01 Sep 00 - 09:57 AM (#289205) Subject: Names of Animal Groups From: Davey I recently came across some colorful, and sometimes aptly descriptive names that we give to groups of animals, and decided to incorporate them into a song. I hope some of you Mudcatters can help me by adding to my list. Here is what I have found so far. A charm of finches Gaggle of geese Murder of crows Unkindness of ravens Parliament of owls Nest of robins Descent of woodpeckers Puddle of ducks Sloth of bears Skulk of foxes Husk of hares Bale of turtles Shoal of bass Hover of trout Looking forward to many more.... 01 Sep 00 - 10:02 AM (#289207) Subject: RE: Help: Names of Animal Groups From: Mrrzy Murmuration of starlings Exaltation of larks Crash of rhinoceros And the group of ravens in my source, EO Wilson's Sociobiology, wasn't called an unkindness, I don't think, but I don't recall, right now, what it was. I'll look it up... Note that to have a brace of pheasants, both pheasants must be dead. What about a passel of kiddies? Or are we limiting to non-human animals? |

01 Sep 00 - 10:31 AM (#289228) Subject: RE: Help: Names of Animal Groups From: Mrrzy Are we having thread creep? I thought the question was for ACTUAL terms (albeit archaic). If we want to invent some, great, and I'd suggest a purr of mudcatters. |
01 Sep 00 - 11:26 AM (#289251) Subject: RE: Help: Names of Animal Groups From: Jacob B We've got actors at Mudcat. The term for a group of actors is a cry of players. The term can also be used, most appropriately, for a group of singer-songwriters who sing about their distressing emotional problems. |

01 Sep 00 - 12:29 PM (#289317) Subject: RE: Help: Names of Animal Groups From: rabbitrunning You might check your local library for a book called "An Exaltation of Larks" by James Lipton. There was a 1968 edition, and I believe a revision or update in the early 1990's. Probably the most complete book I've seen on the topic. |
01 Sep 00 - 01:04 PM (#289340) Subject: RE: Help: Names of Animal Groups From: Davey Wonderful list, and thanks to MMario for the link to the Animal Collective site. Looks like I'll have plenty of material for the song I'm working on. I expected some made-up names from such a wonderfully wacky group of people, and I've come up with a couple as well. A tardiness of turtles An odor of skunks A strum of guitars A spew of spaws A wallow of mudcats And the list goes on, and on, and on..*BG* Davey... (:>) |
01 Sep 00 - 01:07 PM (#289343) Subject: RE: Help: Names of Animal Groups From: MMario check around, you will also find there are lists of incredible names for various offspring/young of animals, likewise the process of carving at table had (during the medieval days) a different name for different beasts |
