Walnut Valley/Winfield-Anybody Going?

From: Sorcha

Dates are Sept 14-17 in Winfield, Kansas, USA. We will be there Thursday afternoon, but not camping. (Staying with family in Winfield) Anybody else going? I don't have a M'Cat tee shirt, but I do have a Sorcha button. Should I wear it? Where/when shall we meet? I don't like the public BB, as it is so crowded I can't find anything on it. We'll be there until Sunday noon.

Oh yeah, I'm going! (Every year since '76) I'll be there with my wife, her mother, and a few colleagues (one from Pennsylvania, one from Nebraska, I'm from Kansas City, Missouri).

Not camping! Sacrilege! (BG)

I'm giving thought to having a campfire jam/song circle, perhaps Friday night. Love to have Mudcatters join. I'll post some info on how to find and identify our camp, once I figure out what kind of flag or totem we'll be putting up. I'll look forward to meeting some of you in the flesh.

Oh yeah--we plan to get there on the 7th, to enjoy a week of that wonderful pre-festival camping, visiting, and campground music. Some of us earlybirds could probably find each other a little easier (less crowded then), maybe get in some more playing time together.

Every year we, the Oklahoma City Traditional Music Association Click here
have a number of campers and day visitors. I don't yet know if I can make it this year. If I do, I'll surely look up and sing a song with fellow mudcatters.

I know not camping is Sacrilege, but we're lucky to get the 4 days for the festival, no way could we leave in time for the land rush. Would mean too much time out of school for Kate.

You betcha! We're packing the camper even as we speak, and can hardly wait.

We plan to be there for Land Rush also--Bill, Gary, how do we find you?

We try to get as near the middle of the Pecan Grove oval as possible, on the south side next to the road. There should be quite a bunch of us, as usual--we're in the little Jayco pop-up, teal and white. I'll try to get a banner of some sort up so the M'catters can find us--looking forward to finally meeting some of you!

Was on the bill there at least a dozen years. It was a grand experience ALL of those times. Alas, wish I could still do it.

Be sure to give my love to all in Winfield.

Art, I always, always enjoyed your performances. I always felt you were uncomparable in your knowledge of folk music and the many stories that went with each song. Your performances and presence at Winfield through the years was indeed a treat and you are sorely missed. Thanks for all the wonderful music and the inspiration for the rest of us to keep the legends and songs alive in our kids. People like you, Stuart Mossman, and Bryan Bowers have helped carry the message at Winfield. Willis Pracht

Art, I didn't discover Winfield until too late to hear you there in person, but I was introduced to your music by a Winfield fan who had--many, many thanks for all the good songs--wish it were still possible to say "See you there"; I'd love to hear you do Master of the Sheepfold in person.

Although with 24 days in August of 100-plus degrees, and no relief in sight, I'm not sure camping out this year is going to be all that much fun, even at Winfield! Think rain, everybody...

We're still planning to be there on Tuesday (Sept. 5), at least to set up and see if we can stand the heat!

So glad all of you Mudcat people are going to be there this year. I am hoping someone will come up with a time, or place to meet. Since this is my first year, and i won't know where i'm going, a time and place would be great. Something friday evening? All i know for sure is that i will attending the old-time banjo workshop. Other than that, who knows? Hope to see ya there, Benny

We'll be setting up camp tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday Sept. 5) in the Pecan Grove, next to the southside access road. There will be a bright raspberry-colored (some say "pink") Chevy S-10 pickup close to a white and teal Jayco pop-up tent trailer. (Not to mention the ugly gray Astro van that actually pulls the thing...)

Other distinguishing characteristics: A "double" washtub bass out front (very high-tech!); a green banner proclaiming "The Jig Is Up"(or "The Jug Is Up", as the mood strikes); and several old farts sitting around. Hubby and I are the ones attempting to play mandolin and lap dulcimer...

Other Mudcatters, can you post directions to your campsites?

Mudcatters welcome to ours anytime--looking forward to seeing you there!

Lin & John

We will be arriving Winfield about 3 AM on Thursday. Will go to the MawInLaw's place and get some sleep, and show up at the fairgrounds about noon, I hope. Maybe those of us that are there can meet at the Official WVA booth (inside, south end) about 5PM on Thursday? I will wear my Mudcat Button, and I carry an oblong fiddle case. Check out my pics on the Resource page.............only 9 more days........

The scamp camp will be behind Stage 3 somewhere. Drop in anytime. Our Scamp trailer looks like a laundry hamper on wheels. Deanna is going up today to get ready for the land rush, I'll join her Friday. It's really hard to do work stuff when I'm (in my mind) already in Winfield. Bill

I'll host a jam/song circle at our campsite, Friday Sep. 15th, 8:00 P.M. 'til we stop. Details on how to find us will be forthcoming--we're still sorting out our campsite decorations and such (i.e., big things to look for). All Mudcatters and friends are welcome, please plan to come and join us.

We have always wanted to go, & started to plan for it this year, then other priorities came up at the last minute (family matters, etc). We still -sorta- have the time off from thursday am, to drive from central Missouri. We've never been there, & budget is a wee bit tight now due unexpected deficits (long sad tale). We (meaning me) also never had time to re-assemble the 4WD's engine & we have to go to a big conference Saturday thru Wednsday in St Louis. We do have a very old rusty crusty pick-up w/an old tatterred but almost rain-proof cap.. could sleep in the back. But haven't taken it on a long trip, nor slept in the back under the cap, in 10 or 12 years. Doubt if I could still find he platform I used to put in for sleeping above & storage below..

Does any experienced Windfield person think we could just use a tent small enough to carry in a compact sedan? rented, or buy a cheap one from WallieWorld or other cheapie place?? Would it be feasable to stay at a motel, given how late it is? (I doubt it). If you can camp, how expensive is it? Are there decent showers available? campgroung grills or just campfires, portable cook stoves, etc?

Any info, pointers, etc would be appreciated.

Thanx, BK

It's still doable, BK. There are more tents than RV's at Winfield (in fact, if you're looking to buy a tent, there's probably no better place to see every conceivable make and model on display, and talk to the owners!). If you have access to a camping store that rents good tents, that may be more satisfying than buying a cheap one, as the rental unit will likely be a sturdy, proven model. Many of the less expensive tents on the market either leak in the rain or blow over in the wind (or both!), and Winfield usually provides both conditions. Even so, lots of folks camp at Winfield in budget tents and have no problems, or have such a good time that the problems are insignificant.

A smaller tent has the advantages of compactness when folded up, relative ease of pitching, and better quality than a larger tent at the same price level. If you're not hung up on standing erect inside the tent, or storing all your belongings in it, a small tent can work out just fine.

There won't be any motel rooms available in or very near Winfield, but there should be plenty to be had in Wichita, and perhaps some other towns similar distance away. I encourage camping on the grounds to get the full Winfield festival experience, which includes some campground music around the clock. It's also a great convenience to have a place on site to retreat to for a drink, nap, etc.

Camping without electric hook-up is $7 a day (covers one vehicle and one tent). Showers are available, on-site in a semi-type truck trailer outfit (hot water, open top, sometimes long lines) or in town at a school gym or some such, shuttles provided. Port-a-pots are reasonably well distributed throughout camp, flush toilets in the main grandstand building in the stage show area. Water available in camp, though maybe a long walk. Cooking strictly what you bring. It's possible to get all your meals from the vendors there, saves some time and trouble but of course costs more than cooking yourself. Firewood available for sale.

The heart of town, with restaurants, stores, etc., is within walking distance, and shuttles are provided. My thought is go for it, it will work out. Hope to see you there!

P.S.--Where in MO? I'm in Kansas City.

We should arrive Thursday afternoon, and will try to meet Sorcha and others at the WVA booth, which I take to mean the "info" booth under the center of the grandstand seats.

We have usually tried to get a Pecan Grove spot not too far from the 1/2 block long road that joins the P Grove oval to the road into the stage/concession area. This year we'll also be looking for electric hook-up, and a fairly big spot, so we'll see what's available when we get there.

We plan to have a fair size picking parlor, metal frame with silver tarp. We have two inflatable guitars about 2 feet long, one blue, one magenta, to hang from the picking parlor or a tree or something. We have some of that obnoxious "banners on a string" like you see at used car lots. We have little strings of lights--cars, M&M's, and Donald Duck (my hero). We may have a foot-high Donald, an inflatable hammer, and a Mardi Gras mask hanging around. If you see some or all of the above, you probably found us.

I'll look forward to meeting fellow Mudcatters, and don't forget our Friday (the 15th) night jam.

This is to let you know where Gary T is camping. If you go to the wv-fest.org site and follow links to maps and then festival site map, Gary is camped right across 14th Street from the number 27 on the map. If you walk south from stage 1 and stay on the pavement it will take you right to Gary's camp.

He's got a sign saying "Welcome Mudcats." He's planning to hold a jam at his site Friday at 8 PM. Come. Bring friends and songs to share.

There's a big canopy and at night, it's easy to see the lights which outline it from the main stage.

I'm back in town after spending the weekend before the festival at Winfield. My first time to be there so early. Wonderful music everywhere, but no crowds yet. I can't believe how many people come that early. Can't wait to get back on Thursday.
