Derek Warfield's 'Sons of Erin'

Derek Warfield, the wit and the sage of the "Wolfe Tones" has just released his contribution to the musical history of the American Civil War - "Sons of Erin: Irish Songs, Ballads and Music of the American Civil War" and a companion book titled "Irish Songster of the American Civil War." The book contains the lyrics of 46 songs with extensive historical commentary on each one. If you have an interest in Irish or Irish American history, or in the Civil War, which saw Irishmen fighting valiantly on both sides, I think you'll count this work among your treasures. I've written to Derek and suggested that he make the work (nine years in the making) available through the Mudcat as a way to support two great musical institutions, himself and the 'cat.

Mea culpa, and all that. In my enthusiasm I think I may have overstated the "newness" of Derek's "Sons of Erin". It carries a y2k copyright, but has been available at least since April. Regardless, it's still a great piece of work for anyone interested in history in music, or the inverse.

Good man, Paddy.

I hope you don't me putting the link to an advertisement for the book in here. But if Derek is agreeable to your suggestion, I would hope that 'Catters would by the book here, at the Mudcat.
Seems a fitting place.

B.

I was lucky enough to be playing at the same re-enactment as Derek and the boys in June,(the Grand Review, Harrisburg, Pa.) A mediocre event turned into a great weekend for our band, Hardtack and Harmony, as we all played together on the Friday night. Derek is a real gentleman and we had some great conversation about Westmeath, the Irish in the Civil War and re-enacting etc. Playing music with a legend was something I will always treasure. A great CD, to be sure and a great little book too.
