Do you know how many times I heard someone sing this? Countless times! Ever since I was a kid. But.. nobody ever got beyond the first "Oh, the cow kicked Nellie in the Belly in the Barn".... is there more to this song?

Hi, Sarah - if you put cow belly in the blue search box on this page, the song will come up. "Nellie" might be spelled two ways, so that's not a good word to put in the box unless you want to try searching twice. Otherwise, Click here. But it looks like you have 3/4 of the song, all but the "doctor" line.

I remember singing this round the campfire when I was in scouting. All I can recall is

Oh the cow kicked Nellie
In the Belly in the barn
And the doctor said
It would do her no harm
So he sent her off to bed
With a poultice on her head
Her face turned blue
And her belly turned red

I'm sure there must be more.

Gee, this link says that Al Bundy sang this song on one episode. In fact, the link apparently lists all the songs the Bundys sang. My, the things a person can learn on the Internet!

Any relation to "Who hit Annie in the fanny with a flounder" or "Who put the overalls in Mrs. Murphy's Chowder?" Or, for that matter, "Who Put the Benzedrine in Mrs. Murphy's Ovaltine?"

RATS! I always thought it was

Who hit Nellie in the bellie with a flounder.

Must be the seafairin version of the same song.

My older brothers sang this little ditty when I was a child in the 1940's. Does anyone know any more than the single verse listed in the Mudcat lyrics file? I suspect there are some off-colour verses. The verse listed is "Oh, the cow kicked Nellie in the bellie in the barn" (repeat three times). The fourth line is " And the doctor said it would do no harm". The tune is "Turkey in the Straw". Thanks, GeneJ

Another version:

The cow kicked Nellie in the belly in the barn.
Didn't do her any good, didn't do her any harm.

Stop there.

Thanks all. I found the thread you mentioned and the Bundy reference. Looks like there aren't any more than one or two verses. GeneJ

We used to sing a verse of " the cow kicked Daddy in the (male anatomy parts) in the barn...poor old mama she don't give a darn. the song was "Let her go, let her go" and is similar to the Irish Descendants-"Uncle Dan". Confusing,no?

We heard a much different version years ago: "who hit nellie in the bellie with a shovel" Sounds funny and no one in the family knows any more words to the song!

My 88 year old dad, remembered this verse tonight. He said he recalled it 50 years ago. His version is.

the cow kicked nellie in the bellie by the barn
but her old man said wouldn't do her any harm.

An innocent version in his day but maybe not a version that would be considered appropriate today;)

My Dad (1923-1995) used to sing
"O The cow kicked Nellie in the belly in the barn, the cow kicked nellie in the belly in the barn..." & continue:
"She died, she did. She died of a broken rib she did. She died, she did. She died of a broken rib!"   ...so I always thought it was all one song.

The cow kicked Fred in the head in the barn
The doctor said it would do him no harm
So we ALL kicked Fred in the head in the barn

Me old man used to sing it when I was a young fella. I can't remember it all."The cow kicked Nellie in belly in the barn and the doctor said it would do no harm. As she wiggled and squirmed as she wiggled and she squirmed as she rubbed her fanny on the old barn door. And the moonlight shown on the nipple of her tit as she rubbed her fanny in the Billy goat shit"

Well I'll tell you a story about a girl that I know
Sure I met her at a dance below in Ballinasloe
Well she was kind of cute but I was very shy
And sure every time she passed me by she gave me the glad eye.
Chorus
Oh a cow kicked Nellie in the belly in the barn
And Nelly said the cow didn't do one bit of harm
Well I'll give her a bottle and a bottle of the best
If she let me put me two arms right around her waist.

Sure I plucked up some courage and I asked her for a dance
And we danced all around the Ballroom Of Romance
She said her name was Nelly and she came from Ballinasloe
But she got a dreadful shock there many years ago.

Oh a cow kicked Nellie in the belly in the barn
And Nelly said the cow didn't do one bit of harm
Well I'll give her a bottle and a bottle of the best
If she let me put me two arms right around her waist.

Well Nellie said Moore you are very bold
But Nelly sure, I said, it's you I want to hold
So can I take you home in me auld Transit Van
Sure I'll put me arms around you and we'll have a bit of fun.
Repeat Chorus.
Well I took Nellie home in me auld Transit Van
And all along the road she held me by the hand
Then she took me to the barn where she got that dreadful shock
And we had a great auld craic until nearly six o'clock.
Repeat Chorus

I remember a (slightly) politer version from my schooldays:
"The cow kicked Mabel in the navel in the stable..."
Never could make out the rest unfortunately.

The cow kicked Nelly in the belly in the barn
The doctor said it wouldn't do her any harm
But the farmer said she'd be better off dead
So he took her in the barn and he shot her in the head

My mother used to sing "Oh the cow kicked Daddy ... " - but that was far as I ever heard her go. It was her mnemonic for the opening phrase of Miss MacLeod's Reel.
