold, with his knapsack and his gun,
When Ireland fell and traitors arose, his ramble they begun,
To Bonaparte he was faithful and he wore a soldier's blue,
'Tis little he thought it would be his lot, to be slain at Waterloo.

And when Boney's star was in the sky, my love he went away,
He told me that he loved me true, He'd marry me some day,
He stood up straight and his sword shone bright, with those timeless words so true,
But now he lies with sightless eyes on he plains of Waterloo.

And when Badajoz was taken and or leaders all were damned,
The fields around with carnage lay, to show how much we planned,
But we arose and we marched on to fight the fight anew,
And now we are a marching o'er fields of dead on the plains of Waterloo.

And it's many's the river I have crossed, 'though ankle deep in mud,
And it's many's the battle I have fought, 'though ankle deep in blood,
'Though hearth and home are calling me, I've left them all for you,
To see you fight for our land again on the plains of Waterloo.

And if I don't get my own true love, no man on earth I'll take,
O'er lonely roads and through shady groves, I'll wander for his sake,
O'er lonely roads and through shady groves, o'er hills and valleys too,
I'll wander for my own true love who died at Waterloo.

I've cut and pasted this from HTML in "Word", so I don't know if it keep its layout (if not, then my apologies to all)

The song comes (if I recall) Pete & Chris Coe in the early 70s.

Good luck

Walrus, there is a GREAT performance of this song on N. California singer Sylvia Herald's CD "A Bowl Of Tears." It'll certainly produce a bowl of tears from the listener. Well worth the effort in finding it.

Looks great. Any chance of an ABC of the tune?

Anglo, I'm sorry, but, unfortunately, I can't "read the dots" and I don't know how to produce an ABC of the tune.

sorry,

Walrus

The "Plains of Waterloo" on Sylvia Herold's CD is not this one although it's safe to say that usually everything Sylvia does is pretty wonderful. Her second solo CD is just about to be issued - I've already reserved my copy!

Walrus,

If you can get a copy of the music to me I'd be happy to ABC it. Send me a PM and we'll figure out the details.

I got a version of this, but (in my usual fashion) I changed it to be a different song...
It now has a definitely "Irish guy fighting for Napoleon" air about it.... I'm a Scot living in Edinburgh, it was just a feeling when I saw the lyrics, I have no axe to grind on the Irish thingy.
I show it below for your opinions.

THE PLAINS OF WATERLOO

Oh Come all you loyal Irishmen whatever your degree,
I hope you'll pay attention, and listen, now, to me,
I'll tell you o' an patriot; loyal, proud and true,
How he fought in Spain and Portugal, and got slain at Waterloo.

Now the young man that I speak about was proper, tall and thin,
He was mild in his behaviour; complete in every limb,
His cheeks were like the roses red, his eyes a lovely hue,
There's no one here that would compare with my love at Waterloo.

Now, my love he was a soldier bold, wi' his shako and his gun,
When Ireland fell and traitors rose, his ramble he begun,
He was faithful to Napoleon, and he wore a coat of blue,
He never thought it'd be his lot, to be slain at Waterloo.

When Boney's star was in the sky, my love he marched away,
He told me that he loved me true; would marry me some day,
He said that he'd return to me, whatever would ensue,
But now he lies with sightless eyes on he plains of Waterloo.

When the Irish cause was over and the leaders captured all,
My love he swore he wasn't done, took his musket from the wall,
He donned his coat and marched away to fight the fight anew,
And now he's bled in fields of dead, on the plains of Waterloo.

Many's the river he had crossed, 'though ankle deep in mud,
An' many's the battle he had fought, 'though shin-bone deep in blood,
He fought for France and Bonaparte, to the end his cause was true.
He fought and died for Irish pride on the plains of Waterloo.

Wi' my true love gone across the waves, no other man I'll take,
O'er lonely roads and through shady groves, I'll wander for his sake,
I'll sing of a young Irishman, who was Irish through and through
I'll tell everyone of my Irishman, who died at Waterloo.

No man can ever take his place, no man will ever try
Though far from his dear homeland, for Ireland he did die.
He held inside a heart o' green, but wore a coat of blue,
And his Irish blood runs in the mud, on the plains of Waterloo.
