30 Jul 97 - 07:51 PM (#9890) Subject: Kipper Family From: Moira Cameron, moirakc@internorth.com I've heard some songs played on a Canadian folk music radio program. How can I get hold of their album(s)? Anybody know an address or contact number? Their stuff is really great, especially to a traditional ballad singer like myself. |

31 Jul 97 - 05:46 AM (#9927) Subject: RE: Kipper Family From: Sam Hudson (samh@innotts.co.uk) Hi Moira I can't offer any more on the recordings than Andy's contribution; but you may be interested to know that although the Kipper Family no longer performs, young Sid is still active - or should that be hyperactive? His agency web page http://www.demon.co.uk/wizard/adastra/bandnews.html#Sid Kipper might be worth a peek. Regards Sam

22 Sep 07 - 01:14 AM (#2154755) Subject: RE: Kipper Family From: Joe Offer Sometimes I think there's something wrong with me, but I never seem to catch onto dirty jokes. They used to make fun of me in grammar school for this. Can somebody discreetly tell me what The Unlaid Maid is a parody of? Discreetly, please - send the information in a plain brown envelope... -Joe, blushing- |
22 Sep 07 - 04:24 AM (#2154790) Subject: RE: Kipper Family From: Liz the Squeak It's not really a parody of one song, but all the 'I went walking in May and got pursued by ploughboys, Rogered coming home from the Wake, shagged senseless by Sailors just as the tide was flowing, ravaged by wraggle taggle gypsies-oh and f***d by Friars who should know better' songs. Each verse is based on songs well known in the UK folk tradition - try getting hold of a copy of 'Marrow Bones' - the songs collected by Hammond & Gardiner in the UK, they're mostly in there. Oddly enough, I've spent some time this week learning 'Coming home from the wake' - having Roger the Cabin Boy (name, not instruction) as a friend, I thought it would be funny to stand next to him and sing it. 23 Sep 07 - 03:22 AM (#2155478) Subject: RE: Kipper Family From: Liz the Squeak And wonderful it is too.. I got a copy for my birthday, which lead to me wondering if Marina Russell was a relative (right names, right area, right sort of time as she was born around 1834), which led me to discover the computer will no longer open all my family tree files... so I bought another CDRom programme and have spent several days putting information into that, thus not having time to learn anything new from the book, other than 'Rogered coming home from the wake'. 23 Sep 07 - 03:26 AM (#2155480) Subject: RE: Kipper Family From: Liz the Squeak Sorry, that should be 'Roger, coming home from the wake'. Oh I dunno though.... Still can't see if Marina is a relative, she's elusive. Although she appears on a couple of Census returns, she's proving harder to find in the Parish Registers. LTS |

07 Jan 24 - 06:03 AM (#4195068) Subject: RE: Kipper Family From: Long Firm Freddie Guest John Stafford: I found a reference to a member of the Dragon Folk Club in Worcester having sung Unpleasant and Frightful back in 2015 (they keep a blog detailing what's been sung). The singer was called Colin and there's certainly a Colin currently there - I imagine it's the same one. Maybe he'll be able to recall the lyrics for you: Dragon Blog The reference to U & F is just past half way down the page. Good luck in your search! LFF |
07 Jan 24 - 08:46 AM (#4195074) Subject: Unpleasant and Frightful From: Reinhard That's just a short verse sung in 25 seconds: UNPLEASANT AND FRIGHTFUL Sid Kipper Goodbye my dearest Nancy I must heed thee ahoi, Though it pains me to leave you which brings me great joy.
