I'm looking for the lyrics for this song. I think it's a parody, but I'm not certain. some of the lines go "Don't pet the dog don't pet him whatever you do just leave him alone or the next thing you know he'll be asking your ankle to dance"

I'm pretty sure this is the one by Pinkard & Bowden (sp?), who have a string of comic songs that get occasional airplay on country stations. This one may not be a parody of another song (their "Blue Hairs Driving in My Lane" was a great parody of "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"). You might find it on Cowpie, which has Country/Western lyrics. There should be a link to it somewhere here on the Mudcat, but I don't know precisely where off the top of my head.

If I remember right, the chorus starts out "Don't pet the dog, it makes him think of romance..." (maybe then followed by "Just leave him alone" etc. as you wrote above).

I know the lyrics are in a thread somewhere, but I've looked high and low and can't find them. The information I have is that the song was written by John Robert Hadley.

No, This song was written by a Florida folk-style songwriter who died prematurelyin the late 80's or early 90's -- his name is on the tip of my tongue -- I remember his widow was named Mary -- dang.

Don't pet the dog
Don't pet him whatever you do
He ain't been fixed, and he knows some trick
That'll sure make a fool out of you.

Don't pet the dog
He gets it confused with romance
tum tee tum tum, and the next thing you know,
He'll be taking your leg to the dance.

I was wondering where I got the name of the writer. I found out that sometime-Mudcatter Rick Lee recorded the song on There's Talk About A Fence, and the song is attributed to Hadley.

I first heard Pinkard and Bowden do this about 15 years ago. Still one of my favorite silly songs.

Dear MAG,

I can't help with the author of this song, but is the late songwriter you're thinking of Gamble Rogers? What a loss. He told the best story about port-a-johns ever!!!

No it wasn't Gamble; Gamble, a non-swimmer, died trying to save a drowning person. What a loss is an understatement. He had back trouble, which accounted for the way he would swing around on stage. I just loved the way he would sling his guitar from front to back when he went into story mode. I would like to pinch that, but it would mean risking my guitar with a strap, and I have had bad luck with that. I'll go out and see if Friends of Florida Folk has a website. Bet they do.

Speaking of Pinkard and Bowden, does anyone by chance have the words to their parody of "Wolverton Mountain?" I've been looking for it for years.

I just remember the first verse and the first line of the first chorus...

They say "Don't go to Three Mile Island
"If you're looking for a wife,
"'cause a few years back, they had a meltdown,
"and it's created new forms of life."

The bears and the birds are bigger than houses....

Peter.

According to Jean Hewitt of F.O.F.F., it was Jim Ballew.

OK, here's a transcription from Rick Lee's There's Talk About a Fence

DON'T PET THE DOG
(©John Robert Hadley, Sony/ATV Songs)

Your girl asks you home to meet Mama and Daddy,
She says that she thinks that you're nice.
There's trouble ahead, you're gonna wish you were dead,
If you don't take some friendly advice:

Don't pet the dog
Don't pet him, whatever you do
He ain't been fixed, and he knows some tricks
That'll sure make a fool out of you.

So, don't pet the dog
He gets it confused with romance
Just leave him alone, or the next thing you know,
He'll be asking your ankle to dance.

[pause for inspirational instrumental bridge]

You say it's OK, you try and push him away.
What's his name? Does he sit up and beg?
You try acting cool, but you look like a fool
With a dog making love to your leg.

So, don't pet the dog
He'll boo-boo all over your shoe
He ain't been fixed, and he knows some tricks
That'll sure make a fool out of you.

No, don't pet the dog
He gets it confused with romance
Just leave him alone, or the next thing you know,
He'll be asking your ankle to dance.

Don't pet the dog.

Lee says he first heard this song from Pinkard and Bowden.

In another thread, Jeri posted a link to this wav file (click) from the Goose Creek Boys. More information here (click).
I wonder if the other Florida folksinger people are thinking of is Will McLean. Don't know if he sang this song.

From: GUEST,Gene

THREE-MILE ISLAND
Recorded by Pinkard and Bowden
Based on Wolverton Mountain
Writer: Merle Kilgore

They say don't go to Three-Mile Island
If you're lookin' for a wife
'Cause here awhile back, they had a melt down
And it's created new forms of life

The bears and the birds are bigger than houses
And all the fishes are growing hair

If you go up to Three-Mile Island
Take your kids to the baseball park
When they play night games, they turn the lights out
'Cause the home team, glows in the dark

The bears and the birds are bigger than houses
And all the fish are still growin' hair

I'm goin' up to Three-Mile Island
There's a girl that I love so
She gone thru changes, but I still want her
I've grown to like her extra nose

And I don't care about radiation
I'm a-goin' back to Three-Mile Island
I'm a-gonna get the girl I love
I'm not scared of no mutation
I'm gonna take my Geiger Counter
I'm gonna find the one I love
She'll be glow---ing, glow---ing, glow---ing
^^

No, I wasn't thinking of Will McLean either. All Florida Folkies are well-acquainted with Will' memory. He truly was the Father of Florida Folk, and died (may I say, I think truth is important) from the complications of substance abuse. He was much older than Jim Ballew when he died, though the sad losses came not that long apart.

When I moved to Miami in March '87, EVERYBODY andtheir grandmother sang "Don't Pet the Dog," and credited it to Jim Ballew. He died around then, and Will McLean a year or three later. Jim was still a youngish man.

I always thought it was written by Jim Ballew, but I have Jim's vinyl album, and lo & behold, he attributes it to John Hadley. However, around Florida, Jim get the credit for it...

Incidentally Jim was a hemophiliac, and before donor blood was tested as it is now, he got a bad dose and contracted AIDS....he was a friend, and we all miss Jim playing around at the various festivals in Florida...
