28 Aug 00 - 10:19 PM (#286935) Subject: Folk's Great Lovers From: Pinetop Slim Nutha thread has thoughts lingering about Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger (not Ewan and Peggy, mind you, nor MacColl and Seeger. That they forged such strong separate identities makes their love so much more interesting). And a lost disc (long story) led me to thinking bout Lotte Lenya and Kurt Weill. (Did I say Folk's Great Lovers? I meant Music-of-the-people's Great Lovers). Who do the best romance stories surround? Whose loves have given us the best songs? Ian and Sylvia? Richard and Mimi Farina? Mick Jagger and Maryann Faithful (but it was a great one-night stand)? |

Now I know that Sandy and Caroline certainly meet that as anyone who has been around this joint well knows. However, because someone is still together doesn't make it love. I know plenty of couples that fit there. Can we get a little info on these as you list them? Mimi and Richard Farina is a pretty well known story as are some others, but some of the lesser known stories might be interesting. Just kinda' curious. Spaw |
28 Aug 00 - 11:29 PM (#286979) Subject: RE: BS: Folk's Great Lovers From: Sandy Paton George and Gerry Armstrong were a devoted couple who made major contributions to the folk world. Sally Rogers and Howie Bursen were visiting with us here yesterday. They are surely a great and loving couple. As for me and Caroline, we're beginning to get the hang of it after 43 years. But, then again, our was a whirlwind courtship; the kind that are never expected to last. Sandy |

29 Aug 00 - 02:39 PM (#287281) Subject: RE: BS: Folk's Great Lovers From: Jim the Bart Alan Frazier and Daisy DeBolt, at least at one time. I saw them while in college in 1969 (yes, I am old) and I have rarely seen two people communicate so intimately through their music. And the communication included an additional instrumentalist, Ian Gunther on the fiddle. Man, they were intense. I honestly forgot about myself as I watched them sing and play their incredible songs for five nights in a row. Their sets had a pulse like breathing, or waves on the shore. . . I know I've mentioned them before, but it was something I will never get over. And although I understand that they are no longer together as a couple or an act, what they had then was something I have hoped for ever since - a partnership based in music that makes everything else seem small and insignificant. |
