Rorrer noted that the song was written as a Broadway show tune in 1909 by Mat Marshall and Shelton Brooks. The original song had 5 verses, but Poole used only the last two. Poole's tune also differs somewhat from the original.
YOU AIN'T TALKIN' TO ME
I went up to a lady's house to bum a bite to eat.
CHORUS: You ain't talkin' to me. No, you ain't a-talkin' to me. (Repeat above chorus)
Now, me and my wife has ups and downs all through our married life.

The tune is totally different from what Charlie Poole sings. The lyrics from the sheet music are shown below: YOU AIN'T TALKING TO ME Words by Mat Marshall, music by Shelton Brooks, 1909.
1. We all remember childhood days and the good times that we had,
CHORUS: “You ain't talking to me; you ain't talking to me.
2. Now I was sick December last; I had fierce pains in my head.
CHORUS: “You ain't talking to me; you ain't talking to me.
3. I met a lady just last week, and her name was Lindy Lee.
CHORUS: “You ain't talking to me; you ain't talking to me.

It's a bit more than half Charlie Poole, the rest puts Poole in a context of his predecessors and those who carried on his music after him. Bob Dylan quotes the song in his Nobel Prize speech. |

06 Jun 17 - 11:50 PM (#3859336) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: You Ain't Talkin' to Me (Marshall/Brooks) From: GUEST,Gerry guestlev, here's an excerpt from Dylan's speech: Charlie Poole from North Carolina had a song that connected to all this. It's called "You Ain't Talkin' to Me," and the lyrics go like this: I saw a sign in a window walking up town one day. Join the army, see the world is what it had to say. You'll see exciting places with a jolly crew, You'll meet interesting people, and learn to kill them too. Oh you ain't talkin' to me, you ain't talking to me. I may be crazy and all that, but I got good sense you see. You ain't talkin' to me, you ain't talkin' to me. Killin' with a gun don't sound like fun. You ain't talkin' to me. Now, I have found various websites giving the lyrics of Poole's song, and they don't all give the same set of stanzas, but I don't think I found any that give this stanza. So maybe Dylan was confused, or maybe I just haven't found the right website, I don't know. |

Mudcat! Back in 2002, in a thread on Draft Dodging Songs, Jim Krause wrote, "Some verses I once penned to Charlie Poole's You Ain't Talkin' to Me" and there, lo and behold, are the verses Dylan included in his Nobel speech! So either Jim Krause was claiming to have written verses actually due to Poole, or else Dylan got fooled into thinking that Poole had sung the verses that were actually written many years later by Krause (I suppose there are other possibilities, but these seem the most likely). It would be hilarious if some original lyrics posted to Mudcat made their way, misattributed, into a Nobel Prize speech. The Mudcat thread is here: http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=54088 |

Do you know if these lyrics are actually written by Jim Krause. Is there any way to contact him? It would be really hilarious if Dylan took the lyrics from his speech on mudcat or on our website! |

19 Jun 17 - 06:08 PM (#3861804) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: You Ain't Talkin' to Me (Marshall/Brooks) From: GUEST,Lorenzo Masetti Dear Gerry, I would not be surprised if Dylan knew perfectly that the verses he was quoting are not by Charlie Poole but a parody. It's not the first time that Dylan misquotes on purpose. Do you remember his speech at the Grammy Awards in 1991? The quote that he attributed to his father was actually a commentary of Rabbi Shimshon Rafael Hirsch (the spiritual leader of traditional Jewry in Germany in the mid 19th century) to the Psalm 27 http://www.radiohazak.com/Dylgramm.html |
