29 Jul 00 - 12:00 AM (#267067) Subject: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Little Hawk Hi fellow Mudcatters! This is Little Hawk, back from an utterly wonderful week in Cuba, visiting the Fuerte Centre of the United Church in Cardenas, Matanzas, Cuba. I went down with the most open-minded minister probably in the whole world, a prince of a man called Paul Browning, and a couple of other adults and 10 young people from the High Schools in my town of Orillia, Ontario. I now have many good friends in Cuba, including some fine young musicians, guitar players and singers. I got to sing "No Nos Moveran" on numerous occasions, plus my own songs, Bob Dylan, etc. Also did a fine song by Tish Hinojosa called "Baby Believe" which has both Spanish and English lyrics. Check out the Tish Hinojosa album "Destiny's Gate" for this song. Tish really is a folksinger, and a very fine one. She's a wonderful songwriter in both Spanish and English, many beautiful songs with great lyrics. "Destiny's Gate" is a masterpiece of an album. Further to that, Cuba is a very inspiring place. I would live there anytime, without hesitation. I have never been happier or met finer people. You may recall I was looking for the Spanish words to No Nos Moveran last time I was on Mudcat. Well, it turns out that they are on the lyric sheet of the Joan Baez album "Gracias A La Vide" (Here's To Life), released in 1974 on A & M Records. I found a copy of the old vinyl album among my records...still in good shape. The title song, "Gracias A La Vida" is a particularly beautiful tune, written by Violeta Parra. I think she's from Spain, but I'm not quite sure... There's very little money in Cuba, but SO MUCH HEART. Funny how it seems to go that way....North Americans are misled by all their money and posessions and they have to some extent forgotten what life is really about. The Cubans do not have this problem. They are very passionate people. How is Moonchild doing? It is "Moonchild" right? I'm trying to remember... At any rate, I just wanted to say hello, since I am back, and I have to get some sleep now, but I'll check out this string tomorrow, and maybe see what you people have to say. Okay? Best wishes, Little Hawk (George Coventry) |

From: Little Hawk Flattop, you inane, witless, boob...what the hell are you doing revitalizing this totally out of date (if still intriguing) thread from way back in July 2000??? I know. Probably siezing the opportunity to point out that it only got ONE response (from Katlaughing) at the time....right? Trying to humiliate me in front of all of Mudcat, eh? You, sir, are a moronic and convoluted twit with delusions of lucidity. You couldn't present a convincing argument if your virginity depended upon it. As for your reputation, it is like your moral turpitude...beyond redemption. I hear that your own brother tried to deny having sired you. I hear that your home province tried to deny you a birth certificate (out of shame). I hear that dogs cross the street to avoid you, and that flocks of hideous carrion birds trail you wherever you go, screeching dolorously. So, can I expect to see you this weekend at my gig at Holy Joe's? The show starts around 9:30 pm, and features me, Clayton Denwood (a Toronto singer-songwriter), and Like Water (which is a duo consisting of Jennifer Claveau and her boyfriend Eric...good friends of mine...they are the headliners). Holy Joe's is at the SE corner of Queen & Bathurst...through the bar and upstairs to the 3rd floor. :-) - LH |

08 Feb 01 - 08:30 PM (#393676) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Little Hawk Actually, you don't have to sneak them at all. There's a quota. You can bring back a certain number of large cigars, duty free, and a certain number of small ones. A couple of people did that, but I didn't. Some people get the REALLY expensive ones, and then sell them to people over Ebay, I hear. Interesting idea, that. I will have to think about it on the next trip there. - LH |

From: catspaw49 Hawk DID bring back a box of cigars once, but since he can't tell shit from Shinola, the cigars turned out to be dried dog crap. 08 Feb 01 - 10:39 PM (#393761) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: GUEST Little Hawk, I was pretty sure you had good taste in music the way you go on about Dylan but now that I know Tish Hinojosa gets high marks from you I am hear to say that here is a man who knows talent. She is marvelous. She has many loyal followers and packs a venue. Tish has a great voice; is a wonderful songwriter and a lovely woman. I have seen Tish on several appearances in the NYC area. I believe US citizens still have to travel to another country before they can enter Cuba, part of US/Cuban policy. As a Canadian, you wouldn't have had to do that. Am I correct? Ellen |
08 Feb 01 - 10:52 PM (#393771) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: mkebenn LH, I spent two glorious weeks in a rural village in Costa Rica in the early '80s, and I'll always remember sitting in the outdoor cafe in the middle of town doin' singarounds with the homefolk. I had enough Spanish to order beer, rum, gin, eggs and chicken, and they had less English, and it didn't matter. I heard some beautifull music, from haunting ballads to ass stompin salsa. Loved it. 09 Feb 01 - 10:46 AM (#394129) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Art Thieme 1962---my buddy & I were 20 & knocking around the U.S.----Somehow we got to Mexico City and met a fellow at the bull fights who had a few cervesas with us. A student and a radical in Mexico, he had ways that we could easily get to Cuba to help work in the cane fields and help out Castro at a time when U.S. policies were strangling the revolution even more than in recent times. I had just read "SARTRE ON CUBA" and realized for the very first time how the Mafia and Cuba's dictator had turned the entire island into an arsenal (= a mass of assholes) of degradation and prostitution that looted and raped the entire island. Castro responded with absolutely necessary revolutionary zeal. And it's a zeal that, in the light of all these intervening years of sanctions and outright U.S. opression towards Cuba, has forced Fidel and Cuba to hunker down defiantly ever since the Bay Of Pigs. Back then ('62) Jack Kennedy was in Mexico City when Mike and I were. I remember his huge photo up on the entire front of the National Lottery Building in Mexico City D.F. Well, the best made plans of mice and men...------Mike and I really thought seriously about getting to Cuba then. But I had eaten some food I shouldn't've. Worse than that, I drank the water and millions of marauding amoebas tore up my gut like a terrorist bomb outside a tied-up U.S. ship in Yemen. We never got to Cuba. And the 1200 mile trip back to El Paso on a greyhound type bus (sort of) with us and various livestock encased therein was a unique journey that was only good for conjuring up these memories to stick in this thread. One good thing though was that I got plenty exercise on that bus running back and forth the length of the vehicle from my seat to the foot wide lavatory. ----- Later, after going through Carlsbad Caverns and watching the millions of bats leave at night and then return to the big cave in the morning, all of my gut-felt problems ceased.---------------And that was good. 09 Feb 01 - 04:58 PM (#394482) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Little Hawk That is a great story, Art! Worth quite a few songs, I'd say. Spaw - you might be right that I don't know "shit from shinola"...cos I am not sure what "shinola" actually is. But I do know cigars. They smell great before you light them, they stink to high heaven after they've been lit. I think maybe Bill Clinton had the right idea, cos the worst thing you can do with a damned cigar is light the goddamn thing. Pee-yuuuu!!!! Same deal with pipe tobacco...it smells great till you light it up. Banjer - you have a sick, sick mind. Which explains what attracted you to Mudcat, I suppose... Hesperis - What in God's name were you doing up at 6:04 am this morning??? Or did you just never go to bed at all last night? GUESTS - Yeah, Tish is great! I'd love to see her live, and thanks for the tip about Violetta too. Viva la revolucion! - LH |

09 Feb 01 - 07:50 PM (#394632) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: catspaw49 And that's high praise coming from General Banj himself. He's 4 star rank you know? A General F****P of the first order and proud wearer of the Croix de Crappola, issued only for those who have shown willingness above and beyond their calling as an Incredible Dumbass. Hawk, this thread seems to be going a lot better the second time around and I feel you need to apologize to flattop......chuck the boy a few toenails or something. Banj, is that Lassie line used throughout the States in the automotive business? I think we have a few that seem to be known by all of us who ever spent their time getting greasy. (ie., French Jack--keeps going down on you). Spaw |
09 Feb 01 - 07:56 PM (#394637) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Little Hawk I think you're right, Spaw. 09 Feb 01 - 08:14 PM (#394646) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Peter K (Fionn) Don't know why the hell you did it flattop, but thanks, thanks, thanks, for giving me a second bite at the chery. Sorry I missed it first time round, Hawk. Cracking post, Art. Incidentally everyone I know who's actually spent time in Castro's Cuba has come back hugely impressed, notwithstanding some obvious shortcomings on human rights.I can't think of a single exception. Are there any Mudcatters who have been and who have come away with a different view? (I know it's not easy for Americans to get there.) |

09 Feb 01 - 08:30 PM (#394650) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: catspaw49 And again.......Mike brought it up, Fionn refers to it, and everyone here would agree..... ART!!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO WRITE A BOOK!!!!! We have so damn many folks around here with wonderful tales and stories being told here....but nowhere else. Read the Walt Robertson thread for example. Art, you walked the road, got the gravel in your shoes..........I don't want to tell you that you owe it, but like Sandy, you have a wealth of experience, great wit, and a lifetime that begs to be heard. You must consider it. There is plenty of help available for the grunt work. And like Sandy, you will have reasons for not doing this and both of you just piss me off....in the best possible way.(:<)) Think hard about it and let us get this one underway soon. Spaw |
09 Feb 01 - 09:46 PM (#394675) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Banjer Man, I can't even begin to thank all you kind folks for your wonderful praise, even though it IS well deserved. Yes I hold the honorable order of Incredible Dumbass, which I hold with great pride I may add. I have also worked long and hard for my subsequent promotion to (actually somewhat of a field commision) General F***K UP, with a medal for Incredible Dumbassedness with a four dingle berry cluster. Thanks to 'Spaw I have realized my goal in life. Now Little Hawk telling me I am a sick individual puts the icing on the cake!! Golly, I'm so excited I don't know if I'll be able to get to sleep tonight. You guys are the best!!!!! |
09 Feb 01 - 10:05 PM (#394686) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Little Hawk I am glad I can still spread a little happiness in this world, Banjer. It warms my heart. Since you've already made it to the rank of GENERAL F**KUP, I presume you have fulfilled the obligations of MAJOR DIS@STER to their completion. Well done! You, sir, are clearly an incompetent of the first water, an idiot par excellence, and we are proud to welcome you into our esteemed company. I think I can speak for EL SUPREMO, the GREAT ONE, none other than the idiot's idiot himself...the one and only * * * LEG OF THE CAT * * * ...in saying...FLA-A-A-A-A-A-R-R-R-R-R-A-A-A-F-F-F-F-T-T-T-T!!!! Oh, excuse me, it always happens when Spaw comes to mind... Anyway, consider yourself well in, one of the family, and all that... - LH Oh, flattop...I will advise Castro to keep a close eye on your comings and goings when I see him next. He detests sarcastic capitalist toenail fetishists. Watch out for swarthy men sporting bushy beards and smoking Havana cigars. They have ways of making you stop talking... :-)

09 Feb 01 - 10:15 PM (#394689) Subject: RE: Little Hawk is back from Cuba. Hola! From: Art Thieme I appreciate your words folks. Truth be told, I'm a "reactor" to situations. IT'S YOU FOLKS who set the table with some thread topic that just "takes me back" to stuff that'd never come up on it's own unless you hadn't stuck your finger down my throat. What comes out is sort of a regurgiresurrection-------that's a word I coined recently in the first poem I've written in 20 years. I sit down at this keyboard and just stare at it when left to my own devices. That's really true. I don't ever feel what I've got is worth anything much unless someone says sort of specifically that they want to hear a tangential fact or two as indicated by 'em in their thread. Until recently there weren't many things that got me goin'---but in the last week it must be the damn steroids I've been on for 2 weeks------but the doc is tapering me off those right now. You'll probably never hear from me again. ;-) Art |
