It's not printed in any book or ballad sheet that I know of and I've never heard it performed live or recorded. If you post all you have, including attempts, however lame they may seem, at the place names, and say where and from whom you have heard it and I'll try and track it down. |

I've managed to track the ballad down (all ten verses) but the place names in some of the verses are a little distorted on the tape I have managed to put together. It's has a strange and very abrupt ending to it which makes me think that it may yet be incomplete. I'll get back to you on it soon as I can as I have just today been put in contact with someone from Castlewellan who may be able to assist. Jackie |

Don't forget that because of the Dolly's Brae research I know a lot of the local place-names. Who did you get the song from then? For anyone who doesn't know Jackie, he is an excellent traditional singer from Comber County Down who makes his living making what are reputably the best obtainable bellows and bags for the various kinds of bagpipes. |

I have the words of an old poem somewhere about the Fiddler of Legananny. I went to see an ancient dolman there in 1998, The place probably got it's name from the dolman. "LIAGAN" = pillar of stone. Donegall would be a fair stretch of the legs so I would rule that out as well. Is it possible the place is Donaghadee with the pronounciation slurred as in Donaghdee?. The other places may be very small townlands. I have travelled extensively around the Co Down but none ring a bell. I will contact a brother in Newcastle, he may be able to help. The other explanation may be that it is not a Co Down song at all and may well be from another part of Ireland. I suppose there could be a Legananny or two somewhere else. ?. Slainte |

Slieveanisky is Slieveniskey about 4 km east of Legananny Slievenamanny is Slievenamoney about 2 km west and 4 south of Slievniskey. Cherryvaughan may be Clonvaraghan, which is in the same area but not very likely. I'm going to look at a larger scale map - 25 inches to the mile - this morning. |

Has the place-name survey for the area been published? The names already established are in three separate Parishes - Drumgooland, Aghaderg and Kilmegan - have you checked to see if there were Ordnance Survey Memoirs for those parishes? |

I have all the place names and parts of the song I thought I had right, I have had to change. I will fill in the incorrect and missing place names to complete the ballad.
