Help: Deleting Old Personal Messages

Subject: Help: Deleting Old Personal Messages
From: Mbo

My PM box is pretty stacked, 609 active messages at present, so I figgered it's tim to do some house cleaning. None of the messages on the page have been Archived, but I'd like to archive all the 'keeper' messages. I see a "delete" function in the Archive, but none in the main PM page. Does this mean I have to archive all 608 messages and THEN delete the ones I don't need anymore?

Mbo, I was just going to post something about this!

I believe Max made deleting a two step process because he was helping people to not accidentally delete messages. You do have to archive them first.

It would be very helpful if we could also delete straight from our personal pages. I wonder how much server space is taken up by message people just haven't gotten around to deleting a bunch yet. It seems to take forever the way the process is set up now, and I, for one, put it off until I have a lot of spare time.

Thanks, Jeri. Oy, archiving all 608!

I had mentioned this to Pene about a month or so ago and he was going to check into it. It would really help a lot if we could delete right after reading.

Pene or Max? Any hope of it, yet?

Thanks,

kat

Gawd, and I think my mailbox is full when I have 10 or 12. I have found, though, that you don't have to click on the 'Archive' clicky, then wait, click, then wait, etc. Just click on as many as possible before the page clears and the action will be carried out on all of them. Same for deletes.

So how do you archive messages ? I've been considering printing out a paper copy of the traced threads I think keepable, and then deleting.

Thanks for that tip, Ivan, it made quick work! 608 messages archived in 25 minutes! Now the task of figuring out what to delete. It's spooky..I can read the last 7 months in thos old PMs. Some of it bringing up old feelings that are painful...but I think I'll keep them anyway.

Les B., when you go to read a message on your personal page, at the top of the message, I believe to the far right, is the option to click on for "archive". Just click and there it goes, to your achived messages page.

The process for archiving personal messages is just to click on the "archive" link, which is on the bottom of the screen on each message, and also next to the name of the message on your personal page. You can click "archive" on three to five messarge if you have a quick clickerfinger. To delete, you have to go to your archive and click the "delete" links, same way.
If you want to save a personal message onto your own compter, you can highlight can copy the message and paste it into a word processing document. You can also save messages individually as you view them - just choose "save as" on the "file" menu of your browser.

I would like to see a one-step message deletion process, maybe with the delete link away from other links, so you don't delete by accident. I'd also like to see separate personal pages for tracer threads, personal messages, and bookmarks. I save a lot of stuff, and it sometimes takes a long time to load my personal page.
I'll send Pene a personal message and make sure he watches this thread.

Joe, 3 to 5 messages if you're fast? I got at least 30 at a time! My Mom always said I hade amazing mouse skills (!).

Actually, I think the two-step process would be quite workable if there was a way to highlight all the messages we wanted to archive (or delete) then perform the action on all of them at once. The two-step process is a good safeguard, but just too tedious when ya have to do it piecemeal.

Ivan, I'd say that's the best idea yet. It will be a fun challenge to come up with a way to do it, but it's sure an interesting idea.
Mbo, you may click 30 links, but how many of those deletions actually "take" if you're doing it that fast.

I'll tell you this Joe, in 2 operations, I removed 92 messages.

I would not use the instant delete feature even if it existed. I don't have that many Personal Messages but when I do, they typically involve 4 or 5 messages and I like to keep a record of what I have said until I am sure that the conversation is over and I prefer to archive them at that point rather than keep them showing active when I have responed to them.

Now if I could just discipline myself to clear out what I no longer need...
