Big Mick Plays D chord

Big Mick,

Rick Fielding mentioned that you've played a D chord.

If you can also get G and A7, you can play a three chord song. Best of luck.

Sure, and many's the time I've heard Mick play a D chord. He can do more with a D chord than you can do with that single brain cell you've been so dependent on for so many years. Why I've heard him wring tears of joy and plangent sweetness out of the simplest notes, and it is sweet of you to remind me of those days, gone for the moment, but to be returned to always in memory.yours, Peter T.

I KNEW there was a reason why the Lyndon LaRouche supporters pedding literature on card tables bothered me so much....What a perfect nom-de-plume for a troll of the scuzziest sort..*grin*

I'll second what Peter had to say about Big Mick's d-chord abilities. From the slow evocative softly-plucked D, to the plaintive, folksy trill of the D7, to the soul-wrenching sadness of Dminor, Mick has truly mastered the D in all of it's sparkling facets. While lesser musicians struggle from buzzing C's, to finger cramping F bar chords, and questionable Asus chords, Big Mick has shown that there is a world of magic and complexity hidden within that most versatile of all chords, the D.

bob, it still takes me 5.2 seconds to produce an Fbar, but I hope to have it down to three seconds by the end of the year. Calls for a lot of dramatic pauses in your music...

Ahhhh, Lyndon ole boy, nice to hear from you. One would think that with all the practice available to you in the joint, you would have the plethora of D formations down as well. But there is no accounting for the cruelties of genetics. Keep at it old sock, and I am sure something good will happen in your life. Ever thought of taking up egg shakers, or rhythm sticks??? Now, LEJ, about that F?

Ahhh Mick...........Ya' see, this is all Brother Fielding's fault. In trying to explain about cliques/clacques/clunques an the like, he used an example of ludicrous thread titles.....Kendall has Piles, this one, and something about Rick Plays in Elk's Crotch. Lyndon has plenty of time as you say and decided they would make wonderful threads. To some degree, he's right!

So how is your bar F? Mine sucks.

Hell, 'Spaw, I can barely play the D and you want to start talking Barre F? I just make it in the trad way, but am up to suggestions. Let's hijack this thread and turn it legit. Are you talking about a barreing the second fret and playing aED shape? Pretty tough. Describe what you mean by a barre F.

Mine rules. Practise makes perfect. Or close enough to perfect, anyway.

Yeah Meebs, practice is great and if you've been practicing something wrong for 30 years, you acquire a "perfection" of sorts with that too.......sadly enough.

Yeah, Mick, the classic 1st barre E, but the master (and he really is) Mister Fielding will tell you that the thumb over on 5 & 6 at the first is the best. In truth I've been trying for years to work my thumb in after seeing everybody do it and skipping the whole classical method that I read about 30 years ago, ie. NEVER use your thumb, stays below the neck, etc.

Now I gotta' tell ya', there is no way in hell that my thumb is long enough to do this properly and my hand just doesn't want to bend that way. Add this to the fact that I'm incredibly lazy and you can see my problem. I would say that about half the time I get the thumb into play and the rest is 4 or 5 string F's with some other finger gymnastics to try and cover the fact that I'm basically lousy. This gets me by and not being or having aspirations of being a pro (because I sing lousy too), gets me by most times and I still have a lot of fun!!!

But Meebo and Rick are certainly right and as you well know, Brother Rick is a PICKER (so's Meebs if you haven't heard him)....and I truly admire his ability and hard work. I admire him more as a friend though, just as you do.

BTW......I always get this BIG charge out of watching Ritchie Havens. The man has the LONGEST thumbs I've ever seen!!!! My thumbs are so short that even if I try to do what he does, my thumb won't cover the fretboard! I think he could wrap his around it!

That thumb over the top to the F# is a killer. Cannot do it, been working on it, cannot do it.
