Can anyone assist, I most of have the lyrics but the place names I can't make out. I was wondering if any Mudcatters could help out.The ballad hails from County Down (Castlewellan) There are ten verses all together.

One evening fair to take the air,
I chanced to go a-straying 'o.
As o'er the dales from ---------(?)
With gentle breath displaying 'o.
With a lassie gay, I took my way,
And left me occuption 'o.
With beating heart, for to escort
Onto her destination 'o.

I don't know this song. It's not printed in any book or ballad sheet that I know of and I've never heard it performed live or recorded.

If you post all you have, including attempts, however lame they may seem, at the place names, and say where and from whom you have heard it and I'll try and track it down.

John I had mentioned this to you about six or seven months ago and you had informed me that you didn't have it. I've managed to track the ballad down (all ten verses) but the place names in some of the verses are a little distorted on the tape I have managed to put together. It's has a strange and very abrupt ending to it which makes me think that it may yet be incomplete. I'll get back to you on it soon as I can as I have just today been put in contact with someone from Castlewellan who may be able to assist. Jackie

Jackie Boyce,

If I'd known Jackie was you I'd have contacted you direct. Don't forget that because of the Dolly's Brae research I know a lot of the local place-names. Who did you get the song from then?

For anyone who doesn't know Jackie, he is an excellent traditional singer from Comber County Down who makes his living making what are reputably the best obtainable bellows and bags for the various kinds of bagpipes.

Hi, Jackie - Could you post everythinng you have for us? Just make sure to put a <br> line break at the end of every line so that the spacing comes out right. If you post the whole thing, we might learn something - and we might be better able to help you fit the pieces together.

can you make the place names out enough to write them phonetically and then we could have a guess at them.

I'm hoping to get some bagpipes when I'm home.... any chance of sending me a personal message or email with a phone number or address?

There is a place not far from Castlewellan called Legananny. I have the words of an old poem somewhere about the Fiddler of Legananny. I went to see an ancient dolman there in 1998, The place probably got it's name from the dolman. "LIAGAN" = pillar of stone.

Alison's suggestion about writing them out phonetically would certainly help .

Legananny'o

One evening fair to take the air,
I chanced to go a straying'o.
As o'er the dales from (DONE-GALE)?
With gentle breath displaying'o.
With a lassie gay, I took my way,
And left my occuption'o.
With beating heart, for to escort
Onto her destination'o.

So from the west to (BALLYSTRESS)?
The --------,(?) so pretty'o.
And lingering scenes as if the beams,
Were to adorn my Kittie'o.
In (CHERRYVAUGHAN)? we took the road,
Along to (SLIEVEANISKY)'o ?
Where nimble lambs around their dams,
Were sporting gay and frisky'o.

In scattered state, my sheep did bleat,
Depart from one another'o.
And fearing they might further stray,
We tied their legs together'o.
And they still ran, we then went on,
Our journey to (LYNNDENNY'o)? (or GLENDENNY'o)?
Til time passed bye,til we drew nigh,
To a place called Legananny'o.

The hawthorn gay beguiled the way,
The hare and rabbit sportin'o.
The feathery train sang o'er the plain,
(SO FAIR/PAIR)? were sweetly courtin'o.
While ways I viewed, I understood,
And thought of natures charms'o.
That maid more fair, than all was there,
The maiden in me arms'o.

Lord bless my luck, I envied not,
The King his wide dominions'o.
For time alas, ner moved so fast,
As when on pleasures pinions'o.
Like the sea-bird brave, a crest the wave,
(FOR GUARDIAN STOP THE PEOPLING'o)?
The illumineous lamp, that guides the tramp,
When all the world is sleeping'o.

So up I went, my footsteps bent,
Towards old (SLIEVENAMANNY'o)?
And with a sigh, bid her goodbye,
My love in Legananny'o.
And coming home sure all alone,
And wrapped in meditation'o.
I thus did say that (FAIR)? makes (CARE)?
Were young mens ruination'o.

My feet being sore, I moaned the more,
Til fit was I to shank it'o.
And Kittie she, would laugh at me,
Snug wrapped up in her blanket'o.
To make me worse, the clouds did burst,
The hail fell helter-skelter'o.
And every thump it made me jump
And get to finf (OLD)? shelter'o.

At last I spied, by the wayside,
A closely spreading thorn'o.
Were down I sat to shun the wet,
Intending to stop 'til morning'o.
Not long I stayed beneath the shade,
Til I fell o'er a dozing'o.
And with the spring, the mews did wing,
And started the composing'o.

My thought (INCLUDES)? mans careers,
Since Adam fell in Eden'o.
And how that Eve could still appear,
So wiley and misleading'o.
Scared at the thought, then up I got,
And homeward bound pursuing'o.
Hard, hard I swore, that never more,
Would I go back a wooing'o.

My hand I stretched, to lift the latch,
With lots of caution taken'o.
For I much did fear, that dad might hear
And from his slumbers waken'o.
But in I got, the door I shut,
The bed was getting ready'o.
When me dad a whack, came off me back
And knocked me through my study'o.

The brackets show the words and place names that I am not sure about. Fingers crossed that someone may have heard this song before. I recorded John and Frances Rogers singing it in my kitchen about eighteen years ago, so the tape has taken some abuse since then. John (Moulden)I will be in touch soon as I have now over one hundred songs compiled about and around Co. Down. Jackie

Here's my guesses

Donegal (although it'd be a fair dander)
Slievenaman (4m West of Newcastle)
or
Slievenamoney Hill (5m N of Castlewellan - has a granite cross on the top)

Slievenaman or Slievenamoney are possibilities as per Alison. Donegall would be a fair stretch of the legs so I would rule that out as well. Is it possible the place is Donaghadee with the pronounciation slurred as in Donaghdee?. The other places may be very small townlands. I have travelled extensively around the Co Down but none ring a bell. I will contact a brother in Newcastle, he may be able to help. The other explanation may be that it is not a Co Down song at all and may well be from another part of Ireland. I suppose there could be a Legananny or two somewhere else. ?.

I've got two of a certainty - from the one inch Ordnance Survey map.

Slieveanisky is Slieveniskey about 4 km east of Legananny Slievenamanny is Slievenamoney about 2 km west and 4 south of Slievniskey. Cherryvaughan may be Clonvaraghan, which is in the same area but not very likely.

I'm going to look at a larger scale map - 25 inches to the mile - this morning.

Thw larger scale map had no more placenames than the one I looked at. Has the place-name survey for the area been published? The names already established are in three separate Parishes - Drumgooland, Aghaderg and Kilmegan - have you checked to see if there were Ordnance Survey Memoirs for those parishes?

John (Moulden) I managed to get in touch with Frances Rogers tonight, she couldn't remember the song but when I read it to her it all came back again. She is going to relearn it and sing it again. I have all the place names and parts of the song I thought I had right, I have had to change. I will fill in the incorrect and missing place names to complete the ballad. A BIG THANKS TO ALL who tried to assist. I have other ballads that are incomplete, (sorry) I may call upon yous-ince again (be warned) thanks again. Jackie

When it's complete please post it here - and don't forget the line-breaks <*br*> (but omit the * which I've put in to stop the html command from working.)

Jackie - you'll have to come up with your pile of paper and we'll do some detective work on the songs.
