BS: Philly Folk Fest

I've gone to this festival every year now for the past 20 years. I've watched it grow {a little too big for it's own good}. I've seen many changes, some beneficial, some not so much but maybe nessesary. It's where I introduced my kids to the folk festival experience. They're all in their twenties now & they still enjoy going to the PFF & other fests. I'm greatfull they go for the music & not just for the party in the campground,as so many seem to. I've made alot of good friends there over the past 20 years & some still continue to go each year. Despite the downside of Philly, it still offers a stellar lineup of performers each year & I'll continue attending. I'd be interested to hear others opinions on PFF,{if your still going ,if not,why }.

Ron.

I'm not going.

I've grown quite disenchanted with PFFS. Their sings are too disorganized most of them degenerate into guitar hog contests.
They never have member concerts. They'll pull in singer/songwriters from out of town, many of whom are mediocre, while they ingore the talent within their own membership.

I go to the Bucks County Folk Song Society Nowadays.

The Philadelphia Folk Festival is being held on the weekend of August 26,27 & 28. Their website is, www.folkfest.org.

Bert, I've heard that the PFSS has had a tendency for getting that way. Although I'm not a member I had some volunteering experience years ago & noticed the politics were running rampant. Not an aspect of the fest I find attractive. Does the BCFSS have a website?

I love the Philly Folk Fest in a theoretical sort of way, and I am happy for its success, but I have never attended it although it is an easy drive from my home.

Too eclectic My musical activity has been focused almost exclusively on Old Time music for decades. The PFF often has OT music, but not enough and rarely my (rather obscure) favorites.

Too big While I am not agoraphobic, the PFF attracts crowds of people big enough to make me nervous. The Brandywine Mountain Music Convention (defunct) and Appalachian String Band Festival at Clifftop WV are "just right."

Too regimented If I want to say "Hi" to an old friend, ask a technical question, or make a comment, I prefer to be able to wander backstage to do so.

Ron, they sure are worth checking out. They are a good crowd, (the Webmaster is a Mudcatter Bert C). Their sessions are usually a song circle for the first half and jamming for the rest of the evening. The circle is quite large so you only get one turn but the talent there is amazing.

Thanks Bert, It doesn't look to be too far away either. I'm in Hunterdon county NJ.I bought my guitar & banjo from Bucks county folk music store {about a 45 min drive}. I remember Ed from Bent Harpoon when we were both members of the Hunterdon folk exchange.
