06 Aug 00 - 12:37 AM (#272204) Subject: Walsh shuttlepipes advice From: Charcloth I am considering purchasing a set of Walsh Shuttle pipes. They have a set with 2 drones & a set with 3 drones. I am wanting to play along with a hammer dulcimer can any one give me some advice? And are there any considerations I should look at as well that I may not be aware of. Or would a set of small pipes be a better choice. I understand the shuttle pipes are tuned to A 440 is this an acurate statement? |

The man, Walsh, invented them so he could play the bagpipe indoors, or use them to practice indoors while retaining all the same actions of the great pipes. If Walsh is the fellow I think he is, they are made here in Nova Scotia. I have heard and seen them in action and they are really neat. I think, if I remember correctly, the shuttles do the work of the original drones, and somehow is quieter. Charclorth, I believe that you are right. There might be different tunings, just like with Hamish Moore pipes. e-mail me, and I will forward your interest on to a piper, Barry Shears, who knows a lot about pipes, and has written several books on the older form (non pipe band) of pipe playing. I believe he's interviewed the maker of the Shuttle Pipes. |
