Emmylou Harris Alert!

Subject: Emmylou Harris Alert!
From: Peter T.

Public Service Announcement:

This week's New Yorker has a brief piece on the forthcoming Coen Brother's film, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and the documentary of the music from the film performed at a concert in the Ryman in Nashville. A picture accompanies this article. Included in this picture are (1) Gillian Welch; (2) John Hartford; (3) The Peasall Sisters; (4) Ralph Stanley; and

(5) Emmylou. This is the great picture of Emmylou you have all been waiting for, guys (well, the fully clothed picture, anyway). Trust me. New Yorker, issue of Sept 4, pages 68-69.

Is this what it has come to then, Peter? This idle idolatry of an unreachable nightingale?**BG**

I liked her better when her hair was long! Just enjoyed a really good Austin City Limits last Saturday night on PBS. She hosted a song circle with Buddy(?) Martin, Dave Mathews and a couple of others whose names I can't remember.

I saw that one awhile back kat......really wonderful and a very different Dave Mathews.

Ah. but sweet Emmy.........She brought something different to Country and added so much. In many ways a true folksinger as she is well versed and an excellent performer of the mountain songs as well as early country. Not everyone likes that voice, but for me, there is none like it and her many associations over the years have given her a versatility almost unmatched. I never tire of hearing or seeing her.

Gotta' go get a copy of the New Yorker..........Cletus can use the rest of it for whatever..........gawd, I don't even want to think about him reading it.

Be still, my heart! That woman could cause me to get downright stupid. To have a woman who can sing so pretty and be so pretty, well, it's more than a man can handle.
I checked the New Yorker website, and they don't give any excerpts or pictures from current or past issues. Say, Peter, are you willing to scan me a pinup picture copy of the article?

What Joe says is true, it's true. Dear Emmylou just has that effect on us. Even a hard-bitten, miles-on-the-road type like Steve Earle gets all mushy and chivalric when Emmylou comes up. I've been hopelessly, head-over-heels in love with the girl ever since the first time I listened to her vocals on Gram Parsons' "Grievous Angel" in 1985. It's a one-sided affair, it's true, but I think my wife suspects. :-)

So, uhm, did somebody say they were gonna scan the New Yorker photo?????

Soddy, I'm pretty sure the album title was also Roses in the Snow. It's the first traditional/old-time country/bluegrass sort of album I ever really liked. It led me down the path to the wayward state I'm in today, musically speaking. *BG*

Emmylou!!! Oh,yeah.

First time I saw her was inthe early 70's on a country music award show. They were showcasing supposed up and coming talent. Don't remember any of the rest, but they had 120 pounds of Emmylou stuffed into a 90 pound pair of jeans. Just knew she would go far.

So her live twice after that. Great shows.

My husband brought umpteen gazillion Emmylou recordings AND Bonnie Raitt recordings to our marriage. I have got to see both of them live (not at the same time, though!), and I sold home accessories to Emmylou's mother when I worked at a furniture store several years ago. (Emmy came in with her!)

So I told Mister, if my hair goes gray, it's just goin gray, like Emmylou. Well, he said that's okay by him.

TarHeel....that was exactly the right flavor. She IS all those things. Wonderful woman.

I too got hooked on Roses in the Snow which was a fantastic album. I like the way she goes back and explores the roots of several genres.

And for my money, "Prayer in Open D" is one of the best songs ever written. Not too many songs that put the blame on our lives in the right place...ourselves.

While I was doing an audition at a club in Georgetown many years ago, Emmylou was rehearsing in another room. If you think she's gorgeous now, you should have seen her then, my boys. If she'd played her cards right she could have had me.

I went to the library today and looked for the New Yorker. The September 4 issue hasn't reached California yet. Still, the previous issue had two great stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer. If you haven't read singer, you're missing something.
Hmmm. I wonder if Emmylou likes Jewish authors...

(Worth another trip, Joe, believe me).
As with virtually everything else, I am in total agreement with Cp. "The shadows filling up this land, are the ones I built with my own hand". Perfect line. As I have been working on open D, I went straight for this one. (can't do the 13th fret stuff alas). This song has the same quality as "Boulder to Birmingham" (a truly great song) -- she has the very rare ability to take old religious phrases and make them new, salting them with striking fresh images ("and the rock of ages I have known, is a weariness down in the bone"; "the last time I felt like this, I was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire, and I stood on the mountain in the night and I watched it burn). It is impressive because it is so hard to do without it going really bad. Dylan (to connect threads) did it; Leonard Cohen overdid it, but made it work occasionally. This is a very elite league. It requires absolutely impeccable taste (in the artistic sense). I wonder where she got that style from -- not from Parsons, as far as I can tell.

If she was some big-bazoomed bimbo, I wouldn't think it was cute, I'd think it was icky. But then you all are far too classy to get all mushy over some big-bazoomed bimbo, aren't ya? Aren't ya? WEll, yes, except for Catspaw, of course ...

Hi guys......This came up one time before when we were discussing Gibsons or something and Rick brought up Glen Reid then. She is of course mentioned on his website as is Rick, but I have rarely seen Emmylou anywhere without a J Gibson as her guitars. Last time I saw her live, she swapped guitars several times and all four used were Gibson J's. I'm sure Rick will have info and although I'm sure she probably loves Glen Reid Instruments, she also has a LONG association with Gibson as you can see from the NAMM 2000 Show(scroll to the bottom for the "Gibson Girl").

A couple of years ago in my office we got into a version of this same discussion and one of the other employees said something about a woman we all knew who was of the Pamela Anderson variety. And all the guys starting saying, "Whoo-hoo" and "Oh,yeah ... " You know, the usual articulate response. And I said, "Guys. Those are plastic bags. That's just little silicon or saline-filled baggies."

They all fell silent for a minute or two, then Tom shrugged and said, in a sentence that sums up an area of significant difference between (some) men and (many) women: "I don't care. They're still hooters."

Now back to Emmylou: What do you guys think about her hair, now that she's surrendered to the gray? Does that affect your affection?

Truth told.......I just love her voice. And I love what she brings to a song. I think she probably has some amount of personal vanity (image consultant, etc.) and there's nothing wrong in that as I believe it tied in with the insecurity of wondering whether her songs are good enough, done well enough, and things like that. I also find her to be caring and compassionate and someone who has an honest concern for her own actions as well as the admirable trait of believing that "the shadows filling up this land are the ones I built with my own hand."

She's aging well both emotionally and physically. Do I like the way she looks? Yeah.......But I think the package is what I see most and why I so loved that line, "an Heirloom Rose among the Daisies." The people I have as close friends meet that desciption pretty well too.

Always nice to talk about fine ladies. I confess that I really love her style, and not her looks (not my type). She just carries herself well, and is as complex as a Siamese cat. I suppose I have to confess that her voice is, for me, on the edge. It has this tendency to grate -- she seems to sing through her teeth (open your mouth Emmy!) -- but when it works it is fabulous, with those gear shifts, and that great taste.

The question that is a poser for me -- being a guy -- is the picture they printed in the New York Times Magazine -- the Internet version is far smaller and much less dramatic. If you see the real one, it is a full page, very unflattering picture - a "pores, scars, and all" shot, colour, and you can see the makeup. I can see the aesthetic point -- here I am, "pores and all". I was struck by it. But I wonder if many middle aged woman would like it, and she is one. I showed it to a serious, very liberated, woman of my acquaintance who is her age, and she was really unhappy with it. Very ambivalent -- a sort of, yes I know we should be changing our response to pictures of middle-aged women, but still, what a terrible picture.
I only raise the point because in the article Emmylou says that she will shop two hours for a lipstick. So she must have some vanity (pride?). I wonder what her reaction to the picture would be. It was deliberately done: so she must have had some veto power of some sort. Obviously a touchy subject for a male to bring up (we are supposedly blessed with the counter-aesthetic, the weather beaten manly look), but the picture did make me wonder.

yours, Peter T.

You're so erudite and thoughtful PT.............

I just thought she was aging and still doing the best with what she has. There's always been a bit of the "beat/hippie/earth mother" look about her and age is showing the character that is, as you so well point out, prized in men......at least generally. I like that look in women too.....just a personal opinion.

Thinking of that always makes me think of Clark Gable. In his day he was considered to be a handsome man. For me, he never looked better than he did in "The Misfits" which was done just before he died. I hope that isn't a sign you're about to croak!

Of course exactly the same thing could be said about Marilyn Monroe in the same picture. She looked like a battered angel. I don't know about Gable -- he was so good looking in Gone With The Wind, it would be hard to top. Even a hardboiled hetero like me can see that! But maybe you are right -- but he certainly looked dreadful in all those 50's pictures before The Misfits. Maybe he had two peaks. Given that the rest of us have foothills if we are lucky, it seems somehow unfair.

Remember when the good ole US of A made the greatest cars in the world? Why they don't no more? Where did all the great "marks" go? Chrysler is Govt. supported, they dont have to. Ford attempts to make a good product and is willing to finance it. GM is a finance Co. that makes a product. To say this another way, suppose you have the good fortune of a friend writing a great song for you to perform. You make the mistake of singing it at some venue where you have no idea recording is taking place. Suddenly "your" song is on the charts like lightning. You say "Hey, that's my song"! reply?... emmylou has class, which is a lost art. she is not constricted in one genre -- traddie, singer/songwriter, or interpreter. she has immense sexual appeal but doesn't use it as smoke and mirrors. she's one of the very few Famous People these days with that kind of cred.

i've been in love with her (also) since i first heard her in 1975. i was on my way to work and i pulled over and stopped the car, just to listen... in tears. The song was Til I Gain Control Again with/by Rodney Crowell.

The earliest recording i have of her other than the original release of Gliding Bird is called All the King's Horses with the John Guernsey Group, a 45 on the Sweet Breeze label. Emmy is under a made-up name "Hannah Brown" on the record as apparently she had just signed with WB.

peace,
another long-time die-hard Emmylou fan

While I would be lying to say I never thought of her as attractive, I can only listen to her voice for a very, very brief amount of time. I don't know what it is - perhaps something about the way she attacks her notes. Whatever it is, it provokes a profound distaste.

You have to note Allen you are in a minority, it seems to me that nearly every major recording artist has sung with Emmylou at some point, she must be doing something right. Personally I think her harmonies are beautiful and she seems to be able to perform in many different genres of music.

I can listen to her sing all day and then again tomorrow. Great artistry; I am transported by her singing. Oh how I wish I had a voice like hers, and her ability to use it...sigh...

I'd have to agree with Allan.

I feel sorry for all you guys who are in love with Emmlou. You see, I KNOW she is deeply in love with me! She's just too shy and retiring to come out and admit it.

I know a girl who used to be room-mates with Emmylou. I kep trying to get Liz to organise the same priveleges for me but again this shyness keeps creeping in.

I will advise you if this situation changes - not to gloat you understand - just to point out the futility of your desires.

Ah heck, if you want to dream, who am I to mock you?

Eddie

I was so grateful to Emmylou, Mary Black and the whole Transatlantic session crowd for agreeing to donate the use of their recording of "The Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia" for the Singing Through the Hard Times Utah Phillips Tribute we put together. It is a remarkable track, and added much to the album.

Just saw this thread and the answer I supposedly posted in response. Well, that's my website www.abarbeau.com and I am alive and kicking (and working non-stop I'm happy to say) but it's not me who sent that answer. Hopefully, I would have had a bit more sense of humour about the whole thing.

But thanks for the mention - dead or alive!

Ms. Barbeau
Rick was one of the guiding lights of the Mudcat.
Sadly, he shuffled off the mortal coil several years back. Though he was wrong about your demise, he would have been the first to congratulate you for still being around a decade after his mistake.
I'm glad to hear that the checks are still coming in.

When working in DC in the early 1970's I used to go to club called The Assembly. Saw Roberta Flack there, I think. I used to go see a very young and fresh Emmy Lou there. If I remember right she played with just 2 other musicians (bass and another guitar I think). Went one night and found she was sick. A really young-looking blond kid named Lawrence Hammond accompanied by a really good piano player filled in. He had some pretty good western songs but I can't remember exactly what he sang. What became of him? I got the impression he was not from around DC.

One of my favourite tracks of all time has to be ELH, Dolores Keane and Mary Black singing an almost acapella version of Cyril Tawney's "Grey Funnel Line". I say almost acapella because it has the most tasteful, laid back, non-intrusive backing of concertina and mandolin I have ever heard. As a team effort they bring out the nostalgia and longing of the song in a way not even the great Cyril could.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I play it.
