Hound Dog Dobro

Anyone around here playing Dobro?

Anyone interested in a 1993 Hound Dog Dobro. I only purchased it about 4 months ago but I just bought a new instrument and need to help finance it. My new one is an R.J. Deneve squareneck reso. I'm in heaven -- at least until I see the VISA bill.

Hey Rick, I think I finally caught your disease.

Thanks Jason.

Nope Jason, you aren't TRULY diseased until you've got at least 30 instruments. Until then you can still kick the habit. Have you thought of tryin' the mudcat auction?

Rick

Never thought of the Mudcat auction. On second thought, never heard of it before. But I did just check it out. That'll be another option. Originally I was going to bring it back to the 12th Fret (so they could gain another consignment fee on the same instrument), but I might get a better deal if I sell it privately, or auction it off. Considering that I've never sold an instrument before, you're definitely more experienced than me. What would you do? Anyone else have ideas about selling instruments?

Anyway, what do you think of the instrument. Ever play one before. Four days ago I never knew an R.J. Deneve existed. But now I'm in love with it. Playing just one note gives me chills. I don't know that I've ever had that kind of reaction from an instrument before. And I don't think it's the kind of chill that comes from the excitement of playing a new instrument. I don't think this chill will wear off. I feel great!

Jason.

Jason, I've played a Hound Dog and it seemed to work just fine for me. It belonged to friend who let me borrow it to record with.

I haven't heard of this other maker R.J. Deneve but I'm glad there are those like him out there making instruments that thrill players.

There are a world of instruments out there to plunk on but to find one that strikes a chord in you is truly a unique and wonderful experience.

I'll keep an eye out for his work.

I did some research on RJ Deneve. I think some of his personality may come through in the instrument. He doesn't make them for a living. He has another career, and only makes Dobros because he loves to make them (about 14/year). And he doesn't charge as much as they're worth. I was told that the prices have been the same for years and that the instruments are as good as some private builders who sell them for 3 times the money. It's really nice to find a builder who gets so much pleasure from making an instrument and who isn't concerned about making a fortune from them. I think that's a good lesson for me -- and maybe a few other musician's out there:

Do what you love because you love to do it!

Jason.
