New Session for Dallas/Ft Worth Folks

From: JedMarum

I expect this to be a short lived thread, but I know there are a few Mudcatters out there wanting to know about good sessions in the area. I attended a session last night at The Bull and Bush (2300 Montgomery in Fort Worth - 817 731 9206). The sessionis less then a month old, from what I can tell, and is an open format of Celtic 'sing songs' (as they call it) Jigs and Reels, and eventually just about anything. It is run by a pair of brothers and their friends, good players, knowledgable, fun loving and very freindly. The pub has a pretty loyal following of mixed ages from the area University (TCU) crowd - and the crowd gets involved, singing, listening, dancing ... great folks, great craic ... Those of you in the area looking for a good session need to check it out. They start about 8PM and a good group was still going when I left at midnight.

I work pretty often on Wed, so won't be able to make it a regular night, but I hope y'all check it out (and if ya do, let me know, maybe I can adjust my schedule).

Great place!!

Thanks, Jed! This is great news for the DFW area. And I might even be able to get over to this session some time. I'd like some more information about what was sung and played at the session, though. I'll send you a PM.

Dang - I live about 2 miles from the Bull and Bush and I just sat home last night and watched a movie. Jed - you better let me know the next time you're there or you won't get the free Guinness { or whatever } I'm now offering. Are any of these brothers from Eammons Kitchen or Brothers Three?? Keep us informed.

PS - You might want to circle your calender for Friday Sept 22. My group gets to do a short opening set for Livingston Taylor here in Ft Worth.

Addr and phone no are in the orignial thread. Please come on out!

I should be able to make it. But it will have to be on the early side. My wife won't be there - second hand smoke isn't the best thing for a pregnant woman. I'll be the chubby guy with glasses and a pony tail. Looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this week (dang, dang, and double dang!). I'm looking forward to hearing all about it tomorrow, though, so everybody take copious notes! ;-) And if somebody can remember to bring along a camera, we could even put the Yee-haw Texas Mudcatter faces in the special events section on the Mudcat Resources page. So y'all remember to wear your Stetsons, snakeskin boots and armadillo t-shirts, OK?

bert - I was going to talk to the folks at the session about calling in to the radio show (like we did for a while from the Quill). But tonight they start at 7;30, and in Celtic time that means 8 or 8:30 and that's also Central time zone. So in short, I'd have to convince the session folks to get there pretty early. Still I intended to float the idea tonight, and see if we could get a quorum together for two weeks from tonight. Wadda ya think? Maybe then we could get Aine to show!!!

Just a quick update on the evenig's hap'nin's - we did have a "Mudcatter event" at Ye Old Bull and Bush (no relation to the Georges, I assure you) in Fort Worth last night. Wesley S and Mimosa joined Guinness Chick (frequent Mudcat visitor, rare poster) and me at the pub's session. We will have photos available very soon.

The session was a bit off last night, a bit loud, a bit unfocused at times - but it was fun never-the-less. Wesley brought along his exquistite mandolin (I forgot the maker's name, sorry) and Mimos brought his unusually shaped, lovely sounding 20 string harp. Both played along on whatever tune was called, and both added quite a bit to the musicianship. Mimosa led some beautiful renditions of Black is the Color, Danny Boy, and others. He is a truly well trained, gifted singer and harpist.

We need you Áine and Branwen23 - two weeks from lst night, we'll try again. If we can figure out how to get there at 6:30, we can plan a call into Mudcat Radio. One of these Weds, we need to get us all there at once!

Any more, I'll get pics posted ASAP, and send some into the Mudcat Resource page.

I had a great time last night as well. It was the first Irish session I've had a chance to sit it on so I was not sure what to expect but it looked like everyone had a good time. I was a bit concerned that there would be a lot of very trad minded folks there and that my chops wouldn't be up to the task as I'm still rather new to the mandolin. I learned a lot - it was good for me. Next time I'll be prepared with a couple of songs. Mimosa was indead a pleasure to hear - quite a talent with a great voice. I hope we all get together again.

By the way my mandolin is from Weber - the Bridger model. It's made by the same folks who used to make Flatiron mandolins in Montana. And whoever it was that bought a round of drinks for the musicians - thanks a lot. Jed - I'll PM you with a couple of ideas today or tomorrow. It's been a zoo today at work or I would have posted sooner.

Thanks for posting the mandolin info, Wesley. That was a fine instrument and I look forward to hearing moe of you playing it! Likewise for Mimosa and his harp.

Last night was a bit looser then the last one I went to ... I like a loose crowd, but I like to see the music flow PDQ with little breathing room in between! But we're new at it ... so it'll take time to adjust. We need to figure out how to get in early and catch Bert, Max and MaryMac on Mudcat radio.

See you soon - and be sure to keep me informed about your upcoming show with Liv Taylor. I'd love to be there,a nd want to be sure to keep my calendar clear, if possible.

I left that part out of the PM I sent you but I know it will be on Friday Sept 22nd in downtown Ft Worth. I think the tickets will be about $15.00. You'll need to bring a copy of a tape that we can give to the promoter of this show so he'll hire you sometime. I was checking some old posts and found out that Mimosa has his own CD out ! We'll need to twist his arm to bring some to the next session. Take care - Wesley Smith

I'm so glad that some of you were able to get together and it sounds like everyone had a great time. Can't wait to hear more 'Texas session' stories. But, to tell y'all the truth, all this sounds way over my head -- too professional, if ya know what I mean. I think I'll be content with just hearing about it. Wouldn't want to be the bump on the session 'log' so to speak.

Aine...

I know what you mean about it sounding too professional... I was invited to a "every other wednesday" session at the Barnes and Noble in Arlington once... I thought it sounded weird to begin with, having it in a bookstore and all, but I showed up anyway... My fears were realized... A bunch of people I didn't know, and these people showed up with music stands and sheet music... I was completely out of my element.
Somehow, though, I don't see that happening so much with this crowd... I do feel a little of your nervousness, though. I think I'll try to show up at least once just to see how it goes.
I'm sure everyone would love it if you came, alos. I know I would.

... by the way, this is not a professional environment by any stretch! It is a loosely organized fun atmosphere ... there are a ot of folks just sitting in, some sing, some just listen, some play, some play sometimes .... very few know the songs the song leader is playing ... it is a fun crowd - NOT a professional crowd. I promise you anyone will feel welcome, even just to sit and listen.

But seeing's how Jed says that "kazoos, singers, pickers, grinners, listeners, drinkers, (and) tea-totalers" are welcome -- well, I guess I just have to show up with my kazoo and potato whistle, don't ya know! ;-) And I have to see LEJ and get one of Mimosa's CDs, too.

If Branwen promises to keep me company in the corner (ha!), I'll do my best to be there on the 23th. And Jed, I want to hear your 'under the shady tree with the Whippets' song, OK?

Aine and Branwen23 - Let me echo what Jed said that this is a loose comfortable session. I was really worried that it was going to be run by a bunch of trad experts and that there would be a lot of rules ect. It was not that at all. No one will force you to get up and sing. If you just want to sit over in the corner, play chess and sing along on the occasional chorus you'll fit in also. It was a no pressure atmosphere. And besides you already know some of the folks that will be there. You just haven't met them yet. Hope to see you there.

Lonesome EJ - I'm very local to the Bull and Bush. Feel free to PM me at wsmith@lokeyiron.com. I'll be able to give you directions if you let me know where you're staying. Or perhaps pick you up if you don't have a car. I could get you there but I'll be leaving early. Let me know.

Well, I hope someone with better directions will jump in and correct me if I give you the long way to go, BUT; it seems simple enough to me. You take 360 to I30 (right near 6 Flags) and turn West on 30. Go through Fort Worth (there's a bit on construction there) and shortly after you go through town there is an exit for the University, and at the same exit there is one for Montgomery. Take the Montgomery exit, turn right (North) on Montgomery and YOBB is two block or so on your left. There's parking available along the street behind it or in the empty parking lots of the daytime businesses surrounding it. It's easy to find!

I hope we'll see you there!

Wed August 23 - 7:30 PM at Ye Old Bull and Bush ... we need all Mudcatters in the area to attend! We won't make ya sing or play or dance - but I suspect you'll want to some of one of those. I'll buy a guinness (or drink of your choice) for every Mudcatter who shows up!

And - at 7:50 we could call in to Mudcat radio and say hello to Max, Bert and MaryMac. Maybe even sing 'em a song, (if they let us). Wadda ya think?

YO! We had a Mudcat gatherinG!!

Cool stuff. We had, in order of arrival time:

WesleyS Jed Guinnesschik Mimosa Branwen Lonesome EJ and Mrs LEJ (sorry didn't catch her Mudcat name)

And we had a bit of fun! Thanks LEJ and Mrs LEJ for making the effort to get away from your conference. I know we all enjoyed meeting you! I hope the rest of your DFW trip goes well!

Wesley we still need to get you leading a song one o' these days, but enjoyed the mandolin! Maybe we need to get started earlier, too!

Mimosa - once again; beautiful harp and singing! Sorry about all those odd key choices our guitar players make at the drop of a capo - but you seem to manage OK anyway!

Branwen, what a treat! Where've you been hiding? Great voice, wonderful heart and enthusiasm, cute as hell, and just great fun to be around. You need to be at all DFW Mudcat and YOBB gatherings!

And Guinnesschic, my old friend and music partner; as always fine job! Still can't tell where the Celtic ends and the Bluegrass starts - but we'll have to keep experimenting. Maybe we'll figure it out! Now if we could just get the time between tunes down to less then 20 seconds we'd be doin' allright!

Sorry no pics, last night. I grabbed my camera on the way out the door only to find it was broken. Sorry - we'll have to try agian next time (two weeks). Hope to see y'all there!

I'd like to echo all the things that Jed had to say. Branwen has a great voice. She's a ittle to shy with it - we all hope to hear more of it in the future. And it was a real treat to meet Mr and Mrs Lonesome EJ. It's so nice to be able to put faces with these "voices" we read on the Mudcat. Thanks to everyone who attended. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I consider the jam sessions the best free therapy in the universe. We may have to move it to a bigger place! (Nick: hint, hint.) It's truly a pleasure to get to meet the mudcatters face-to-face. Thanks to all the Texas Mudcatters for making us feel at home at Ye Olde Bull and Bush. It was standing room only at Nick's place, which resembles a small British Pub,and Nick your host originally hails from Nottingham. It was great to walk in the door and see a big round wooden table surrounded by folks drinking beer and playing instruments- closest thing to the Brazen Head in Dublin I've come to lately. Music ranged from some beautiful Irish tunes performed solo by Mimosa on his lap harp,to Jed's Civil War songs, and the whole crowd chiming in on House of the Rising Sun. Thanks also to Jed for his CD,which Lynne and I are enjoying very much. I encourage ALL mudcatters to contact Jed for a copy; you will not be sorry.

BTW -- If you all could put the word out that the Gaelic League is looking for a ceili band for our annual Irish language immersion weekend in January, I'd appreciate it. It would be a one night gig on a Saturday night; but the band is always welcome for the weekend and to attend the language and culture classes. Let me know by email (doireanne@yahoo.com) or personal message if you hear anything, and I'll provide further details to any interested parties. I'm not sure of the date yet, but I should know in the next day or two. And if any of you want to come, that'd be lovely, too!

Fortunato:

Where in Arlington? From I-30, go West (young man. sorry, couldn't resist) into Fort Worth. There's quite a bit of construction, but just stay on I-30. The signs are all highly visible. Pass downtown, and take the Montgomery St Exit to the right. You'll be headin' in a Northerly direction. Go about 4 or 5 blocks, and Ye Olde Bull And Bush is on the left side of the street, by the Vending Nut Company, directly across from the Fort Worth Credit Union.

Hope to see ya' there!

06 Sep 00 - 02:41 PM (#292253)

Wesley S. Generally I play Old Timey or Early Country and Country Blues. But depending on the audience or the company I'm keeping I slip easily into Jump Blues, Swing, and Rockabilly. I'll sing a Hank Williams or a Jimmie Rodgers tune if given half a chance. I don't presume to emulate him, but I seem to collect the same kind of tunes Doc Watson prefers, or Norman Blake maybe.

How about you?

Fortunato - So what am I into?? My idea of Heaven would be a big front porch that I could steal licks all day from Mississippi John Hurt, Doc Watson and Norman Blake. And Pete and Mike Seeger would drop by every so often to share some songs. Then at night there would be a big Ceili somewhere where I would be able to play my mandolin and bouzouki as well as Andy Irvine.

By the way across from the Ballpark where you'll be staying is a "Guitar Center". Not the best selection of guitars in the world but you'll be able to pick a little while you're there. Mostly Martins, Taylors, Gibsons, Guilds, and some good Larrivee's.

Well, Branwen, I can't imagine that Fortunato would complain about havin' you all to himself!! And I'm gald ya had a good time ... 'cause if the truth be told whilst y'all were partying I was havin' the nightmare from hell tryin' to find ya!!!

I sometimes find my own stupidity hard to bear! I got the directions from above, crossed checked the tel no and the addr with the Excite driving directions, left a few minutes early, so I'd have time to reslove any 'wrong turn' issues and still get there in time. And sure enough, at 7:20 I arrived at the destination my directions sent me to ... trouble is is wasn't the right place!! Not to worry, I had time, and the tel no .... so I drove a few ever enlarging circles, still never found the place ... so at 7:30 I called ... gotta machine ... dove a bit more ... called again, got a fax-machine ... drove a bit more ... called again, spoke to a mna who seemed to know where I was, gave me a few pointers, but my cell phone cut out ... still I had enough to try again ... drove around and around and around ... ran outta gas, filled her up, called again ... got cut off again ... called Sprint and cancelled my service on the spot ... drove home!

I was hovering in the neighborhood for almost 90 minutes ... I decided the gods of fortune had a better plan for me, elsewhere!! ;-)

Sorry y'all. I really was lookin' forward to Matt's show, and meeting Fortunato, and all. Chuckle ... what a trip!

That's okay Jed... truth be told, I was starting to worry about you. I didn't even try to follow the directions on Excite.... when I asked it for driving directions instead of a map, it told me that the starting and ending addresses I'd entered did not exist. So I just called the number that Mimosa gave and got directions.

Mimosa's show was great, beautiful harp and singing. He has such a great voice, and a great sense of humor. We were only able tostay for the first half, since neither Fortunato nor I had any idea of how to get to YOBB from Harps of Avalon, so Wesley led us out, and he had to go after the first half. But what I saw was wonderful; wish I could have stayed for the rest.

At any rate, I'm glad to hear that you just had bad directions, Jed, and that you're safe and sound. We began to worry about you when ten-thirty rolled around and you still hadn't shown up at YOBB....

It was a quiet evening, Nick told us he didn't mind if we did a few tunes a capella, which we managed to do. Many thanks to Nick for his patience with us on an off week. He had no idea that anyone was planning on coming this week, and was very kind and accomodating.

It was a good time, and we'll hope that when Fortunato comes back this way, he'll happen to be here on the right week for an all out jam session.

I'll definitely see you all next week, though I may be arriving rather late... have to work late.

See you!

I am very sorry to say, y'all that I will not be able to make the session tonight. In fact, none of the Eammons Kitchen folks will be ble to make it out.

We've had a very busy schedule of late, and we just cannot manage the jam tonight. I hate to miss, but I know y'all will have a hell of a time anyway and we'll be back at the next one.

... and remember, the bar staff says only twice for Roddy Mc Corely!

....I feel so un-loved....

Well, we'll hope to see you back again at the next one, and be ready to play hard!

You're loved, Branwen, we're just stretched a little thin, these days. We'll be back. It's important to us! Please do pass on our apologies to all.

I won't be able to make it either. We have a big show this Friday night opening for Livingston Taylor { shameless plug } that I need to prepare for. If the bouzouki player shows up please make him feel welcome and tell him I'll see him there the next time. Take care.

Wesley - can you please post the facts about the Liv Taylor show. I am sure some of us would like to make it, if possible.

I was thinking of staying home tonight, but I guess I can put in a little time there. I'm as worried about keeping myself out of trouble as I am about Branwen. I'll miss you folks.

Jed, did I do something to offend you? Are you avoiding me? (G)

The Livingston Taylor concert is this Friday night the 22nd. The doors open at 6:30 and it's general admission. Tickets are $15.00 through the church at 817-336-7277. The location is First United Methodist Church of Ft Worth located at 800 West 5th St in downtown Ft Worth. It's at the corner of Henderson and 5th Street. The fact that the concert is being held in Wesley Hall is strictly a coincidence. Our group The Crossroad Singers will open the show. Another singer will follow and then Livingston Taylor will perform.

Jed if you make it to the show please bring a CD and I'll make sure the promoter gets a copy. He's looking for local acts to open shows and he has some good ones coming up. If other Mudcatters need any more details feel free to PM me.

Wesley - I presume you can tix at the door? Did they recently rename the hall, in honor, perhaps, of the twins' Dad?

If my wife and I can make it, I will bring a CD. Thanks!

Yes you can get tickets at the door but I think they're 3 bucks extra. I'm not sure if you can reserve them at the lower price if you call early but I think you can get them held at a "will call".

Wesley Hall is named after the founder of Methodism John Wesley. When I first started attending there I thought it was odd that everyone remembered my name so well.

Jed, I get tickled every time I look at the first post on this thread and see "I expect this to be a short lived thread..."

We had a really nice time last evening, and Branwen got to sing lots and sight read in public. Pretty impressive. I did miss the rest of the 'Catters, though.

Does anyone know how to do a blue clicky and start a new thread? This one's getting kind of long.

Mimosa
