From: sledge The recent Cropredy festival in the UK was used as an oppurtunity to highlight the release of a recording of Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy made in 1966 while touring called BOTH THE EARS AND THE TAIL. I have no idea if this material has been released before in any format but it is worth every penny and I have been playing it to death. The cd exudes a lot of charm and intimacy, the music in general is beautifully played, but I love the bits that show this is a live recording in a small club, for instance, Swarbs whilst in the middle of playing a medly is heard to ask "whats next" or Martin forgetting the title of one of the tunes. If the music that these guys make cranks your handle then it really is a must get. |

I have managed to get quite a few CD's which were on my list this summer, so I'll have to wait a bit, but I will put this one at the top of my new list. Thanks, again, kat |

From: okthen i heard them at chelmsford folk club about '66 and was fairly near the front, they were playing a complicated reel, when swarbrick casually says to carthy "what time's the last train home?" carthy then answers him and several lines of conversation then ensued, all the time playing the tune faultlessly. does anyone know the nature of swarb's illness/reason for him being in a wheelchair? cheers bill |
