Lute Question

Why did the old lutes have their tuning heads bent back at an angle? Why did they stop building them like that?

Oh well, while I'm at it ...

In the old tyme baseball photos, you see a path from the plate to the mound. What was that for, and why did they stop using them?

I didn't look through the whole article, but you may find your answer here. Alternatively, check this reference out. The answer isn't too far away, I'm sure.
As for the baseball question - haven't a clue, but I wouldn't mind knowing myself.

I want to know the answer to the lute question, too, so I'll go check those sites, Brendy, thanks.

(dumb maybe answer to the BB question--maybe the pitcher and the catcher had to confer verbally more often before the advent of hand signals for pitches, and so wore a path between the mound and the plate? We need Rick F. here)
