I just talked to the weatherman, it's gonna rain on me today.
I dropped my bubble gum in the sand and I had to throw it away.
I got out bed, scratched my watch, and wound my head. I'm so mixed up I just can't think.
I'm gonna put a bar in the back of my car and drive myself to drink.

More?

I have been looking for the words to this song for years. The chords are basically the same as Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie. I have written several verses myself but would love to find out who wrote it and more verses.

Hate to bring bad news, but

'I'm Gonna Put a Bar in the Back of my Car and Drive Myself to Drink
From the album "Fear of Frying" by a Marin County (California) band called "Eggs Over Easy", around 1968 (courtesy of Mark)
Unfortunately, according to Eric, "After years of searching, I have finally obtained a copy of the album "Fear of Frying" by the Marin County band "Eggs Over Easy". And, I must report, there is no song titled "I'm gonna put a bar in the back of my car and drive myself to drink" Nothing even remotely similar. Nor does this line, or anything similar to this line, appear in any song on the album. Still, it's a great title.'

It may be a title without a song.

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON
(Sydney Forest?)

The room is empty
The lights are dim
And my heart wonders
If I'll ever see you again

My tears are hungry
For an open door
When your arms held me
I never felt that way before

I'll be waiting
I'll be watching
Under a blue moon
The taste of heaven
Only happens
Once in a blue moon

Once in a blue moon

Do you remember
When the wind blew free
And we fit together
So naturally

I'll be waiting
I'll be watching
Under a blue moon
The taste of heaven
Only happens
Once in a blue moon

Once in a blue moon

Allmusic.com says PUT A BAR IN MY CAR is on 3 albums:

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Ricochet," 1967; and "Pure Dirt," 1968; and Mac Davis, "Soft Talk," 1984.

The BMI Repertoire lists the songwriters as M Davis and D Smith.

According to Allmusic.com Eggs Over Easy's album "Good 'n' Cheap," originally issued in 1972, was reissued as a CD, with bonus tracks, in 2006 by Hux Records. BAR IN MY CAR is on this reissue. (I can't tell whether it is one of the bonus tracks that was not on the original.) Allmusic says that BAR IN MY CAR was written by Austin DeLone & Brian Hopkins, members of the band.

There is a sample, but I can't transcribe it right now.

Evidently it is not the same song as PUT A BAR IN MY CAR, recorded by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band—although I'd bet both songs were based on the same joke.

One person got it right - the thing is, the meter requires this:

Gonna put a bar

in the back of my car

and drive myself to drink,

by Brien Hopkins (my brother) and Austin De Lone

found on the latest version of Good n Cheap, not found on Fear of Frying

My dad wrote the song and recorded it in the 1950's. I didn't even know it have been 'lifted' until today.

PUT A BAR IN MY CAR
As recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on "Ricochet" (1967)

I just talked to the weatherman.
It's gonna rain on me today.
I dropped my bubble gum in the sand
And I had to throw it away.
I got out o' bed,
Scratched my watch and wound my head.
I'm so mixed up that I can't think.
I'm gonna put a bar
In the back o' my car
And drive myself to drink.

There's a little black cloud rainin' down on my head,*
Washin' all my dreams away.
Every stop light I see turns red.
I guess it just ain't my day.
I might as well give up.
My mind's an empty cup.
I'm a ship gettin' ready to sink.
I'm gonna put a bar
In the back o' my car
And drive myself to drink.

[* Reminds me of the Al Capp character, Joe Btfsplk.]
