06 Sep 00 - 02:54 PM (#292271) Subject: Not to be missed From: bob schwarer Wausau, FL - Possum Capital of the U.S. In Chipley FL, which is the self-proclaimed Possum Capital of the U.S. there is an engraved bronze plaque commemorating the possum. It seems that during the depression when there was little to eat the abundance of possum in the vicinity allowed people to survive. This plaque tells the story. My buddy who lives near there swears that whenever a possum is struck by a car anywhere in the US, the animal turns its body so that it head is pointing toward Chipley before it expires. [Henry Horrocks, 01/01/1997] [RA: There is a granite monument to the Possum about five miles south of Chipley. According to the monument inscription, it was erected by the "Wausau Community Development Club" in 1982.The Florida State Legislature has proclaimed that the first day in August is "Possum Day."] From somewhere on the Internet. 06 Sep 00 - 03:29 PM (#292304) Subject: RE: BS: Not to be missed From: Wesley S Bob - Where is Chipley ?? I grew up on the west coast in Largo. The best road kill we had on the coast was alligator. You take the tail and split it lenghwise and fill it with onions and garlic and you've got some mighty fine eatin'. There's hardly enough meat on a possum to feed a family of four. With a good size gator tail you can invite over all your cousins. These possum eaters sound like panhandle people. |
06 Sep 00 - 03:30 PM (#292307) Subject: RE: BS: Not to be missed From: GUEST,Cleigh O'Possum All possums know of the bravery and the sacrifice of our brethren in Chipley. We are also grateful to the people there and the Florida legislature for remembering those who gave their lives so others might live. The monument in Chipley satands as mute testimony to the courage of those heroic possums of so many years ago. While we may not have raised the flag on Suribachi, we did make stew in Chipley and no marine is as proud of the Iwo Jima Statue as we are of the statue to Chipley's Chops. Many thanks Mr. Bob sir, for sharing this heroic tale with my friends at Mudcat. |

06 Sep 00 - 06:52 PM (#292441) Subject: RE: BS: Not to be missed From: GUEST,Cleigh O'Possum Yes Ms. Sinsull, I am indeed. I'm a threww hole ocarina type of possum. I was born about a year and a half ago. You see, one day Catspaw was poking fun at Mr. Fielding for having a rosewood kazoo and he said that he was personally holding out for an ocarina in the shape of an animal. And then, because he could think of nothing more ridiculous, Catspaw said he had always wanted to blow up a possum's ass. Please excuse my language, but that's what he said. Its in the threads. Anyway, my "birthmom"--Barbara Blessings told Catspaw she thought she could make one and here I am! While I was being finished Catspaw became quite ill and spent a month in the hospital where he almost died. But he says that he couldn't do that before I arrived and luckily by the time I arrived, he had just gotten out of the hospital and was going to be OK. I have lots of pictures of me with other Mudcatters and also a lot from travelling with Catspaw and Karen to various places and even one of me signing into a motel and hot tubbing with Catspaw. One day Ms. Sinsull, maybe I'll get to meet you and you can have a little poof up my bum. I'd certainly be honored. BTW, as a Mudcat Icon, it was only right that I should be named by a Muddie and my name was a joint effort on the part of Mr. Seed and Mr. El Swanno. When Mr. El Swanno was here in Ohio, he let me sit on the hood and the wheel of the bright red new ambulance he was taking back to California. It was very exciting. Cleigh O'Possum |

07 Sep 00 - 05:22 PM (#293063) Subject: RE: BS: Not to be missed From: paddymac Native folk in the southeastern US considered 'possum, gator, frog and 'coon as "famine food." If times were bad and there was nothing else to eat, well, you gotta do what you gotta do. These days, gator and frogs are nearly "gourmet" fare, but 'possum and 'coon continue as "hard times" fare. I've had all of them, and whole-heartedly concur in keeping 'possum and 'coon in the "hard times" cupboard. I recently ran across a report of pioneer folk in the 1780-1790s actually rendering possums for their oil. Most native peoples I've asked about it take the "famine food" view, but one reported that it was sometimes used for "regularity", sort an animal kingdom version of castor oil. Personally, I'd have to be pretty damned stopped up before I'd even consider slurping down a spoon or two of either. |

The whalers would also at times collect up penguins for their oil. Gawd help me, but one of the funniest pictures I ever saw was a monstrous vat of boiling penguins and all I could think of was a new version of "Boil that Cabbage Down." It was tragic really, but a couple hundred penguins bobbing and boiling............ Spaw |

He started by saying that "Folks in Tennesee is different than folks here in Pennsylvania" He went on to talk about his friend collecting fiddle tunes in the boonies in TN and one of the locals showing him a big cast iron pot. He took the lid off and a live possum poked his head out. The host pointed and said "Deenneeeeeer" (David went on to explain that this meant that this was what they were going to eat) Slán agat, Rich |
