05 Sep 00 - 08:36 PM (#291740) Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: BanjoRay There's an excellent session every sunday night from about 8:30 at the Golden Ball, a pub on a street parallel with and to the right of Micklegate (looking in to the town centre) whose name I can't remember. There's usually about 7 or 8 musicians (fiddles, squeezebox, bass, guitar, sometimes a banjo (often played by me)). The music is often American Old Time, maybe some old english fiddle tunes, various other stuff depending on who's in - not usually Irish because this gets hammered to death in other places. There's another more folky session at a pub called the Maltings on, I think, a tuesday but I've never been, although I believe its good. The beer is excellent in both places. Cheers Ray |

Also regular visits from various part. And it's not an hour from York, it's only 50 minutes - I know, I take my son to York University quite often! |

If the stuff he plays on his box is anything to go by, it should be a good night. When I went past it yesterday, I noticed it has a sign outside which declares it something like the national real ale pub of the year! If you need directions, it's close by Lendal Bridge, and near the junction with Rougier Street, set down a small road parallel with Lendal. Easily seen - you can't miss it. It runs from 2pm till 6pm on the first Sunday of every month, hosted by my good self, and anybody is welcome. We have a good mix of singers and musicians, of varying abilities, and always have a great afternoon. It's always great to see new faces. And its only 35 minutes from York Uni...! Pete |
