Happy Ever Afters???? (Songs)

17 Aug 00 - 07:38 PM (#279853)
Subject: Happy Ever Afters????
From: Quincy

After reading KT's happy ending to "Puff the Magic Dragon" (Songs that work magic with little ones)
I was wondering if any other Mudcatters could come up with songs where a last verse could be written or changed.....from happy to sad, sad to happy or just to make a different ending!!

I know I'm a soppy and sentimental soul but I can't help it!!!

A song that springs to mind is "Nobody's Child"....about the blind orphan who never gets adopted...even in the very last verse he's still left behind!
I would write a verse where he is living happily with a nice family and dog!

Likewise, the Dubliner's "Seven Drunken Nights"....at the end of discovering his wife with various acquired items, instead of what might have led to divorce could be resolved by attending marriage guidance and then going on to celebrate their Golden Wedding!

Any other suggestions???

best wishes, Yvonne

Wow....now there could be some interesting challenges......with some very funny outcomes!

I personally don't think I'd take it on for very many folk songs, though..... Somehow, to do so could seriously diminish the song and its meaning.....especially if the outcome were completely different than originally intended. Many songwriters would not like that their intention and meaning was compromised.

I only did it for Puff because the kids were so into it and so crushed at the end....And because Puff seems to be such an immortal character anyway.....Ya hate to see him moping around for the rest of his life....It seemed to work with that one, but I wonder about others.....

I'll be interested to know what you come up with Yvonne....

Dia duit ar maidin Alison,
The thread where KT's "extra" verse is in "Songs that work magic with little ones" (can't do the clicky things!)

I thought it was a lovely touch and I know that some songs are meant to be sad but it made me feel better!

Anathea: Anathea pulls a Bobbit on the Judge & a Robin Hood on her brother's noose (breaking the rope with a well-shot arrow)

St. James Infirmary Blues: He finds his baby in the St. James Infirmary, but it was one of those cases where the seeming corpse sits up, comically startling the attendant; she then goes on to write a best-seller about her Near-Death Experience.

Hard is the Fortune/Waggoner's Lad: The girl's father and husband go to a men's sensitivity and anger-management group and come to the conclusion that they really have been insensitive to her needs. They set her up as CEO of her own corporation and spend their days baking her gourmet chocolate foods and cleaning her bidet.

Dona, Dona: The calf is freed by radical members of PETA, who set it up as their poster child and burn the farmer at the stake. The calf builds on its star-quality momentum to go on to star in Pepsi commercials.

Well you really have made me laugh!!!
I've been off sick for a week with an injury I got at work and really needed cheering up....have been reading the threads several times daily and decided to be brave and create one.

Thank you!!

Was wondering what would have happened to the two little boys with their two little wooden horses......what if they had been given Firbys instead???

Or perhaps if the wild colonial boy had stayed in Ireland on the farm and not gone to Australia he wouldn't have turned into thief?

What if someone had stolen the yellow ribbons from the old oak tree......would he still be on the bus?

The operator just disconnected the call and Sylvia's mother was cut off before she could say that Sylvia had changed her mind......

I'd also like to think that after 24 years Alice only moved round the corner!!!

Re-working celticblue5 & Patrish's themes:

Dona Dona

The farmer gets a severe talking to, and full of remorse, gives up his carnivorous ways and becomes vegetarian. The farmer discovers the untold joy of vegetable lasagne. The calf lives happily ever after and forms a bovine freedom fighter group and someone writes a tribute song called Cows With Guns.

We went to see the movie Frequency a couple of days ago. In the light of this thread I think you should all go and see it. Main character: a young man living in the house he grew up in, whose mother lives somewhere else and whose firefighter father has died about 20 years ago. The man discovers his father's old CB radio and due to solar flares and the northern lights he is someho able to contact his father on the night before his death in a fire and warns him about it and saves his life. Then the young man's life changes because his father lived, but it twists and turns a lot after that as well. A slow beginning but a fun way to look at alternative life outcomes ("Choose Your Own Adventure" books).

Well Wavestar, here goes with the original Smokie version minus the Chubby Brown extra bits!,

Sally called when she got the word, she said "I suppose you've heard.......about Alice"
Well I rushed to the window, and I looked outside, and I could hardly believe my eyes,
As a big limousine rolled up into Alice's drive.

Chorus
O I don't know why she's leaving or where she's gonna go,
I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't wanna know,
Cos for twenty-four years I've been living next door to Alice,
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance,
To tell her how I'm feeling, maybe get a second glance,
Now I've gotta get used to not living next door to Alice.

We grew up together, two kids in the park, carved our initials deep in the bark......me and Alice,
Now she walks through the door with her head held high, just for a moment, I caught her eye,
As the big limousine pulled slowly out of Alice's drive.

Chorus

And Sally called back and asked how I felt, she said, "I know how to help.....get over Alice,"
She said "now Alice is gone but I'm still here, and you know I've been waiting for twenty-four years"......and the big limousine disappeared.

Chorus
No I'll never get used to not living next door to Alice.
best wishes, Yvonne

thought of more while I waited for my bus..

One day a mother went to a prison and found her son was totally rehabiliated. He had found religion, signed up for his G.E.D> course and was planning to enroll in the local community college when he was parolled in 3 months.

I once loved a lass and I loved her so well and be still my beating heart she loves me as much. We are to be wed and the men of yon forest are giving me a decorous bachelor's party whilst her fine maidens have a bridal shower for her.

Oh all the money I ever had I invested wisely and prudently and I have provided for my old age and set up a charitable trust and with the remainder I bought the brewery so drink up me lads.

I bet on old Stewball and what do you know? I won!!!

Oh the praties they grow large and magnificent here and we eat them as a side dish.

his head was held in sorrow green scales they fell like rain
puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane
with out his life long friend puff could not be brave
so puff the mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave.

still a great song but its quite sad when the wee boy stops coming around to play

In Make and Break Harbor the fish have come back and then some. A combination of natural cycles, good decisions by Canada Fisheries although it was hard in the short run, and the good will of foreign trawelers, who when it was explained to them that they were causing problems for our inshore fishermen and women, just moved farther outshore, and stick more strictly to limits mutually set. Also Dalhousie got interested in the situation and set up a major aquaculture center here and now we have numerous fish farms without the problems of fish farms in the past, due to better water flow etc. So young people have jobs here; the ones who moved to Toronto we think will be moving back with good pensions in a few years. It's good to see the old houses being fixed up and the old boats as well. mg
