We could make some mailing list or so to keep up to date for folk gigs, concerts, festivals, tour dates and something, cos it´s usually a bit hard to get to know such things in Italy. My Dad learned more when he was in Italy during WWII than he ever did at home. Grandpa was determined to be "American" and he rarely used the language. My Grandmother, who was German, never spoke German either. Grandpa would listen to some baseball in Italian and made a weekly trek to the I-A Club, but that was about it. We lived in a small town that had a large Italian community and lots of my Dad's generation spoke with like they lived in Chicago or New York. Everytime I watch "Analyze This" I crack up.........DeNiro sounds just like all those guys who would hang downtown and Dad and I would stop and talk with. My Dad NEVER sounded that way, until he was in a group. When I was a little kid, I thought "fockin' Dago" was a term of friendship since that's how these guys would refer to each other. My Dad was always trying to "shush" them down a bit especially when I'd arrive home and use some of those wonderful words I had just heard around the house. Spaw |

Is it possible that you are the lone native Italian Mudcatter presently living in Italy? Always remember that unlike my husband, not every 'Catter is on the 'Cat every day. Refresh this thread from time to time so that a variety of people can see it. Lena, what was the name of your Italian folk thread? I only get on here two or three times a week usually and I missed it. Years ago, a Mudcatter asked for the words to "C'e' 'na luna 'mmiez' 'a mare." (I'm not too sure how the Neapolitan is spelled.) I sent him the words and a translation, and we had some very nice conversations after that. But Italian threads are not too common. I only know a few genuine folk songs, most are Neapolitan parlor songs such as 'O Sole Mio. Rita Ferrara |

There is one of the greatest italian songs ever(for me..)called Tammurriata Nera. Tammurriata is the name of a very sensual dance at least 2500 years old.'Tammurriata Nera' came out after the WW2,when poor black american soldiers were sent to Naples.a bit for love,a bit for the sake of getting a bit of chocholate and bread to feed the family,girls in Naples had many affairs with those soldiers.You can imagine the faces of old peasants in naples when they saw black children being born!!!They couldn't explain why Morocco babies were coming out from white women.Of course you can imagine why.This song talks about it.It is hilarious,powerful,captivating,and sad.Especially when it says"E Churcillo vecchio pazzo c'ha venduto o' materazze",meaning " Old fool Churchill sold Usa the materasses for this..."(you can understand the bitterness when you think that when the Army liberated Italy,they had fun bombing and killing poor italians in the hills for fun.Many of my friends' relatives had brothers and sisters killed like that...it was a hard time).But there is no racism and it is also full of life ,wisdom and irony, when for example quotes conversations in the streets among people.I wanted to translate it on the Mudcat,but the heavy sexual slang is so tipically dialectal and I can't find a substitute in english.I'd need your help,maybe. Callie,i wanted to sing Tammurriata nera on friday nights but it requires a well trained voice.I think you'd do so good,I'lhave to give you the lyrics... |

The tape is very rithmic because music from that particular area is veeeeery wilde.There are many trad music pieces just made by percussions,sounding melodic as well.I think it's an influence from Africa...Am I wrong or someone else from the friday night thing is on the 'cat?! We'll talk about it next time we see each other.I think my friends are going to play it tomorrow night.The singer does it in a wonderful,passionate,funny way.
