04 Sep 00 - 12:59 PM (#290808) Subject: One octave songs wanted From: Homeless I just got a new toy to play with - a double chambered ocarina. Both sides play a C major scale and are limited to one octave. So now I need to find some songs that will fit within one octave on a major scale. Does anyone have any suggestions of songs, other than Christmas carols or children's songs? And if you know of a written source for the song that would include chords, that would be greatly appreciated also. |

Where on earth did you find a double ocarina? I would love to have one! One octave tunes ... there are tunes that go from sol to sol and they won't work out for you. The seventh will be flat (okay for some Irish though). You need tunes that go from do to do. First one that comes to mind is the Marines' Hymn (the Halls of Montezuma). == Johnny |

Ocarina Workshop do a series of books and there is also one called 'Tunes for One Octave Instruments' or something similar. If you are UK based give Music Room at Cleckheaton a ring as it was on their list (01274 879768). All the best Steve |

04 Sep 00 - 09:34 PM (#291100) Subject: RE: Tune Req: One octave songs wanted From: Homeless Roger - sorry, I meant "things that are playable, with or without words." Most of the music that I play I don't know the words to. And since the ocarina is a wind instrument, I wouldn't be able to sing anyway. Banjo Johnnie - I got it at a Renaissance Faire recently. Here is a clicky for the company. The one that I got is a C/C and sounds really good. Nice mellow tone. Both of the low Cs are a little flat, but I think that's just because I've got too tight of a grip and am pressing my fingers down into the holes too much. Other than that it is really in tune. I need songs that go from do to do. The makers included a fingering chart showing how to get accidentals by half covering some holes, but until I'm a little more accomplished I'd like to stick with straight fingering. If you know of one octave songs in other scales tho, by all means send them. I'll get around to looking at them eventually, or if I can't find any one octave majors, I'll look into them now. TIB - Hadn't even thought of those. And I know I've got the music for them around somewhere. Thanx for refreshing my memory. I've thought about trying to do Row, Row, Row your Boat in rounds - starting one side a phrase later than the other - but I think that is beyond me yet. Steve - Thanx for the info, but I'm in the US. You've given me a place to start looking tho. I've tried doing a search on 'ocarina' on the internet and came up with many thousands of hits. Unfortunately, they were all for some video game. I'll check into the pipes angle. |

04 Sep 00 - 10:53 PM (#291137) Subject: RE: Tune Req: One octave songs wanted From: GUEST, Banjo Johnny Hi Homeless! Thank you for the clicky. Funny, the "blue clicky things" are always red on my screen. This caused some confusion when I first logged on Mudcats. Anyway ... YOU PROB'LY ALREADY KNOW THIS, but just for the record: A lot of songs are one octave do-to-do, with maybe just a couple of notes out of range. For example, the first note of You Are My Sunshine is SOL below the octave. You can fake it by using SOL within the octave, and the rest of the tune goes okay. A lot of pickups are like that. == Johnny |

05 Sep 00 - 12:52 AM (#291196) Subject: RE: Tune Req: One octave songs wanted From: GUEST,leeneia About those C's that are flat--it makes a difference what you are doing with your throat and mouth when you play a wind instrument. Think of the instrument as an extension or amplifier for the song which you are making in your throat. Don't just leave it up to the ocarina and your fingers to make the notes come out. It's hard to put into words, but if you listen carefully and try to modify the tone until it sounds right, it may happen. (Of course, an ocarina is pretty simple and may not be "improvable", but try it.) Your public library probably has collections of well-known songs, I believe in the 780's. Look there for songs you like. |

05 Sep 00 - 05:31 AM (#291241) Subject: RE: Tune Req: One octave songs wanted From: oggie When playing your ocarina's lowest note, if you tilt the body towards you (while blowing of course!) the pitch will drop a semi-tone. Takes a bit of practice but is really useful! All the best Steve |
